Quantum Control of Neutral Atoms and Single Photons

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics

Abstract

Coupling and coherent control of single photons and atoms are the key to quantum information physics, with atoms and photons acting as information carriers in scalable quantum networks. To reach this degree of control, we follow several routes. We will manipulate individual atoms in free space using an array of optical tweezers, and couple these atoms to nano-structured cavities, like photonic crystals. Furthermore, we will explore single-photon quantum memories, using either electromagnetically induced transparency to store a photon in an atomic ensemble, or a single atom coupled to an optical cavity to realise an atom-photon quantum interface.

Title teleportation, transformation and railways
Description This project, based at Carol Sorhaindo Arts Studio in Chapeltown, Leeds, draws together key historical moments in the construction and culture of Leeds Central Railway Station, narratives from the African Caribbean community in nearby Chapeltown, and the experience of physicists researching quantum teleportation at Oxford University. Under the mentorship of quantum physicist Dr Axel Kuhn and heritage historian and theatre professional Joe Williams, along with the contribution of movement aesthetic specialist David Hamilton, researcher/artist Dr Carol Marie Webster uses dance, theatre, and visual arts to construct performances and facilitate public dialogue around the complexities of human migration and quantum teleportation. The project has its own website at http://transportation-transformation.co.uk/.
Type Of Art Performance (Music, Dance, Drama, etc)
Year Produced 2013
Impact The two live performances/public engagements allowed for artists, scientist, audience and community member to actively participate in the construction of a temporary community with shared experiences from varying perspective and to dialogue with and among the other across borders (imagined or otherwise). In addition, there were three smaller engagement between and researchers (scientists and artists) and small groups of community members (Chapeltown, Leeds, University of Oxford, and University of Leeds) in which knowledge sharing was explicit and conscious and levels of discomfort and courage were also more explicitly apparent.
