Bi(Me'Me'')O3 - BiFeO3 / PbTiO3 Pseudoternary Compounds for High Temperature Piezoelectric Applications

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Materials Science and Engineering

Abstract

Funds are requested to support a post graduate student, Dennis Shay to carry out his Ph.D. based at Engineering Materials at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with the Materials Research Institute at Pennsylvania State University. The project concerns the fabrication and characterisation of novel high Tc perovskite structured piezoelectrics intended to replace Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 in high strain and temperature actuator and bi-morph applications. The compositions are based on the pseudoternary solid solution, BiMg1/2Ti1/2O3 / BiFeO3 / PbTiO3.

Description A new high Tc piezoelectric was developed which operates at ~100 oC higher than market leader PZT
Exploitation Route Has likely applications for high temperature sensors in non destructive testing of reaction vessels and cooling systems. We are currently trying to involve UK based and owned companies to exploit the superior performance of the new piezoelectric
Sectors Aerospace, Defence and Marine,Electronics

Description The work has been presented as part of several invited talks at major international conferences, e.g. CICMT in Florida April 2013. The work has continued with a grant to undertake further development to form multilayer actuators using the new high Tc piezoelectric ceramic invented during the project. This work was highly successful and we are trying to interest companies in commercialisation. A better piezoelectric materials has been invented than currently available on the market. The material has similar performance to the market leader but works at high temperature. The material has been fabricated into prototype devices. Beneficiaries: To date, no company has pursued commercialisation but comparison tests with other potential high TC systems are underway at teh Universityof Leeds. Contribution Method: A new piezoelectric was invented and then fabricated into a prototype device. We are hopeful that this will be commercialised in the near future.
