A Radiation-Hydrodynamic ALE Code for Laser Fusion Energy

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description An approach for including the MHD equations into an ALE code based on the Cauchy solution was shown to work for the standard MHD shock tests. This paved the way for the more advanced version of the ALE code (Odin) currently (2017) under development from another EPSRC funded software project.
Exploitation Route The key results have been prepared as an introductory manual for the Odin code and this has been used as the basis for ongoing Odin development by the UK laser-plasma community.

Title Odin
Description Odin is a 2D r-z geometry multi-material MHD ALE code. This is maintained on a private gitlab server along with detailed documentation.
Type Of Technology Software
Year Produced 2017
Impact This is the first full release of the Odin code but is currently restricted to the development team only. This includes researchers at Exeter, Warwick, Imperial College and York. This release is the first full Odin release which is able to complete simulations of pellet implosion for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). It includes MHD, conduction and a generalised Ohm's law. The ability to begin ICF simulations, albeit with an early release version of the Odin code, is essential for keeping the UK academic community actively involved in international ICF programmes.

Title Report on basic ALE scheme for MHD in Odin code
Description The final version of the Odin code developed from this grant, and the report documenting the source code, were the starting point for flow on funding. The software is a 2D r-z ALE code for multi-material MHD. Due to involvement of AWE and possible proliferation issues this software is currently treated as though it were export restricted.
Type Of Technology Software
Year Produced 2013
Impact This project laid the foundation for the new CCP-Flagship project EP/M011534/1. The code improvements under this project have lead to collaborative links with AWE plc and First Light Fusion. The MHD coupling and more advanced integration of PIC codes will be of interest to AWE while First Light fusion have supplied experimental data for validating the Odin code.
