Topological Protection and Non-Equilibrium States in Strongly Correlated Electron Systems

Lead Research Organisation: University of St Andrews
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

A paper mbius strip is like a cylinder in which the paper twists as it goes round. It looks looks quite like the simple cylinder, but it cannot be transformed into one without some drastic action such as cutting it with a pair of scissors. The mathematics describing this fact is known as topology. It allows the classification of shapes and objects into sets whose members are fundamentally similar to each other, and fundamentally different from objects in other sets. This seems abstract, and it is. However, abstract concepts can sometimes point the way to futuristic applications of sciences. One of the ambitious dreams of modern physics and electrical engineering is to build a quantum computer, a machine that would function completely differently to today's computers, and be a step-change in technology. In order to do that, one has to harness a property of quantum mechanics called 'coherence', which allows its laws to be realised. In the everyday world, fully coherent systems are extremely rare, because when they couple with everything around them, that environment acts like a source of strong random noise that scrambles the system up. This 'decoherence' is one of the core problems of the field. Ground-breaking theoretical research over the last decade has shown that there might be special classes of quantum system which are topologically distinct from the vast majority of other systems. This means that they will not couple to the environmental noise that is such a problem, and offer a route to overcoming decoherence. The second key issue for an electronics revolution is understanding what happens when you severely disturb even a normal quantum mechanical system. This is called driving it from equilibrium, and is going to be more and more important as we try to make electronics run faster and over smaller distances. We understand equilibrium quantum physics very well, but as soon as we go far from equilibrium we enter unexplored territory. In this Programme, we will address both these issues. Building on a breakthrough which has shown that topology is much more important in modern materials than we had ever suspected, we will perform a series of interlinked projects aimed at establishing which materials are most likely to offer topological protection from decoherence. Although ambitious, this is not an empty dream. Microsoft, who formally support our work, have created an entire research centre in the USA to work towards it. Their efforts are mainly theoretical, while ours will be mainly concerned with concrete experiments both on naturally occurring materials and on specially engineered hybrids. The second thrust of our Programme, non-equilibrium quantum mechanics, will be mostly theoretical work to begin with. Its primary focus will be gaining insights that will be of relevance to futuristic electronics in general, but we believe there is particular value in coupling that work with the investigation of topological effects. Nothing is proven yet, but there are good grounds to think that non-equilibrium systems may themselves ultimately prove to be the best platform for stablising the topological excitations that so many people are seeking. Our work is highly adventurous, and will push back the frontiers of current knowledge. Doing it as a co-ordinated Programme will bring exactly the cross-fertilisation of ideas and techniques, and of experiment and theory, that maximises the chances of success. The scale of a Programme also enables engaging with top international collaborators. In addition to working with Microsoft's research centre, we will exchange ideas and personnel with groups from Harvard, Berkeley, Cornell and Princeton in the USA, Grenoble in France and Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan. Major challenges require this level of global collaboration, which will expose the young people who we will train to the very best minds.

Planned Impact

The world-wide drive to maintain the pace of the electronics revolution demands ever smaller basic elements, working ever faster. This inevitably means that quantum mechanics will play a role of increasing importance in future technology. We must either work around quantum physics, attempting to suppress the effects of its intrinsic uncertainties and fluctuations, or work with it. In this Programme we aim to work with it, investigating how to realise coherent quantum control using futuristic 'topological' excitations. In parallel and in combination with this, we will tackle the problem of non-equilibrium quantum physics, whose understanding will be of ever-increasing importance as we ask more and more of electronic materials. Our work lies somewhere between fundamental and applied research - it is an example of focusing abstract mathematics and physics with a long-term technological goal. Deep and basic questions still need to be addressed, and the field is still a long way from the market-place, but it attracts significant attention from an industry that knows that a paradigm shift will be needed if progress is to be maintained. Indeed, Microsoft formally support our Programme, and will work with us throughout its duration. To ensure that the benefits of our long-term research are available more broadly to industry, we will establish an Industrial Associate scheme to ensure good communications with other potential users such as Toshiba and Hitachi, who, like Microsoft, are significant inward investors in the UK. This will build on a model that we have piloted successfully in setting up the Scottish Doctoral Training Centre in Condensed Matter Physics. Many of the elite students in that Centre will also work on research projects offered by the Programme. They, as well as the post-doctoral research associates who we employ, will be one of our outputs, namely a supply of people with a breadth of training that is of direct relevance to the development of future technologies. Other ways in which we can benefit the economy are perhaps best classed as 'spin-off' and 'spin-out'. The former will be achieved because the advanced materials in which we will investigate topological effects also have likely uses in other ways. One family, for example, has potential to be used in thermoelectric refrigeration. In terms of direct spin-out, the most likely output is the commercialisation of some of the unique instruments that we build in order to make the highly sensitive measurements that are necessary for our research. We will also make use of the opportunities afforded by work like this for advocacy and outreach. The story of the field is a compelling one: mathematics developed in the era of Kelvin for a 'failed' atomic theory found relevance in the twenty-first century in a futuristic model for quantum computation that is now being pursued by scientists across three continents and four core fields: mathematics, physics, computer science and electrical engineering. Base material of that quality provides an excellent platform from which to inspire a range of audiences from the young to the old. We will establish, and resource, a formal outreach and advocacy programme to ensure that society profits fully from it. A final form of impact concerns contributions to the international reputation of UK science. Our team are all international leaders in their fields, and direct collaboration between our Programme and institutions such as Berkeley, Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, Tokyo and Kyoto ensures that as well as our young team members receiving training to the highest international standards, ours will be work of international prominence. This will be of particular importance as the UK faces a difficult period in which international perception of its achievements assumes greater than normal significance.

Description By research funded from this grant, a number of novel approaches have been developed which have resulted in publications but not necessarily had societal impact yet. Highlights from the ongoing work include:
• Development of novel theoretical tools to describe entanglement in quantum devices as well as in topological materials
• Use of these ideas to assess the performance of the adiabatic quantum computer, one of the field's most discussed devices pioneered and sold by D-wave Systems Inc.
• Co-ordinated experiment/theory collaboration revealing entirely new insights on the superconducting order parameter of the candidate topological superconductor Sr2RuO4.
• Development of new instrumentation, notably Kerr microscopy and an apparatus which enables probing material properties while inducing previously unattainable levels of tensile and compressive strain.
The last point, development of new instrumentation, has led to a patent application and a spin-off company as detailed in the Narrative Impact.
Exploitation Route The new techniques developed under the present research programme, TOPNES, will be employed by a number of groups in academia. This concerns, e.g., the novel strain device, which has been developed in TOPNES and the design of which has been described in detail and commercialized by a spin-out company, so that other research groups within and outwith TOPNES can now implement this technique. The pioneering work has already led to a large number of follow-up adaptations, to make in-situ strain tuning compatible with other techniques as well as to apply it to other scientific questions. The same applies for the innovative approach to the preparation of magnetic tips for measuring magnetic structure at the atomic level.
The better understanding which we have achieved for materials of relevance to topological quantum computation will enable us and other groups to better judge in which directions to go and which are the most promising materials.
Finally, research done under TOPNES with ESPRC funding has resulted in two patent applications and a spin-off company, which will now further develop instrumentation to an actual marketable product.

Description TOPNES research aims to lay the foundations for novel quantum technologies, unlikely to result in short term applications - therefore the key performance indicator should be the number of publications and the citations they attract, hence the impact on the scientific community. However we are constantly looking for ways to exploit the developed techniques and methodologies. The development of new techniques and methods has led to a patent application as well as founding of a spin-off company to market piezo-electric devices for cryogenic environments. The business model of the spin-off company, Razorbill Instruments (http://razorbillinstruments.com/), has been awarded prizes in the 2014 Converge Challenge and the 2016 Mercia Fund Management's Q1 Business Plan Competition. It has sold specialized scientific instrumentation to researchers around the world. The second patent application which has emerged from TOPNES on error correction for quantum logic has already been cited in two patent applications from a US defense and aerospace technology company, highlighting its impact on current R&D activities. Exchange with our industry partners makes sure that relevant industry is aware of the results of the research programme. This is done though the industrial associates programme. The industrial associates are invited to participate in TOPNES events, to provide the PDRAs and PhD students a route to connect to them, as well as update the industrial associates on progress of the research programme. In a meeting recently organized by us, with contributions from TOPNES, potential applications of quantum materials for novel quantum technologies were discussed and a number of our industrial associates took part. The basic concepts of topology are well accessible for the general public, making this an ideal theme for outreach activities. Our commitment to connect to the general public is evidenced by more than 30 public lectures given by TOPNES investigators. To increase the critical mass of participants in outreach activities, we are pushing for joint outreach activities with the Condensed Matter Doctoral Training Centre based at St Andrews, with Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh, to include PhD students who are working on topics relevant to TOPNES. Research results are disseminated through a web page. TOPNES have recently published a series of outreach videos, which combined have already attracted already more than 2000 views. TOPNES public engagement and advocacy activities have been covered by national television and by BBC.

Title Kerr Microscope
Description We are developing a low-temperature magneto-Kerr microscope. The magneto-Kerr effect is the rotation of the polarisation of light on reflection. This rotation is a very sensitive probe of time reversal symmetry breaking in zero field. In finite field it provides a microscopic probe of the Hall-conductance a property intimately connected with the Berry phase and topology. At the simplest level measuring the magnetic flux through a vortex can determine if a vortex is indeed a half-quantum vortex.

Title Data set for 'Control of superconductivity with a single ferromagnetic layer in niobium/erbium bilayers'
Description Superconducting spintronics in hybrid superconductor{ferromagnet (S{F) heterostructures provides an exciting potential new class of device. The prototypical super-spintronic device is the superconducting spin-valve, where the critical temperature, Tc, of the S-layer can be controlled by the relative orientation of two (or more) F-layers. Here, we show that such control is also possible in a simple S/F bilayer. Using Field history to set the remanent magnetic state of a thin Er layer, we demonstrate for a Nb/Er bilayer a high level of control of both Tc and the shape of the resistive transition, R(T), to zero resistance. We are able to model the origin of the remanent magnetization, treating it as an increase in the effective exchange Field of the ferromagnet and link this, using conventional S{F theory, to the suppression of Tc. We observe stepped features in the R(T) which we argue is due to a fundamental interaction of superconductivity with inhomogeneous ferromagnetism, a phenomena currently lacking theoretical description.

PI Contribution My theory group is collaborating with the experiment group of Prof. Lev in developing an understanding of multimode cavity QED with ultracold atoms. Prof. Lev's experiment is an unique world-leading experiment, and is among a very small number of experiments that have lead to the creation of this entirely new field of research. My theoretical contribution has supported interpretation of their first experiments, as well as developing the theory of experiments they plan to perform in the future. I am also helping to supervise work by graduate students in their group. We have developed the first practical proposal for how to simulate the Meissner effect using synthetic gauge fields.

Results and Impact 3 events were undertaken in total as part of the Fife Science Festival 2016. On Friday 6th May Jean-Philippe Reid and Liam Collins-McIntyre ran a schools day for primary aged children. This involved the facilitation of a 30-minute demonstration for approximately 5 groups of 15 children each. The demonstration was of a superconducting train with a levitating superconductor. Also shown were some basic properties of liquid nitrogen, involving shrinking balloons and freezing, then smashing flowers. The event allowed children to get hands on with certain areas such as smashing a banana to pieces. Feedback was excellent with many students remarking it was their favourite part of the day.

The same demonstration was also performed as part of the festivals "Family Fun Days" on Sat 7th May (Kyle Ballantine and Liam Collins-McIntyre) and on Sat 14th May (Haibiao Zhou and Liam Collins-McIntyre). These events were held in Cowdenbeath and Glenrothes respectively. On each day there was approximate attendance of 300 to 400 people with a full range of ages present. Feedback was again excellent and public engagement was very high. Many of those who came to the demonstration asked detailed questions about superconductors, their possible uses, and what we at the university were doing to support this.
In 2017, a number of Postdocs and PhD students took part in two family fun days on 27th May (Cowdenbeath) and 3rd June (Glenrothes). These events were open to the general public and were attended by over 900 people. The TOPNES team demonstrated a magnetic chessboard and showed the Youtube video clips produced for the programme, as well as the 'superconducting train' and properties of liquid nitrogen.
