CRITICAL MASS: Collective radiation-beam-plasma interactions at high intensities

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This proposal describes a programme of research on single-particle and collective radiation-beam-plasma interactions at high field intensities, production of high-brightness particle beams with femtosecond to attosecond duration, new sources of coherent and incoherent radiation that are both compact and inexpensive, new methods of accelerating particles which could make them widely available and, by extending their parameter range, stimulate new application areas. An important adjunct to the proposal will be a programme to apply the sources to demonstrate their usefulness and also provide a way to involve industry and other end-users. The project builds on previous experiments and theoretical investigations of the Advanced Laser Plasma High-energy Accelerators towards X-rays (ALPHA-X) project, which has demonstrated controlled acceleration in a laser-plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA), initial applications of beams from the LWFA and demonstrations of gamma ray production due to resonant betatron motion in the LWFA. The programme will have broad relevance, through developing an understanding of the highly nonlinear and collective physics of radiation-matter interactions, to fields ranging from astrophysics, fusion and nuclear physics, to the interaction of radiation with biological matter. It will also touch on several basic problems in physics, such as radiation reaction in plasma media and the development of coherence in nonlinear coupled systems.

Planned Impact

Impact and relevance will take place at several levels and on different timescales.

The impact of the research will be wide ranging, from pure academic research to advancing the field and exploring new regimes arising from moving into new parameter domains. In addition to new opportunities in basic research, there are numerous new applications, some of which could have a very high impact e.g. radiotherapy, nuclear fusion, imaging of dense matter, medical radio-isotope production. Basic research will feed into applications and deliver benefits to industry and ultimately the UK economy. Indirectly, trained scientists may find their way into industry. By setting a high standard for the research, and publishing in high impact journals, the group will become more competitive in a rapidly growing area of research, which has many potential applications. Multi-disciplinary approach will develop a flexibility to tackle challenging problems and be attractive to international projects, thus allowing the team to engage with and lead international projects. The most important dissemination paths enhancing the profile of the research in the academic community will be through publishing the outcomes of the research in high impact journals and presenting the work at national and international conferences.

The output of the research will have longer term but significant impact. As one of the objectives is on applications of the technology, in particular in the health sector, we expect the project to have more immediate impact in radiotherapy and imaging, which has a high impact on society and quality of life.

There is a demand for improving cancer therapy in the UK. Particle therapy is currently seen as a possible route to improving treatment of certain types of cancer, particularly in young children. Compact accelerators and radiation sources could have impact on diagnosis of illnesses, e.g. by enabling on-site production of PET radioisotopes and other tracers. Recent reports have identified an impending acute shortage of medical radioisotopes because of the imminent decommissioning of reactors. Compact radiation sources could have an impact on detection of explosives and therefore on global insecurity. Imaging of stored nuclear waste could also have an impact on the lagacy of nuclear power generation.

Academia and industry are likely to gain from the development of more compact coherent radiation sources. Furthermore, ultrashort gamma ray pulses should allow real time investigation of materials subject to stimuli. A compact coherent X-ray source based on laser plasma wakefield accelerators would have a major impact on the pharmaceuticals industry and health care because reduced cost would make them more widely available.

Employers will benefit from skilled workforce trained in a multidisciplinary environment. The immediate beneficiaries will be academic institutes, industry, NHS and government laboratories, but it is anticipated that the broad skills gained could be transferred to a diverse range of career pathways.

Description Developed a compact, ultra-bright, attosecond duration coherent XUV radiation source, based on the laser-plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA). Developed a kiloAmpere femtosecond-duration, high-current relativistic electron beam source from a LWFA. Demonstrated the LWFA as a high resolution source for phase-contrast medical X-ray imaging. Developed plasma density tapering in LWFA accelerators as a means to boost output properties such as higher electron energy or shorter bunch duration. Investigated high energy electron beam radiotherapy and carried out dosimetry and radiobiology studies to measure cell survival of cancer cells up to 10 Gray doses. Developed a bright femtosecond gamma-ray source based on the laser wakefield accelerator. Developed a high charge, 30 nanoCoulomb, 2 MeV electron beam source based on laser-plasma interactions in under-dense plasma. Measured and fully characterised all the relevant beam properties of high energy electron beams from a LWFA. Developed the basic theory of the ion channel laser for use with the LWFA. Undertook measurements of XUV undulator measurements to demonstrate a compact synchrotron source based on the LWFA. Measured eight orders of magnitude gain in a 2 mm long plasma Raman amplifier. Developed a new Kinetic theory of radiation reaction. Developed a fundamentally new formulation of radiation reaction of electrons in ultra-intense laser fields based on higher order Maxwell electrodynamics. Developed a new simulation tool for Laser-Plasma interactions using spatially compact finite energy laser pulses. Investigated the implications of Stern-Gerlach-type forces in laser wakefield accelerators. Demonstrated radio-isotope production using a LWFA using a compact LWFA-based gamma ray source, which could be suitable for producing radio-isotopes for nuclear medicine and imaging applications.
Exploitation Route Development of ultra-compact coherent radiation X-ray sources. Development of a compact very high energy electron therapy source for cancer treatment. Development of a compact gamma ray source for probing dense matter, for security and energy applications. A compact high energy electron source and radiation sources based on them would find very wide use by a diverse community of scientists, clinicians and industrialists. Radio-isotopes produced using a laser-based accelerator could find use in imaging and cancer therapy.

Title Generation of intense coherent THz, XUV and X-ray radiation
Description We are developing coherent radiation sources based on laser-plasma interactions and are investigating several novel methods. One method uses the plasma bubble as an X-ray radiation sources, while the other uses a pre-formed plasma ion channel as a wiggler. We are also investigating using the high charge electron bunches that are emitted from the plasma bubble as a means of producing very high energy (relativity) THz pulses. We are also exploring using plasma dipoles excited using counter-propagating pulses in plasma as an efficient source of THz radiation. The Z-ray/XUV pulses have durations of attoseconds to femtoseconds. The THz pulses are either single to a few cycle duration. The radiation pulses are intrinsically synchronised with the driving laser pulses.

Title Near-threshold electron injection in the laser-plasma wakefield accelerator leading to femtosecond bunches
Description "Theoretical model describing self-injection of electron in laser-plasma wakefield accelerator near the threshold regime. This process is crucial in determining the electron bunch properties. In this paper we show that injection occurs due to the localised charge density build-up in the sheath crossing region at the rear of the bubble, which has the effect of increasing the accelerating potential to above a critical value. Injected electron bunch duration is determined by the dwell time above this critical value, which explains why single or multiple ultra-short electron bunches are formed in the first bubble. We have performed a series of 3-D particle-in-cell simulations (OSIRIS) to compared our model as well as experimental measurements on the ALPHA-X beam line."

Title Raman backscattering saturation due to coupling between ?p and 2?p modes in plasma
Description Raman backscattering (RBS) in plasma is the basis of plasma-based amplifiers and is important in laser-driven fusion experiments. Using theoretical model and particle-in-cell simulations, we show that saturation can arise from nonlinearities due to coupling between the fundamental and harmonic plasma wave modes for sufficiently intense pump and seed pulses. We present a time-dependent analysis that shows that plasma wave phase shifts reach a maximum close to wavebreaking. The study contributes to a new understanding of RBS saturation for counter-propagating laser pulses.
