Abstract

This application seeks an EPSRC Capital Grant of £1,079,600 towards the shortfall of £2,372,600 required to install a world leading aberration-corrected & monochromated dedicated scanning transmission electron microscope (SuperSTEM3) at the EPSRC National Facility for Scanning Transmission Electron-Microscopy (STEM) (EPSRC Reference: RE-10-0005-EPSRC-STEM). The EPSRC award will be matched by contributions from elsewhere totalling £1,293,000. As part of the National Facility, SuperSTEM3 will support many users from the UK and elsewhere and have a high utilisation factor.
The National Facility is run by a consortium of five Universities (Leeds, Oxford, Manchester, Glasgow and Liverpool) and is led by Prof Rik Brydson of Leeds. It is based around the SuperSTEM facility at STFC Daresbury Laboratories (www.superstem.org) but also provides access to complementary advanced instrumentation at Consortium University sites and Partner sites (currently Cambridge, Sheffield, Warwick and York). The last EPSRC review panel (2005) rated the SuperSTEM facility 'internationally outstanding'. Highlights of research impact since this review include:
- a total of 104 journal publications with users (9 Nature group/PRL)
- 32 invited talks and 23 conference contributions since 2007
- the first demonstration of atomically resolved EELS mapping
- a significant contribution to 2010 Nobel prize winning work on graphene
The National Facility was awarded £4.5M by EPSRC in the recent round of tenders for mid-range user facilities. The requirements of the tender for this facility were determined by a Statement of Need from the user community and a subsequent Town Meeting. The combination of equipment at SuperSTEM and the Consortium/Partner Universities is able to meet many, but not all, of the tender requirements. The cap £4.5M on the tender budget combined with the requirements on staffing levels meant that the capital budget was insufficient to purchase SuperSTEM3. As a fall-back position, £1,103,000 of the budget was allocated to upgrading SuperSTEM2, the more modern of the current SuperSTEM instruments. As detailed below, this is far from a satisfactory option.
The new instrument, SuperSTEM3, will be housed in a new purpose-built "pod" at the SuperSTEM Lab. and will ensure the National Facility, its users and hence the UK remains at the forefront of aberration corrected STEM research and development. The combined monochromator/Cc corrector in a fully integrated state-of-the-art instrument will open up new areas for study. It will allow the full benefits of improved spatial resolution for STEM imaging and atomic resolution spectroscopy down to the low accelerating voltages necessary to study many nanomaterials. The improved energy resolution for electron spectrometry will open up new areas of study including the potential for vibrational spectroscopy.

Planned Impact

Associating the requested capital equipment with a newly formed, mid-range National Facility which has a strong and successful established base in terms of staff, experience and existing instrumentation is an ideal way to ensure a productive Pathway to Impact. Much of the detailed information required to evidence optimum use of the equipment has already been agreed with EPSRC as part of the Tender Process for the National Facility for Aberration Corrected STEM. Below we summarise the key points.
Specifically:
(a) Outreach to new users is detailed in Schedule 11 associated with Main Agreement.
This has involved creation of a dedicated National Facility website (http://www.superstem.com/) containing Facility information including Access Procedures, a Calendar, a Status and Announcement Page with detailed information about the EPSRC National Facility for AC-STEM operational status, a User Forum, Training Material including access to video lectures as recorded at the biennial, residential SuperSTEM summer school, an interactive instrument manual produced in collaboration with users and external links to further sources of information.
The EPSRC National Facility for AC-STEM staff will carry on its engagement in Electron Microscopy Schools and Workshops aimed at promoting and training the next generation of STEM Users. In addition there is set of presentations scheduled for departmental seminars at University institutions, at UK and international conferences, at workshops and specialised events. Staff scientists and Consortium members will continue to publish (in collaboration with users) regularly in a wide variety of high impact factor journals promoting the advanced capabilities of the instrumentation and the staff at the National Facility.
(b) Issues surrounding user support for data analysis are detailed in Schedules 1 and 9 associated with Main Agreement.
Unless otherwise pre-agreed with the User, the Daresbury SuperSTEM facility shall be responsible for the analysis of data sets from the samples supplied to the EPSRC National Facility for AC-STEM in order to meet the agreed User requirements. Should the User wish to utilise alternative data analysis resources, the Daresbury SuperSTEM facility shall be expected to provide the collected data in a format suitable for that analysis. Furthermore it is the aim, wherever possible to train users in data interpretation and analysis. Training and support facilities at the EPSRC National Facility for AC-STEM are always available to visiting experimenters. In addition to formally structured events, such as the biennial SuperSTEM School, more specialised courses, tailored to users' specific interests will be scheduled according to user demand.
(c) Suggested KPIs for usage and management which will allow monitoring of the success of the equipment usage. These have already been agreed with EPSRC as part of the tender process for the National Facility and are detailed in Schedule 2 associated with Main Agreement. The KPIs are collected monthly, reviewed at the regular Consortium Management meetings at Daresbury and reported at 3 monthly intervals to the Steering Committee and EPSRC. Briefly the KPIs involve:
-Number of Researchers that have been in contact and have used the National Facility;
-Facility Uptime;
-Number of Complaints;
-Numbers of Publications and Presentations;
-Number of samples investigated at Main Facility, Consortium Laboratories and Partner Laboratories.
The Steering Committee meets every six months to review and advise on Facility performance and equipment usage. The committee comprises:

Description 3D LS Spectrometer Pro
A 3D-photon correlation spectroscopy facility has been established in Leeds. This light scattering technique is used for the study of a wide range of soft matter systems where turbidity and thus multiple scattering of photons is a problem. This experimental technique makes it possible to perform full angular dependent light scattering investigations even in highly turbid media. The technique is being used on concentrated microgel suspension to study their structure and dynamics as well as in polymer gels, biological aggregating systems and a wide range of concentrated colloidal or polymeric systems both of fundamental and applied and/or industrial importance.

SQUID-VSM Magnetometer
A new superconducting quantum interference device - vibrating sample magnetometer (SQUID-VSM) was installed in Leeds in May 2013. It has the added capabilities of AC susceptibility and high temperature (1.8 - 1000 K) measurements in fields of up to 7 T.

Description 3D LS Spectrometer Pro A 3D-photon correlation spectroscopy facility has been established in Leeds. This includes a 3D-light scattering spectrometer with laser modulation option and a sample goniometer with a high temperature sample chamber. It also includes a second sample goniometer for rotation of samples that facilitates proper measurements on out-of-equilibrium samples. The set-up is equipped for full polarisation analysis and pseudo-cross correlation. The range of projects that are utilising the 3D-photon correlation spectroscopy equipment provide impact for materials understanding and design with a particular focus on turbid materials, out-of-equilibrium materials, and for research and development on complex formulations and biological materials. SQUID-VSM Magnetometer Since its installation, in addition to users from the University of Leeds, the SVSM has been used by groups in the universities of Durham, Heriot-Watt, Hull, Sheffield and Zaragoza (Spain). We have also added magneto-electric capabilities, performing the first measurements of electric control in multiferroics using this instrument. The instrument has not been down a single day since its installation. The liquid helium cryogenic plant at the school of Physics refills the liquid nitrogen and helium reservoirs roughly every week, and it is currently being used at full capacity. (March 2023) The suite of instruments will be moved into a state-of-the-art facility with full environmental control in the Bragg Centre for Materials Research in 2023 and will provide a centralised Faculty facility for Materials Characterisation

Impact The instrument was used to support an investigation of the influence of biomass pretreatment on gasification behaviour. The experiments performed including testing of the steam generator to simulate gasification behaviour of biocoal produced by hydrothermal carbonisation at different temperatures and steam flows. Experiments were able to establish influence of steam on biomass decomposition and allowed suitable conditions to be developed.

Impact The equipment is utilised by four PhD students (two are CDT). This instrument has enabled sampling in a range of environments to low concentrations for (1) Flash photolysis for the products of reactions of potential biofuels (ethers and alcohols), (2) Nitrogen chemistry (oxidations of amides and amines, relevant for low grade biomass (e.g. chipboard).   The equipment provides us with a much better way of identifying and quantifying stable products from reactions and has given new mechanistic insight as a result. Material using this apparatus has been presented this year at the International Conference on Chemical Kinetics (Chicago, May 2017). (3) The apparatus continues to facilitate work being undertaken on butanol oxidation and combustion mechanisms -to monitor butanol concentrations in laser flash photolysis experiments and looking at the fragmentation patterns prior to incorporation onto the HIRAC (Highly Instrumented Reactor for Atmospheric Chemistry) chamber, to study the atmospheric oxidation products of both biofuels and biofuel exhausts. (4) The analyser is also being used for dimethylether (DME) combustion mechanisms by using the mass spectrometer to look for the intermediates in DME combustion.

Impact This analyser is being used for the research on NOx from biomass since it enables measurement of extremely low N in biomass and derived products fuels (to 100ppm). This analyser is widely used by CDT and non-CDT students on team projects and PhD studies (e.g. this instrument facilitated the research carried out by Dooley, Benjamin (2017) Combustion characteristics of coal, biomass and their chars in air and oxy-fuel environments. Integrated PhD and Master thesis, University of Leeds). Furthermore, the development of a novel analytical technique to determine the fuel-nitrogen split between the volatile matter and char for high heating rate pyrolysis conditions is also being explored. Impact We have built an instrumental lab facilities for biomass stoves, which is one of the best in the country. This instrument is part of this set up. Currently being used for two PhD studies: (1) to examine the toxicity of emissions from cook stoves and (2) to determine the effect on emissions of pre-treated biomass fuels grown on contaminated land. The gas analyser was used by another PhD student to complete his studies on emissions from domestic biomass: E.J.S.M. (2017) Emissions from Residential Solid Fuel Combustion and Implications for Air Quality and Climate Change. Integrated PhD and Master thesis, University of Leeds.

Title 3D-photon correlation spectrometer 
Description A 3D-Photon correlation spectrometer has been installed in the School of Physics & Astronomy in Leeds. This equipment is unique in that it makes it possible to perform both static and dynamic light scattering on materials that range from optically transparent to opaque. Thus, both the arrangements and the movements of material building blocks such as colloidal particles, emulsion drops and protein or polymer chains can be studied in detail using scattering even if the dispersions are turbid.

Results and Impact A talk was given at the "Physics of Soft and Biological Matter" conference in Cambridge 6-8 April, 2016. This work is a collaboration between Anders Aufderhorst-Roberts, Simon Connell, Daniel Baker and Johan Mattsson focused on detailed studies of the mechanics of single microgel particles. The studied microgel particles were produced and originally studied within the EPSRC First Grant EP/J02113X/1 using scattering and AFM techniques, and the AFM studies were then taken further in terms of details and it is particularly this extended work that will be presented here.

This meeting evidenced and advanced development in dynamic in-situ environmental electron, scanning probe, optical and fast time resolved microscopy and computer modelling studies of vital interest in the chemical, physical and life sciences, underpinning technologies of high commercial and societal value. It focused on the pivotal role of imaging and spectroscopy for dynamic processes across the sciences to access previously invisible aspects of real world processes.
An accompanying journal issue for this meeting was published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A.

The poster presentation showed on-going work on a both fundamentally and industrially important polyelectrolyte system as studied using rheology and light scattering in Leeds (3D-PCS). The work was presented by J. Behra who is a PhD-student with T. Hunter, O. Cayre and J. Mattsson in Engineering and Physics in Leeds. This work which is partly industrially funded originally came out of a collaboration between J. Mattsson and O. Cayre which started with the First Grant work EP/J02113x/1 on microgel systems, where the NaCMC polyelectrolyte system is an important industrially motivated system which often shows strongly similar behaviour to model systems such as pNIPAM-based microgels.

Results and Impact Conference presentation with the title:Diffusing-wave spectroscopy in a standard dynamic light scattering setup. This work came out of a collaboration between researchers at TU Eindhoven and University of Leeds on light scattering in soft matter and is thus linked to the establishment of the 3D-PCS facility in Leeds. The work demonstrates how light scattering facilities can be used to study very highly turbid systems.

Results and Impact Be Curious is an annual University of Leeds research open day, run during the annual Leeds Festival of Science public events programme. In 2018, students from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Complex Particulate Products & Processes (CDT CP3) cohort 3 participated in this event. The students tied their activity to everyday products, this time with hands-on demonstrations of different types of emulsions and a game of 'match the SEM image' to the real-life product (including tea, washing powder and digestive biscuits).

The students also set up a display for a virtual SEM, with a link from one of the partners in the CDT (FEI, now ThermoFisher) http://myscopeoutreach.org/virtualSEM_explore.html.

At the 2018 event, there was a 'secret shopper' who visited all stands and reported back on their experience. For CP3, the feedback was 'Chemical Engineering - The couple of people at the stand were really engaging and had some really nice interactive activities.'

Results and Impact Be Curious is an annual University of Leeds research open day, run during the annual Leeds Festival of Science public events programme. Students from the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Complex Particulate Products & Processes (CDT CP3) have participated in two Be Curious days so far.

In 2015, CP3's cohort 1 hosted a stand which attracted large crowds with 2 interactive displays:

The first display used hydrophobic sand to demonstrate the engineering and science which can go into particulate engineering of water-proof products from mobile phone coatings and cases, through to fabrics and clothing. The second display looked at magnetic oils to show the diversity of engineering this tiny product is applied in from cars, to speaker systems, and the impact the innovation of this product has.

Feedback from the event was very positive, with comments about the event being 'a fantastic showcase for all types of engineering' and 'a really good way for young people to get interested or reassure their interest in engineering'.

In 2017, students from the CP3 CDT cohort 2 presented on 'From particle to product - chemical engineering in everyday life'. This time, the students tied their activity to the everyday products they investigated as part of their Reverse Engineering module completed in their first year, with hands-on demonstrations which were enjoyed and understood by both children and parents. The students also then had an opportunity to talk about their individual PhD projects.

One visitor commented very positively on the poster display and was impressed with the way that different concepts were explained (she was currently tutoring someone through GCSE Chemistry and would have appreciated something in a similar format as a resource for this pupil).

The organisers gave the following feedback; 'We had well over 1000 visitors on the day, and looking through the initial evaluation forms, they had a very positive experience. Talking to visitors on the day, they said the enthusiasm of the researchers on each stall was amazing.'

Results and Impact A workshop in modern light scattering technologies was jointly organised between the Soft Matter Physics Group and LS-instruments and was held in Leeds 12-14 June, 2013. The workshop offered a combination of lectures and laboratory experience on light scattering equipment including the 3D-photon correlation spectroscopy kit set-up in the School of Physics & Astronomy in Leeds based on EPSRC funding.

The workshop was very well received and researchers have expressed strong interest in the organisation of another similar event.
