Digital Economy 'New Economic Models' Network+

Lead Research Organisation: University of Surrey
Department Name: Business

Abstract

The business press is alive with considerations of how the 'Big 4' tech giants, Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon are challenging to become the single biggest provider of digital services. In business services there is intense competition between IBM, SAP and Oracle to provide 'knowledge solutions' and in B2G there are the challenges of 'assisted living', privatisation of education and healthcare and the Big Society' agenda. Looking to the near future the development of the 'internet of things' will increasingly provide information on objects and their location, their physical properties, how long they have been there, what they are being used for etc. This data, increasingly available on global platforms, enables individuals, social enterprises, public and private sector organisations to 'interact, communicate, collaborate and share information' in novel and progressive ways. (RCUK 2012). These platforms also have the potential to disrupt current economic structures radically, threatening established players and providing many opportunities for new entrants and new economic models (RCUK 2012).
This new environment raises a number of questions, eg to what extent will the digital revolution transform the whole economy, or will it be primarily limited to specific sectors for example information services and in what ways does the Internet enable or hinder trust between parties. Other challenges include the development of 'off the shelf' business models that are appropriate for different contexts eg start-ups. Perhaps most important of all given the potential for widespread availability of data on individuals and things, we will consider what is the balance between enabling customised and bespoke services and the issues of privacy and confidentiality, data integrity and security?

The objective of this grant is the development of an internationally leading network of academics and practitioners who will engage with those questions through the production of evidence based research. This knowledge will inform multiple groups including
Private sector organisations. These organisations need to be aware of the opportunities and threats emerging from the digital economy and need to be capable of reconfiguring their organisations to meet the strategic challenges.
Consultancy organisations. These organisations need to engage in the long term challenges to their client base faced by the development of multiple platforms. This includes the development of enhanced analytics.
Public sector and local government. This sector needs to engage in the opportunities offered by new economic models of partnering with private sector organisations, social enterprises and the customisation and personalisation required by customers.

Our vision is that at the end of 3 years we will have established an internationally leading community which has addressed these big research questions and challenges. It will have worked closely with both private and public sectors and engaged with policymakers to help enable an environment where organisations are better placed to take the opportunities offered by the digital economy.

Planned Impact

The emergence of the digital economy has profoundly influenced the way organisations design and deliver products and services. Companies such as Google and Facebook have successfully introduced innovative business models that leverage technology enabled interconnectivity. Our research will identify the next generation of economic models and forms of enterprise made possible by such technologies. The proposed research will also identify opportunities for existing businesses in sectors such as
. Private Sector organisations. The investigator team already have strong links with organisations such as Vodafone, Aviva, RBS, EDF, Virgin Media.
. Consultants. We will focus our efforts on the technology consultancy organisations. .
. Public sector. We will focus on various government agencies and have begun discussions with colleagues from the Rural Payments Agency (RPA).
. Local government. We have held preliminary discussions with Sutton Council, who are a Big Society pilot.
. Policy makers, eg RCUK.
. Industry Bodies. We have begun discussion with the communications management association who act as an industry body for Telcos.

In the commercial organisations in particular, there is a considerable drive to utilize new technology to improve their productivity, reduce risk, access new markets and accelerate their product and service development lifecycles. In an increasingly global market, the identification of new business models and opportunities for effective technology exploitation are essential to the future economic prosperity of the UK.

Identifying the economic implications of the digital economy is also important to public organisations in areas such as health provision, maintaining law and order and education. The research will develop theories and tools in respect of system configurations and dynamics which will help providers to reduce operating costs and enhance the quality of service provision.

National, regional and local policy making and management will benefit from a better understanding of the economic impact of new forms of social and economic interactions. For example, the emergence of virtual communities may impact the relevance and operation of institutions designed to operate in a purely physical environment.

Finally, the research will benefit academic groups particularly in technology departments eg computing and engineering and business schools. We will adopt an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation and dissemination in this field and ensuring rapid dissemination of knowledge through the use of innovative communication processes eg twitter, podcasts, briefing notes and white papers. This will be in addition to the formal academic publications in leading international journals. The participation of managers from public and commercial organisations in network events and workshops will also facilitate the rapid adoption of new knowledge.

Title Drones reveal efficiency savings in delivery services
Description Power Point Presentation
Type Of Art Creative Writing

Impact Drone delivery services (DDS) are an upcoming reality. Companies such as Amazon, DHL and Google are investing in developments in this area. German's parcel delivery company DHL has begun applying them commercially. This emphasises the importance to have insights in the economic benefits of drone delivery services. This study compares drone delivery services with traditional delivery services. It looks at the cost effectiveness of integrating drones into a delivery services' operations. The study identifies and categorise factors that control the delivery operations. It develops a mathematical model that compares 3D flight paths of a fleet of drones with a fleet of 2D van routes. The developed method can be seen as an extension of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP). Efficiency savings of drone services of real world rural postcode sectors are analysed. The study limits itself to the use of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with a low payload, which are GPS controlled and autonomous. The case study shows time, distance and cost savings when using drones rather than delivery vans. The model reveals efficiency factors to operate DDS. The study shows the economic necessity for delivering low weight goods via DDS. The primary methodological novelty of this study is a model that integrates factors relevant to drones into the VRP.

Title Green vehicle technology to enhance the performance of a European port
Description YouTube video NEMODE NetworkPlus we study the impact of using a new intelligent vehicle technology on the performance and total cost of a European port, in comparison with existing vehicle systems like trucks. Intelligent autonomous vehicles (IAVs) are a new type of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) with better maneuverability and a special ability to pick up/drop off containers by themselves. To identify the most economical fleet size for each type of vehicle to satisfy the port's performance target, and also to compare their impact on the performance/cost of container terminals, we developed a discrete-event simulation model to simulate all port activities in micro-level (low-level) details. We also developed a cost model to investigate the present values of using two types of vehicle, given the identified fleet size. Results of using the different types of vehicles are then compared based on the given performance measures such as the quay crane net moves per hour and average total discharging/loading time at berth. Besides successfully identifying the optimal fleet size for each type of vehicle, simulation results reveal two findings: first, even when not utilising their ability to pick up/drop off containers, the IAVs still have similar efficacy to regular trucks thanks to their better maneuverability. Second, enabling IAVs' ability to pick up/drop off containers significantly improves the port performance. Given the best configuration and fleet size as identified by the simulation, we use the developed cost model to estimate the total cost needed for each type of vehicle to meet the performance target. Finally, we study the performance of the case study port with advanced real-time vehicle dispatching/scheduling and container placement strategies. This study reveals that the case study port can greatly benefit from upgrading its current vehicle dispatching/scheduling strategy to a more advanced one. Title Managing Digitally Mediated Business Model Development Katy Mason
Description This short film reports on a study at the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst (SBC) to look at the emerging business modelling practices of this start-up. SBC's activities are helping to innovate the UK's bioscience industry and health markets by acting as an incubator, connector and catalyst for change. SBC's management team are acting in 'entrepreneurial ways', adopting relatively loose formal controls by circulating and developing a strong vision shared between funders, managers and other stakeholders (including GlaxoSmithKline, Wellcome Trust and BIS). The SBC site is designed to foster collaboration and interaction between tenant companies with the intention that the combination of opportunity and cooperation will generate innovation and commercial success.

Title Online Digital Market Place for Music Video Report
Description The online digital marketplace for music has proven to be extremely significant with regards to the wider creative economy in two key respects. First, the online sharing of music in digital formats has been at the leading edge of debates around intellectual property rights issues. The way in which the music industry has responded to the threats of digital piracy has set a precedent for the wider creative economy. Second, the technologies with which music is being distributed and consumed online are dynamic and changing rapidly, as, perhaps even more significantly, are consumer preferences. Again, this places the digital marketplace for music at the forefront of developments in the creative economy.
Type Of Art Artefact (including digital)

Impact The overall aim of the report is to undertake a survey of the contemporary online digital marketplace for music. This is a necessary and important task given that a) the very recent consumer preference for streaming content has rendered many recent academic and industry studies of online music already outdated; and b) business strategies and models in the music industry have had to adapt accordingly

Impact Given the minimal effect of the 4C's on website visitors and the importance of print circulation and twitter, it could be argued that it is time for a disruptive approach to the online business model and to concentrate on those elements of such that deliver greatest value. The author's suggestion in this regard is affiliate advertising, gaming(bingo and poker) and dating. Additionally, there should be an overhaul of newsletter, facebook and twitter content to match the above elements of the online business model.

Description One major output is a US and Uk patent. This is owned by a small Uk company BioBeats which now employs 16 staff and has raised over £3m in funding in 2 funding rounds. One of the key initiatives for this company was a visit by the owner, Dr David Plans to Samsung - this was funded by NEMODE.
Exploitation Route The wider research has funded over 90 projects and is being used by companies, organisations, public sector bodies and third sector organisations across the UK. These have been detailed in the outputs section and are more widely documented on the web site.
As mentioned previously we have also been successful in two further N+ applications, both of which had strong links to NEMODE.

Description One of the major impacts of NEMODE was to engage with the complex issues around the use of personal data. Various research groups were funded as part of that initiative and some of these have led to spin outs. For example, one of the NEMODE investigators, Prof Irene Ng now leads a start-up (dataswift.io) that has raised considerable venture capital funding and plays a leading role in the debate around how users can maintain control of their own personal data. NEMODE also provided placement funding for Dr David Plans to work with companies in Silicon Valley in developing his wearables technology. This led to the development of a patent. The company was recently acquired by HUMA and played a significant role in remote patient monitoring during the COVID pandemic. Other successes include the early support for the work of Professor Annabelle Gawer at the University of Surrey who is now firmly established as a world leading scholar on digital platforms. Development of a research community actively researching and publishing in Digital Economy. .Development of two new centres of the digital economy, University of Surrey and University of Exeter both now 'next stage centres'. . Contribution to the development of RCUK research calls related to the digital economy (NEMINDE calls, £8m) and DLT call. . Involvement with Speaker's Commission on digital democracy . Contribution to 3 new start-ups related to mobile and internet of things. . New patents related to mobile apps and healthcare.

Description 6. Hindle GA and Vidgen RT (2015). AnVIM: a methodology for creating business value with business analytics, EURO Conference, Glasgow.
Geographic Reach National
Policy Influence Type Influenced training of practitioners or researchers
Impact We have one paper on the analytics methodology in preparation targeted at EJORS (to be submitted in March), another paper on the analytics prototype in progress, and plan to produce a technical paper on Bayesian modelling of food banks and a further paper on business models and SSM. We are presenting the project and methodology at a seminar for the York and Humber OR Society on 23 Feb in Sheffield (expecting around 30 people). We have also agreed to present the food bank project at the OR Society Analytics Summit on 21 June in London (high profile event with 200-300 attendees). Based on the prototype in phase 2 of the project we submitted a bid to Nominet Trust for 50k to develop the prototype further, with the full support of the Trussell Trust (they get the cash and we do the work). The proposal has passed the first round successfully and we are waiting on an imminent final decision. The project has had a substantial impact on the Trust and how it uses data. They now see the value of data and are upgrading systems and processes to get better quality data to build more useful models. We are also looking at getting all food banks into our visualisation tool (not just Trust food banks) to provide the first complete view of food poverty in the UK (this should have impact on Government policy via the Trust's lobbying). The phase 2 work is complete and the report written. We report on the implementation of analytics and the building of a geo-spatial prototype for visualisation of food banks, using open data (Census) and Google maps combined with Trust data (all done with open source). The technology may have legs as a commercial offering if we can extend it with the Nominet funding.

Description In 2012 David Plans (VP Product) and Davide Morelli (VP Engineering) pitched their programme to sonify and visualize brain waves using just a custom-built headset and an iPhone to me and I immediately saw the opportunity to use heart data to create and influence experiential music. David Plans also saw that he could now fulfill a long time vision of his, elegantly merging healthcare and entertainment. They set out to test our concepts and partnered with retro funk hip hop group, The Far East Movement and created an event powered by over 1.5 million heart beats. The team went on to win the Spotify hackathon Echonest Prize at SXSW for their experiment 'Pulse'. And then BioBeats wrote history again... they built a tool that would allow the audience at a venue to stream their heartbeats to the DJ booth and for the DJ to use that information to influence his set

Company Name Aida Technologies
Description Our vision is centred on four core premises: personal engagement, combining health and wellbeing, collective responsibility, and intelligent person-centred data services. Personally-controlled medical record platforms will contribute to restore our personal responsibility towards healthy living, reduce healthcare costs and improve transparency and accountability, whilst helping to break information and knowledge silos. Given that citizens are becoming active co-producers of healthcare information, open, inter-operable and scalable information platforms linking citizens, carers, and professional, can provide a new channel for enabling self-care. With a growing wellbeing market and the emergence of on-line personal health records, healthcare information is starting to accumulate at much earlier stages. This creates an opportunity to reach up stream in health promotion and preventive activities. Relying on intelligent data services and open data standards, and enabled by opening the garden-wall approach of current personally-controlled medical record platforms, independent software application developers would be able to envision new health data services linked to emergent demands from proactive consumers of pre-primary care (health + wellbeing) services. A federated approach to data management, enabled by mobile technologies, would allow proactive personal engagement and collective responsibility, and help improve cost-effectiveness of healthcare services. In addition, gamification of medical applications have the potential to improve compliance and the formation of healthy habits. Intelligent data repositories and services will help not only integrate electronic health information, but also enable evidence-based 'collective' decision making amongst carers and clinical providers and unleash new knowledge and discoveries.

Results and Impact Big Data and business analytics are becoming an increasing worry for the company board and senior executives. Have they "missed the boat", is there any value in the data anyway, and if there is, is it relevant to their organisation. Whilst there is much hype associated with them, most organizations struggle to develop coherent strategies, procedures and governance mechanisms to deal with Big Data. Advances in ICT have led to an exponential growth in the volume, variety, granularity and rate of generation of the data (velocity) that organizations can access. This has confronted managers with challenges and opportunities: how to harness these data and leverage them for strategic positioning and enhanced value propositions and performance (see Professor Vidgen's blog for an introduction and commentary).
The purpose of the event is to bring together senior managers, business leaders, and practitioners and academics to identify topics in Big Data and business analytics that are of key importance to industry. The aim of the workshop is to investigate:
How can organizations use Big Data and business analytics to create business value?
What barriers and enablers to the exploitation of Big Data and analytics do organizations face?
How can industry, the public sector and academia collaborate to address these issues?

Dr Pridmore emphasized the importance of privacy's being a value embedded in organizational life prior to and encompassing the development of new goods and services. In this respect, most privacy by design processes were an afterthought and most organizations did not intrinsically value privacy.

Results and Impact The world's leading digital platform businesses now have a combined market capitalisation of $4 trillion. Yet only 4% of this value has been generated by European firms. How can European businesses compete with US and Chinese 'digital platforms' like Google, Amazon, Facebook and Alibaba and the vast armada of 'unicorn' platforms like Uber, Airbnb, Netflix, Salesforce and Paypal? Incumbent businesses in all sectors around the world are wrestling with how to thrive and survive in an increasingly digital and platform-based economy, but European enterprises are further hampered by the lack of a single digital market to support their growth.Presents new research from the first comprehensive study of the global platform economy

Results and Impact This report presents an overview of the development of an emerging research agenda, facilitated by the Centre for Research into Information, Surveillance and Privacy (CRISP) and funded by NEMODE +. The agenda explores the theme of how privacy can be designed into organizational processes and technologies. The report is titled 'Designing Privacy In: Setting the Research Agenda'. It captures the activities initiated by CRISP in order to identify key research issues and sets out a future research agenda. The report is therefore both a record of activity and a statement of research potential.
The report provides a brief summary of two main research activities: (1) a research workshop held in London in November 2014 and including participants from academia, practice and civil society, and (2) an expert panel session of the Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) Conference, Europe's leading conference for data protection experts, held in Brussels in January 2015. Both activities were facilitated and delivered by CRISP. These activities have produced a number of direct outputs, including a series of presentations, engagement and discussion with practitioners, experts and civil society, and two short films. The overall outcome is a recognition and definition of an emergent research agenda around the commercial feasibility of privacy by design, relevant to both academia and practice.
From the outset, it is important to acknowledge the support given to CRISP to help facilitate the activities discussed in this report. The workshop hosted by CRISP Open University in London on 19 November 2014 was supported financially by the RCUK/EPSRC funded NEMODE (New Economic Models in the Digital economy) 'network plus' research programme1, and the expert panel session at the 2015 CPDP conference in Brussels was supported financially by CPDP2. The CRISP Directors would also like to thank all the experts who gave up their time to participate in this intellectual endeavour.
The report has three main sections. Following the introduction, Section 2 sets out the research objectives. Section 3 presents the research activity associated with the London workshop and Section 4 that associated with the expert CPDP panel in Brussels. Section 5 sets out a series of research outcomes, including the emergent research agenda. Following this are a number of annexes capturing information relevant to the research activities, and in particular copies of slides used during the workshop and expert panel.

Results and Impact In February 2015 we held a discursive research workshop inviting industry professionals from the creative arts sector to interrogate and discuss the statement: Exploring the barriers to developing new data-driven business models in the creative arts sector. The session aimed to stimulate a discussion and debate about the internal and external barriers which are stalling data-driven activity from progressing further or even starting. We also questioned how organisations and the sector as a whole could capitalise on the opportunity presented by data-driven
approaches, and the level of appetite within the sector to embrace such strategic opportunities. The workshop presentation gave a brief
overview of common data disciplines and profiled the role and use of data, big data and open data within the commercial sector and public sector. The case studies presented pointed to how data is being used in the commercial sector to better understand consumer behaviour.
This theme was translated into the creative arts sector in terms of visitor experience, with case studies focusing on how data had been used to gain insight about users / audiences to make more informed decisions. Attendees reflected and responded to the presentation in small, facilitated group discussions post the presentations, going on to share their experiences and understanding of this agenda in an open
forum discussion. The session's key findings segmented into three themes: Skills, Expertise and Understanding, Funding Landscape and
Organisational Culture.
The workshop itself stimulated an array of potential further research opportunities. The areas that were thought to warrant further exploration
were: a study and simplification of the language to describe data-driven activity and case studies from across the creative industries; dissemination of the design principles that underpin current business models in the digital economy; training and skills audit for the requirements of such models; greater consultation pre-funding design for dedicated digital and data-related funds or investment; types of beneficial cross-sector collaborative processes and platforms; and lastly, greater understanding of the conditions in which new data-driven approaches flourish would support cross-disciplinary and cross-sector learning.

Results and Impact The workshop led by Prof Maull explored how to develop research projects and use these new scientific research tools and methods in social sciences based on these observations, particularly through the use of the HAT Micro-server data account that allows research respondents to donate their actual behavioural data (spending, location, activities, sleep) to research. The participants had an opportunity to practice with simulated HAT data, and discussed how to use behavioural visibility in the form of data to craft a robust and useful research project, how to set up respondent panels, create rules and put in place tests for reliability, and validity, ensure robust and unbiased experimental design, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of results. This provoked a great deal of questions and discussions and increased interest within the 30 people who were involved.

Results and Impact This workshop series in socio-technical systems has now been running for a number of years and was stimulated by the common observation that the most valuable aspect of conference and workshop attendance is the conversations between the sessions. We focus on discussion in convivial surroundings, stimulated by a small number of keynote speakers that we ask to be provocative and ample room for ideas to form and for discussion to flow. We value attendees for their wisdom and experience, and their openness to engage in meaningful discussion - we don't expect you to have to do a lot of preparatory work creating huge slide decks. We strictly limit attendance to 30 people, by invitation only and we deliberately invite a mix of senior people - from industry, government and universities and from different disciplinary backgrounds. Discussions are under 'Chatham House rules' i.e. are non-attributable and we ask people to be careful what they say on social media.

The attendees were comprised of a mixture of practitioners, aspiring digital entrepreneurs, and academics interested in the field.

The programme was comprised of exclusively filmed interviews with industry leaders such as Jaqueline de Rojas of TechUK, keynote speeches from women organising mentorship programs to support young women in tech and STEM, coaching workshops, and roundtable discussions topically guided by the interests and concerns of the participants. All invited speakers attended.

An active and vibrant online discussion took place alongside the in-person meeting via the Twitter hashtag #missinginaction15, composed of hundreds of tweets.

Feedback received by the participants emphasised the quality of the roundtable discussions and the benefit they gained from the keynote presentations. We created event evaluation forms that received a nearly 100% response rate. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being high) all participants rated the event 8-10 for overall impressions, content and organisation.

Results and Impact The upsurge of interest in data and data science provides a source of opportunities and threats for operational researchers. In this seminar we will explore the intersection of soft and hard OR, data science and IT and consider the contribution of each to business analytics. In particular, we aim to build an agenda for change for the operational research community as it navigates the business analytics and data science space. The seminar will be illustrated with examples from projects we are currently involved in; the first is a geospatial analysis of food banks, which is built using Python, R, and d3, and the second a text mining and social network analysis of research outputs. For both projects data visualization and ICT skills are of central importance.

Dr. Giles Hindle is a Senior Lecturer at Hull University Business School and an Associate Fellow at Warwick Business School. He has conducted consultancy and research projects for a wide range of clients including the NHS Scottish Executive, County Councils Network, Countryside Agency, Department for Transport, Department for Health in N. Ireland, Network Rail plc, Northern Hi-Tec Ltd, and many others. He has specialist knowledge in soft systems thinking and quantitative modelling which he has practiced in both strategic and operational contexts. Giles has developed business analytics masters courses for the universities of Warwick and Hull.

Richard Vidgen is Professor of Business Analytics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Business School, Sydney. Following fifteen years working in the IT industry as a consultant and a project manager he worked at the School of Management, University of Bath, and then as Professor of Systems Thinking at Hull University Business School. His research specialisms are in agile software development and business analytics, both of which he approaches through soft systems and complex adaptive systems theory. His background and skills in IT and quantitative methods have enabled him to develop his practical skills in data science. He is a member of the OR Society's Analytics Development Group and is taking an active role in helping shape the future of OR and data science.

Results and Impact The Medialab Session and Media Innovation Studio brought coders, business minds, entrepreneurs, students, journalism and media professionals from across Europe and America together for 48 hours. Using innovative brain storming and facilitation methods, and a series of workshops, we set out to build five media startups across one weekend. The teams pitched to a panel of expert Dragons to find a winning startup. The process was outputted live through multimedia and social media in order to make the ecosystem collaborative and open. What we found went deeper than the creation of a startup. The process shed new light on the process of media innovation, probing what open innovation means and what needs to happen to benefit the UK digital economy.
Workshop aims:1. To bring together a European community of media innovators
2. To better understand media innovation and media ecosystems
3. To explore open source processes in media innovation, as a test case for the wider business sector
4. To create an environment that makes innovation possible
42 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN THE WEEKEND EVENT
The key roles were: Participants, Fab Lab, Mentors, Organisers, Dragons
Participants were central to the event. Their role was to work in five teams to build a media startup in 48 hours.
Fab Lab was made up of coders from Makers Academy and a professional mobile game coder from Hull. They were paid a fee to offer coding and build support to the teams aiming to create a working prototype by the end of the weekend.
Organisers and Mentors were roles which overlapped (n = 9). This included members of Medialab Session: Neila Romdane, Romain Saillet, Yann Herteaux. Gayane Adourian acted as the newsroom, capturing the event and boosting network activity. Clare Cook, Paul Egglestone, John Mills and Andy Dickinson represented Media Innovation Studio (MIS) and offered organisational, technical and mentoring support. Charlie Craven from MIS focussed on data capture and video outputs.
Dragons were personally invited for their knowledge of the media startup scene, or for their expertise as investors. They were asked to take part in several activities: to participate in a Remerge capture around qualitative questions relating to the core themes of the event; to record talking head videos around media innovation and their experiences; to act as a judging panel for the five team startups that were created including deliberations; to offer feedback to the teams; to network and discuss ideas with the Participants. It was the intention of the event to launch a winning startup so the input from Dragons was key.
A NUMBER OF METHODS WERE USED ACROSS THE WEEKEND TO EXPLORE AND CREATE A MEDIA STARTUP; Remerge;Remerge free draw tool;Remerge set response questions; Facilitation and pitch games; Keynote talk;Unconference style sessions ; Masterclasses; Build time; Pitching;

Results and Impact The digital economy is a key consideration for both businesses and policy makers. However the
environment in which it exists in is very dynamic. It is important that businesses and policy
makers understand how the digital economy evolves and how it interacts with the
environment that it exists in. READIE's first annual research conference will allow delegates to
understand the state of the field from the perspective of both industry and academia. Examples
of good practise of how these two groups work together will be included. The conference is
also an opportunity to build a European digital economy research community.
The conference will focus on the following four themes.
1) Measuring Europe's digital economy
2) Digital disruption of traditional industries
3) Business opportunities in open and big data

Results and Impact Some common themes of the first day included:

Creation of a Web Observatory in Bangalore: Potentially part of a growing network of web observatories around the world. They are a place to share open data on how the web is used, and for that data to be used and analysed by academics and industry, then returned to the observatory for others to use.
Social machines into action: "Many people acting together through online tools". Many of the presentations highlighted examples of social machines becoming something outside of the web. Social networks effecting business change, apps to crowd source information about the location of artwork, or massively open online course spontaneously spawning real-world local support groups.
Crowd sourcing for disruption response: From Twitter and travel disruption to data from social media during major weather events as case studies. A key questions: how to define the provenance of data sourced from social media, and use it to make judgments about accuracy?
Online Trust and Privacy: Privacy is a fluid concept on the web. Of particular interest was what privacy concerns need to be addressed in order to be able to deliver public services through the web. With projects like Aadhaar coming through, this will be an important question for India.

On the second day, the above themes were discussed in smaller groups. A major outcome was that IIIT-B will take forward the establishment of a Web Observatory in Bangalore. Several of the group were keen to hold a Web Observatory Workshop in Bangalore later this year, with others also interested in a wider event on social media and analytics. Rather than being another research discussion, this would be an opportunity for young researchers from the UK and India to get together for a week, carry our joint analysis of with big data sets about web use and show off what they can do.

On the final day, several of the group stayed on in Bangalore to visit companies and institutions in the city. They explored the ongoing relationship between the Web Science Trust and Infosys, while others learnt about Infosys's impressive sustainability programme. There was also a meeting with Cognizant to understand their social media analytics tools and showcase of some of Microsoft Research's work, such as IVR Junction, for emerging markets.

The move has significant implications for HR because, while popular, a switch to services is not always straightforward. There are five key challenges that HR will have to address:
Changing mind-sets
Shifting to a service culture

Results and Impact The aim of the Sync the City event was to bring together Norfolk's business community of entrepreneurs, product developers, software developers, designers and digital creatives (members of SyncNorwich's virtual technology and startup community) with the University
of East Anglia's students and to facilitate them to form startups to solve some of Norfolk's key challenges. The mixed business and student teams then had to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges at the end of the event, to win a prize. Sync the City aligns with the Research Councils' UK Digital Economy Theme in that it aims to bring together bright and innovative minds from a range of fields and to support businesses in the digital technologies area. The aim of the event is to create new business models and startups that are enabled by digital technologies, to identify and exploit new opportunities within the digital world.

The judges were Jon Bradford (MD of Techstars, London), James Duez (serial entrepreneur and local Angel Investor), Tim O'Shea (local Angel Investor), Tom Wood (CEO of Foolproof) and Fiona Lettice (Professor of Innovation Management, Norwich Business School, UEA). Emma Swift of Tech City UK gave the Keynote presentation on Thursday night and Neil Garner of Proxama gave the Endnote presentation on Saturday night.

The benefits for the Sync the City attendees were that they had the opportunity to expand their network and get to know people with similar interests in the local digital economy. This may lead to new business collaborations, new customers, new investors and internships or job offers. Attendees had the opportunity to form teams and learn from others with different skills sets and competencies. They were able to seek and receive advice from established businesses through the mentoring sessions. They also had the opportunity to learn how to go from an idea to a minimum viable product and deliver a pitch in just 54 hours. For students, they tested whether the theory they have been learning
works in practice. Startup weekends often form successful startups either based on the ideas from the weekend or from forming relationships that continue after the event. At a community level, this event was about building a startup culture and creating an impact using digital technologies. It was also about showing that Norwich and Norfolk have a vibrant and growing digital economy.

A dedicated website was created for Sync the City at www.syncthecity.com. This website
gave full details of the event, mentors, judges, agenda and sponsors.

Results and Impact The Research Councils UK Digital Economy Theme is supporting research to rapidly realise the transformational impact of digital technologies on aspects of community life, cultural experiences, future society, and the economy. To achieve this RCUK have brought together a unique community of researchers (from diverse disciplines including social science, engineering, computer science, the arts and medical research) and users (people, business, government) to study, understand and find solutions to real problems. In an increasingly global economy, as new and established companies and individuals use digital technologies to innovate, markets can change rapidly and business models are being adapted or created in response the opportunities and challenges the digitisation poses. Within this context, the NEMODE Network+ (New Economic Models in the Digital Economy) has been established to promote and enable research in this domain and develop an internationally leading community which produces evidence based knowledge to address big questions such as what are the new economic models and in what contexts are different models appropriate. As part of this initiative, NEMODE has supported a number of workshops across the UK bringing together representatives of academic, industry and policy communities to engage in debate and advance knowledge. The Gamification in the Events Industry Workshop is another such event in this series and was organised by Professor Kiran Fernandes at the University of Durham.

Results and Impact little is known about the overall subjective value of digital technology from the perspective of the theatre creator. Arts Council England (2014)
upholds 'the general value of arts and culture to society has long been assumed, while the specifics have just as long been debated'. This cross-disciplinary work combines elements of organizational studies and theatre studies in a single case study (Yin, 2003) to identify how we
might represent and account for societal as well as monetised values (Potts, 2011). More specifically, the work will explore the effects on makers using the latest digital technologies within theatre as 'from the point of view of organizational phenomena, technology seems to be everywhere in the world of practice' (Orlikowski and Scott, 2008). The work will answer ''To what extent does digital technology affect interactive theatre today?' Rich qualitative responses from 'sensemaking' narratives (Brown et al., 2008; Czarniawska-Joerges, 2004) of interactive theatre makers lead the scope for impact to both scholarly and practice levels.

Results and Impact An Interactive Workshop to explore values of theatre from both academic and theatre maker perspective - funded by NEMODE (New Economic Models for the Digital Economy), the Research Council UK and Lancaster University.
Creative Industries are key to both cultural and economic progress in an increasingly competitive world. Divisions of the arts and culture industries, including theatre, are the largest contributors to the industry's collective turnover estimated £5.9 billion. Yet, little is known about the overall value of digital technology in theatre. There is a growing body of research into audience perceptions and value on both sides of the Atlantic. However, there are few inquiries into theatre makers and their perceptions on the value of digital technologies in theatre.

Speakers and Structure: We propose that CADE2015 follows the same programme structure as CADE2014 with 8 speakers each giving 90-120 minute talks over the course of 3 days. We will invite 7 speakers from UK and EU and one speaker from overseas. Four though leaders in the area of new business models and digital economy, specifically Prof. Irene Ng (Warwick), Prof. Roger Maull (Surrey), Dr. Roger Cliffe (Warwick) and Dr. Glenn Parry (UWE) have already confirmed their participation. We will also develop CADE2015 challenge along the lines similar to CADE2014 but with concentration on personal data economy. One of the last year's speakers was a practitioner from Zalando Brands in Berlin who gave a talk on Big Data. This year we will also invite a speaker from private sector to provide a nice link between academic research and practice for the school's participants.

following: University of the West of England, University of Exeter, Aston University, Lancaster University,
Warwick University, Strathclyde University, and Reading University (Henley). The series has also received
support from the British Academy of Management, The British Library and NEMODE.
While the antecedents of the business model concept originated in established academic disciplines, its
rise to prominence took place relatively recently. This prominence as a concept was fuelled by digital
innovation and the Internet, and its potential as a unifying mechanism presents significant opportunities
for competitive development in both research and practice. To realise the innovation potential from a focus
on business models and business modelling, significant challenges, such as entrenched organisational and
behavioural norms, need to be addressed. This White Paper surfaces these opportunities and challenges
and provides a point of departure for intellectual debate. Specifically, it identifies these opportunities and
challenges from multiple perspectives and offers a set of recommendations for academia, business, funding
councils, and government.

Results and Impact This is a supplementary blog space to the NEMODE project. It provides a perspective of new business models that emerged in the fashion retail sector in particular through developments in the digital economy.

NEMODE (New Economic Models in the Digital Economy) is a multidisciplinary initiative designed to create a network of researchers and practitioners to explore new economic models in the digital economy. The project, which began in April 2012 and has funding of £1.5 million over the next three years, is an initiative under the Research Councils UK (RCUK)'s Digital Economy (DE) research programme.

This blog space contributes to the production of some of the foundational materials for use by the network over the life of the project and beyond. Here, we explore a historical (not speculative) perspective of the fashion retail sector, examining how this important sector of the economy is changing through the development of technology.

Results and Impact The workshop is designed to address questions that can generate lasting benefit for delegates and to the research network more widely. The following objectives for the session are:
• To articulate and define collaborative revenue capture as a term
• To explore how digital technologies can facilitate collaborative revenue capture
• To evaluate potential in workable platforms and models for collaborative revenue capture (such as shared paywalls, revenue share brokerage models, anonymous donation platforms, niche crowdfunding sites, collaborative ecommerce)
• To assess the extent to which collaborative revenue capture can be used for the benefit of the exiled media sector

Within this the workshop will have as its outputs:
• For MIS to produce a summary and report of the workshop conversations via Remerge, including a proposed definition of collaborative revenue capture
• For donor representatives to leave with a clearer idea of how they might move their organisations to better understand potential revenue capture for exiled media
• For donor representatives to leave with a sense of where the academic community is working and potential benefits of and opportunities for collaboration
• For academics to build opportunities for collaboration to explore identified research opportunities and to bid for future research funding round practical projects which overcome identified barriers to revenue capture
• For academics to develop a set of research questions/scope future research projects
