Digital Economy Sustainable Society Network+

Lead Research Organisation: Imperial College London
Department Name: Imperial College Business School

Abstract

Sustainable Development and Sustainability are some of the most commonly talked about concepts in media today. "Sustainable Society", however, remains very difficult to actually define. For the purposes of this Network+, however, we have selected the following as a working definition:
"A Sustainable Society refers to one that takes into account the benefit of future generations of both the UK and the earth in its decision making processes through the protection and appropriate use of our economic, social and natural resources".
While the potential role that ICT can play has long been touted in the commercial sector, true interdisciplinary research covering the multitude of aspects involved in economically, socially and environmentally viable solutions for society is sparse. Some pockets of evidence exist that indicate the potential for ICT to have on sustainability, these remain pockets, however, and there is a need to ensure the continued collaboration around these important topics.
At the same time, digital technologies are in the process of tearing down traditional barriers between sectors, and the mobile and cloud computing platforms may be viewed as forming the "nexus of contracts" of the global economy. The role that these platforms play has a distinct role in the development of sustainable regions and nations as new communities, businesses and structures of government are formed in response to the incredible rise in data streams. For example, the vision of responsive and agile local services was traditionally hampered by a shortage of information. Today, the problem is opposite - information overload.
Research into the role of ICT in supporting the development of a sustainable society covers an extremely large number of research areas, from water, waste, energy, local and national transport infrastructures, national and international supply chains, rural and urban enterprise infrastructures, community development and social infrastructure support mechanisms. The systems that form the basis of our society are now extremely complex systems, with multiple layers and multiple interactions between the economic, social and environmental spheres - it is not possible to affect one without affecting the others. Research is required to understand the nature of these interactions and how to best deliver services within them.
In such complicated systems, it is extremely difficult for academics working in these areas to know the right people in other research groups and areas. Often, researchers have to bypass opportunities to apply for research grants because they do not have the right research partners, be they academic, industrial or third sector/NGO. As a result, opportunities to address policy and research challenges within Digital Economy are missed. In addition, UK companies are unable to take advantage of a multidisciplinary approach to their problems so the opportunity to create genuine, lasting, real-world change and value creation is also missed.
Over the next three years, we aim to redress these missed opportunities. This Network+ aims to change the landscape of connections between research communities in order to create a vibrant network of researchers who take not just a Digital Economy approach back to their home disciplines, but a Sustainable Society approach as well. We aim to seed a grassroots movement across Britain of researchers who naturally approach research questions from an economic, social and environmental perspective, with a particular focus on creating links between current researchers and the next generation of researchers. Through establishing these links, we will also identify the emerging research challenges within the Digital Economy.

Planned Impact

The DE Challenge Area Sustainable Society Network+ will create impact on several levels, including academic communities across the broad spectrum of activities ongoing within the context of 'Sustainable Society', the third sector and industry both nationally and internationally as and when appropriate. Through these interactions, Network+ membership will identify the new research challenges associated with the use of ICT to create a sustainable economy, environment and society.

Every project funded through this Network+ will be deliver impact both to the Network and the wider communities that members are associated with. Each project will report back its findings to the Network+ and illustrate those research challenges that they have uncovered. In this manner, impact is designed into the heart of every project that will be run during these network activities.

The research community associated with 'Sustainable Society' contains great breadth and depth. Every activity will therefore contain some aspect of interdisciplinarity or multidisciplinarity. Through this Network+, new research collaborations well be formed that allow members to exchange methods, best practice, knowledge, background and access to other relevant networks.

This Network+ will also inform the research challenges that will help define potential future research areas within the application of ICT to the creation of a Sustainable Society. Through this, the SS Network will create not just new avenues for research but also identify emerging areas of interest.

SS Network will engage fully with the existing DE communities that are already established, for example the DE hubs and the DTCs across the country. The SS Network will ensure that there is a suitable level of network activity across the UK in order to ensure as great a potential for impact as possible for all members of the Network.

Specifically, network activities are focussed around creating impact through capacity development for members in order to become ambassadors for 'Sustainable Society', empowering them to take the message to as wide a community of people as possible. All network activities are designed around ensuring that this 'network of networks' is created and nourished from day one.

Description The Network+ was designed to connect best with best and create a flourishing network of researchers investigating the role of digital technologies in creating a sustainable society. We have been extremely successful in this with a number of successful events, a YouTube Channel, a website and newsletter to keep people engaged and informed. We have managed to allocate the significant majority of our Pilot Study funding with a total of 30 academic papers published from this research so far.

More importantly, however, the Network+ has engaged in detailed Horizon Scans with regards to digital technologies and their application in the future of our society. The aims of these Horizon Scans were to identify the remaining areas of research in relation to Sustainable Society. We found significant new areas that require investigation. The results of these studies were made available in 245 pages of analysis in the following industries
1 Retail
2 Energy
3 Transport
4 Finance
5 Media
6 Food and Agriculture

A final overall report was also developed that outlined the core underlying economic fundamentals of the "digital economy", which are fundamentally different to those of the industrial economy. The Horizon Scans were able to provide the empirical evidence of this shift in our economy, environment and society.
Exploitation Route Several companies have already used the Horizon scans. Others in the research community have also already used them to apply for their DE Next Stage applications.

Dr C. Mulligan has been selected to participate in the United Nations Secretary General's High Level Panel on Digital Co-operation between 2018 and 2019. Horizon scans and publications have been used to contribute to the UN Panels work with report being released in June 2019.

Some parts of the work has been used in collaboration with UCL's GovTech Labs (www.govtechlab.org) developing the foundation of a project called DataNet.

Description The pilot studies have been used to help researchers apply for further follow on funding but they have not informed us how much. The research conducted has been used extensively within EU Commission and within the UK. I have also been invited to become and government adviser for the Australian Government on the Digital Economy. The Horizon Scans have been well received and used by research colleagues in their applications to DE Next Stage and also by several companies. Ericsson have also put them on their global website in order to help us gain extra traction with the 'reach' of the reports - so far two of them have been downloaded over 3500 times in a 1.5 months. Within the network itself, we have had good impact: · SSN Transport event alone resulted in 510 hours workshop attendance (let me know if you want me to round up the other workshops) · The SSN youtube channel, which hosts presentations from Transport Futures and Foodbanks, has had a total of 947 views. · We have been using JISCM@IL to communicate with our network who have received roughly two messages per month since September 2013. · 3,156 have visited the SSN Imperial site over the last year. The SustainableSocetyNetwork.net website receives approximately 200 hits per week, depending on whether we have open and active calls available. In addition, the Network has run several successful events, listed below. Urban Prototyping London - April 2013 Attendees - 550 During April - June 2013, Sustainable Society Network+ and NEMODE Network+, led by Dr Catherine Mulligan from Imperial College, ran the "Urban Prototyping", or "UP London" festival. This festival was a unique experiment in innovation and digital technology in the urban space. An initiative of the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA), Urban Prototyping, or UP Festivals, explores how technology, art, and design can serve as new tools for civic participation in a digital era. Our theme for UP London was: Digital Innovation to create resilient environments, economies and communities. Through UP London, we explored how digital technologies can be used to create a Sustainable Society through empowering, engaging and connecting citizens to create resilience in their local communities. Transport Futures - Friday 21st March 2014. Imperial College London Attendees - 102 Our workshop sought to bring together transport sector specialists, industry experts, policy-makers, researchers and the private sector to exchange ideas and discuss key areas that could be disrupted by advances in digital technology. These are: • Change driven by the knowledge transfer of ICT solutions between the inter-city and commuter transport sectors. • New measures of success in climate change mitigation and/or adaption through "big data" in transport. • New measurements of gains and losses after disruptive changes to travel activity and congestion. • Future ICT in demand management, changing our understanding of the balance between transport efficiency and accessibility. • Change to the industrial structure of real-estate driven by advances in transport technology. Presentations were made by speakers from Imperial College London, Transport for London, Department for Transport, LSE Cities, Nanyang Technological University, Leeds University Business School as well as the Universities of Cambridge / Manchester / Oxford / Northumbria / Southampton Digital Technologies for Sustainable Local Agri-Food Systems - Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th July 2014. Imperial College London Attendees - 37 Organized by Sustainable Society Network+ as part of its research activities into the use of digital technologies to create a sustainable society in conjunction with the Scaling the Rural Enterprise project. Digital technologies have a role to play in the co-ordination of local and "short" supply chains. Within this workshop, we will brought together a variety of researchers and others active in food supply chains in order to explore the use of digital technologies (DTs) in alternative agri-food networks (AAFNs) in their scaling-up process and also in the food supply and distribution system to cities focusing on the "Urban Food Strategies". Presentations were made by speakers from FoodTrade, FarmDrop, New Venture Advisors LLC, Aston Business School, Folk Labs, Centre for Technology and Development, MIT-IBM Network Science Research Center, Imperial College London and the Universities of Coventry, Wageningen, Swansea, Nottingham Design for Sharing, as new economy or age-old sustainable practice - Tuesday 4th November. Cinema Museum, London Attendees - Final count TBC, 100+ pre registrations This day reviewed sharing as a social, economic and environmental good, discussing how social cohesion as well as resource exploitation might be fostered and presenting examples of the nuanced work of local initiatives based in London and beyond. Bringing together experts from community, policy, academia and media discussions our workshop discussed how we can design to support sustainability through sharing and what the sharing economy might contribute. Presentations were made by speakers from Makerspace, Brockley Society, The Centre for Architecture and Sustainable Environment, University of Kent, NESTA, Timebanking UK, People Who Share and Casserole Club Member Run Pilot Studies: Title of Research Project DESIGN FOR SHARING Name of Principal Investigator and University Ann Light, Northumbria University AUTHOR(S) TITLE REFERENCE Journal/Conf. year vol. page Light, A. and Miskelley, C. Title Han, J. - COPE: Crop disease detection software
Description Developers: Liangxiu Han and Muhammad Salman Haleem The yields of crop plants are deleteriously affected by various diseases. Effective control measures are dependent on symptom recognition and assessment of severity. Currently, these are achieved by visual observation and estimation when crop walking which leads to inaccuracy and bias as well as being costly and time consuming. In collaboration with our partner organisation who will provide large-scale crop image datasets, this project aims to develop a novel diagnostic software using image processing and machine learning approaches to both identify and measure severity of diseases in wheat crops which will give growers more accurate information on which to base decisions about control strategies.
Type Of Technology Software
Year Produced 2015
Open Source License? Yes
Impact This proposed work is extremely relevant to this call under the Digital Economy theme. Food is of key importance in a sustainable society. Plant diseases are a major foe to global food security, which have the potential to significantly decrease crop yields and increase postharvest losses, especially in the face of climate change. Disease prevention and management are essential for the sustainability of our society. This project aims to develop a software tool to effectively detect crop diseases, reduce yield losses, improve food security and therefore achieve sustainability.

Title Juntti, M. - Urban App
Description This project entailed designing the Urban App - a smartphone application to enable lay data collection about environmental quality. The app was finished in November 2014 and is now available in the App Store (IPhones) and Google Play (Android). it has since been used in the Woodberry Down target area as intended and we are continuing data collection again this summer. We are in the course of analysing the data and writing up an academic paper on the findings: Juntti M. Lundy L. Ecosystem Services and lay experience of urban environmental quality: insights form the Woodberry Down estate in east London, intended for publication in Environmental Science and policy in 2016.
Type Of Technology Webtool/Application
Year Produced 2015
Impact The above paper has been accepted for presentation in the UK-Ireland Planning Research Conference 2015 in London 9-11th of September 2015. Preliminary findings from the app work were also presented in the AAG2015 in Chicago 21-25th of April 2015: AAG Panel 2540 The Ecosystem Approach: A new tool for Urban Development? We have also secured funding to continue working with the app to record experienced environmental quality in Brazil. This is an ESRC-CONFAP co-funded collaboration and research project entitled ADEPT: developing the ecosystem approach to drive positive urban transformations in the context of intersecting vulnerabilities. In terms of impact, the Woodberry Down estate is a hub of regeneration and social housing development and we've had a lot of interest from the local Manor House Development Trust who have been an important gate keeper helping us recruit participants. The app is also being trialled by the Genesis housing association that operates in the area and I have introduced the app and preliminary findings to the board of Woodberry Down Community Organisation, Berkeley Homes and Genesis as well as Hackney Council. While no specific impact has emerged yet, there appears to be interest in our findings and in appropriating the app for different local uses.

Results and Impact Event description:

The digital infrastructure underpinning our society allows us to achieve these goals by various mechanisms including online social networks, trust and reputation, peer-to-peer and content sharing, secure transactions and online voting. Such mechanisms however are at increasing risk from cyber attacks, industrial espionage, online fraud and government surveillance; each serving to undermine trust and security at different levels. This conference offers a unique platform to address the issues of cyber security and trust in the context of sustainable societies. Authors are invited to submit original research papers addressing theoretical foundations, modelling and empirical approaches, along with more exploratory work, and position papers to raise open questions.

Results and Impact Event description:

Our Agri-Food Systems workshop, organised by Sustainable Society Network+ saw over 45 academics, practitioners and representative of public institutions attend with the aim of:

• Developing a research narrative about the use of ICT for the management and coordination across Alternative Agri Food Networks (AAFN) and their scaling up to develop sustainable local agri-food systems.
• Understand different needs of different actors involved in AAFNs and how DTs can support them in scaling up.
• Present best practices for the use of DTs in AAFNs and for their scaling up;
• Discuss current agri-food governance and policies and develop policy recommendations.

Food supply chains are one of the most important areas of investigation in the next decades as people become increasingly concerned with traceability of food supply, costs of food and the environmental impact of large-scale agricultural systems.

Digital technologies have a role to play in the co-ordination of local and "short" supply chains. Within this workshop, we will bring together a variety of researchers and others active in food supply chains in order to explore the use of digital technologies (DTs) in alternative agri-food networks (AAFNs) in their scaling-up process and also in the food supply and distribution system to cities focusing on the "Urban Food Strategies

Over 100 delegates joined us as we explored thought-provoking and challenging questions about how digital technologies are changing the ways we move people and goods around city, town and country.

Our workshop brought together transport sector specialists, industry experts, policy-makers, researchers and the private sector to exchange ideas and discuss five key areas that could be disrupted by advances in digital technology. These are:

• Change driven by the knowledge transfer of ICT solutions between the inter-city and commuter transport sectors.

Results and Impact Event description:

During April - June 2013, Sustainable Society Network+ and NEMODE Network+, led by Dr Catherine Mulligan from Imperial College, ran the "Urban Prototyping", or "UP London" festival.

The technologies we focused on were:

Internet of Things (IoT),
Cloud,
Mobile and
Big Data.
The experiment was run in various forms in order to understand the best approach to engaging citizens and others in the design process. We held both a hackathon and a physical prototyping event, as well as a series of debates and art works designed to expose, elaborate and allow citizens to understand these technologies in the context of the city and the impact they will have on their lives.

It was extremely hard work, but also some of the most fun that we have ever had. Special thanks go to Hackney Council for their efforts and support with the Physical Prototyping Exposition, as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the GSMA for putting up great prizes and awards for this unique event. In addition, sincere thanks go to the RCA, whose talent and passion were evident in many of the art works.

Results and Impact Design is one of the most powerful forces in our lives. None of us can avoid its influence. It's a ubiquitous element of our world that determines how we feel, what we do and whether we succeed or fail. In this new four-part series, the architectural writer Shumi Bose explores its power to affect us, for better and worse.

In each episode of 'The Design Dimension' Shumi charts a different aspect of our relationship to design - desire, damage, choice and, finally, truth.

This week, Shumi examines how we express our identity through design - from the mark we leave on our cities through to the indelible designs we place on our bodies. We hear stories of the tattoo designs of Russian gang members, the memory aids which are being used to help preserve the identity of dementia sufferers and Shumi's own experiences in the the city where she grew up - Calcutta.

Produced by Alan Hall and Hana Walker-Brown
A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4.
