University of Southampton - Equipment Account

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

X-ray diffraction is the main technique by which scientists and engineers study the structures of crystalline materials, however some sample types are often neglected due to the requirement for specialised instrumentation and expertise. This proposal provides advanced equipment to apply diffraction and related methods to a series of lesser-studied sample types of great importance in technology and in understanding environmental processes. These include thin layers of material on surfaces, where information about atomic separations, particle sizes, crystal orientation and changes in the size of the lattice due to interactions with the underlying material can be obtained. This will be critical to the understanding of a range of functional materials with applications in energy conversion and storage, electronics, optoelectronics and engineering. It will also be possible to study very small regions of a material, this is important in examination of single components or regions of a sample where variations are important in understanding properties. Sample types include minerals, where the structure of individual grains will contribute to knowledge of interactions with the environment, and single components of grids of material designed to have specific interactions with light.

Planned Impact

Our strategy is formulated around the specific aim of embedding advanced X-ray scattering experiments into a series of world-leading research projects across several disciplines and academic units at the University of Southampton. This aim will be achieved not just by providing the equipment, but also by educating a broad research community about the types of information that can be obtained from X-ray diffraction and reflectivity and how to perform these experiments and analyse data. The equipment will be managed in the first year of operation in a manner designed to maximise opportunities for a large number of researchers to try out experiments with high level support for data colection and analysis. A series of measures have also been designed to ensure that this impact is sustained, including a network of high level users and incentive systems for groups to maintain expertise.

The key user groups are at the forefront of research in new materials deposition, energy conversion and storage, electronics, optoelectronics, engineering materials, oceanography and environmental science. The main impacts felt outside the University will be in enhanced quality outputs from a large number of research projects in these areas. After the initial year of operation, however, it may also be possible to make some time available for selected users from outside the University of Southampton to use the equipment. This would then similarly impact the work of these academic and/or industrial users.

The project will employ a PDRA for one year in a training capacity - we expect this role to provide a good career development opportunity via interaction with a large number of users, involvement in management of the facility and exposure to a broad range of techniques.

We strongly believe that this proposal will enhance the research quality of many groups and fulfil a critical role in a number of key University and national strategic research themes. In so doing it will provide added value to areas of recent and future investment.

Title Critical Dimension Scanning Electron Microsope (CD SEM)
Description Critical Dimension Scanning Electron Microscope (model S-8840, manufactured by Hitachi High Precision, Ltd.) is used for inspection of the patterned 200mm-diameter wafers processed in the DUV scanenr and the wafer prodcessing station (track). This is a critical inspection tool that assures the quality of the patterning by verifying that the dimensions of the patterned features are, within a certain tolerance, identical to the designed dimensions. This is an standard industrial tool and complements the DUV scanner and wafer processing station (track), allowing industrial-grade DUV photolthographic capability at the University of Southampton.

Impact This is another essential tool that underpins the CORNERSTONE MPW Service. MPW service based on this tool was offered starting from 2017 (call 4). In this call, 14 researches from across 5 UK universities submitted their designs, that will be fabricated by the end of July 2018. Call 5 and Call 6 have already been announced and 6 more fabrication calls (one for active devices and 5 for passive devices) is scheduled to be annouced by the end of 2018. It is expected that photonic devices made in this fabrication runs will demonstrate state-of-the-art characteristis, which will result in publication of a variety of articles in the high-impact factor journals. Most importantly, very few foundries in the world offer such MPW services in photonics and most of these come from professional fabs. In view of that, CORNERSTONE MPW service offered by the University of Southampton, in collaboration with the University of Glasgow and the University of Surrey (Ion Beam Centre), significantly increases the reputation not only of the UK universities involved in CORNERSTONE, but of the UK academia as a whole. Also, due to this fabrication capability, University of Southampton is becoming an increasingly attractive partner for many international academic institutions. In addition to this, this fabrication capability is also starting to attract industrial partners as well.

Title DUV Lithography Scanner
Description Scanner for deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography at 248nm, for patterning 200mm-diameter wafers. Manufacturer: Nikon; Model: NSR-S204B. Scanner is a critical tool in fabrication of photonic and electronic integrated circuits and is used for patterning wafers. The scanner installed at University of Southampton allows patterning of features with the critical dimensions down to 200nm on 200mm (8") diameter semiconductor wafers. Together with the accompanying equipment, the scanner allows fabrication of photonic integrated circuits and due to its high throughput enables running of a Multi-Project Wafer (MPW) service within the CORNERSTONE project that support researches across UK academia. Light source is provided by a KrF laser, emitting at 248nm.

Title Wafer Processing Station - ACT8 Clean Track
Description Clean Track ACT8 (manufacturer: Tokyo Electron) is a wafer processing station used for coating 8" wafers with the photoresist and developing them after the exposure in a DUV scanner. This tool is paired with the DUV scanner and configured to automatically hand over and receive wafers to and from the scanner. It is an industry-grade tool allowing high wafer processing throughput, in combination with the DUV scanner. At the University of Southampton, this tool is equipped with 2 small-volume dispense units, suitable for the smaller production volumes of the CORNERSTONE MPW service, compared to industry where hundreds of wafers are processed per day. This tool allows coating of wafers with a bottom anti-reflective coating (BARC) and a subsequent coating of the photoresist for deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography. After the exposure in the DUV scanner, the wafers are developed and spin-dried in the ACT-8 Clean Track.

Results and Impact The event took place at Airbus Wing Integration Centre (AWIC) and was chaired by the Structures 2025 Chairman Richard Burguete from NPL and supported by Steve Raynes and Paul Richardson from Airbus. The Industrial Advisory Board was given an overview of AWIC and an update on the project and procurement - there was an overview of the actions and outcome of the previous meeting plus 3 minute pitches of ongoing mini demonstrators from PhD students supporting the project. There was an introduction to test specification for demonstrators and a tour of the site.
The highlight of the meeting was a breakout and reporting session on the definition of new large scale demonstrators, which has lead to the detailed design of a demonstrator for the project.

Results and Impact The purpose of the meeting was to update on progress and garner ideas for the project from industry. For that reason we allocated two sessions for partner visions where contributed with a two slide 5 minute presentation of what they thought the project deliver. We were particularly interested in ideas for demonstrator projects, where issues of concern can be shared and cross-sectoral challenges in structural design can be identified.
We also provided an opportunity to visit our new facility, whist still under construction, to give an impression of the scale of activity envisaged in the new National Infrastructure Laboratory and where Structures 2025 will be housed. AGENDA for Structures 2025 kick off meeting:
