Description Please see the key findings reported against grant ref EP/K022377/1.

In addition to the overall project impacts noted with reference to EP/K022377/1, the following specific impacts, all of which are relate to quantification of - and rehabilitation techniques for - fire and earthquake damage to reinforced concrete structural elements, are attributable to the University of Edinburgh portion of the overall project:

- We have undertaken a series of six large scale fire-followed-by-earthquake tests in conjunction with the universities of Aveiro and Porto, Portugal. This work has quantified the seismic performance of fire-damaged concrete column (thus quantifying fire damage in the process), and has demonstrated the effectiveness of both conventional and novel strengthening and rehabilitation schemes for such structural elements. World-first research on novel strengthening systems has been undertaken and the proof-of-concept has been achieved (moves to commercialise the materials and systems are underway).

- We have undertaken a world-first expert elicitation exercise to quantify fire damage to reinforced concrete structures. This has revealed a range of design relevant and useful insights (see publications list).

- We have undertaken world-first large-scale fire tests in a real building (the Tisova fire tests) in the Czech Republic aimed at quantifying fire damage to concrete buildings in real-world travelling fire scenarios (see publications list).

- The linked PhD research by Triantafyllidis (http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29514) has developed and demonstrated the effectiveness of novel fire-safe rehabilitation and strengthening materials, systems and approached for reinforced concrete and structural steel elements.

- The linked PhD research by Baharudin (http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31251) has interrogated the performance of state-of-the-art computational modelling techniques to assess the response (and hence damage) of reinforced concrete slabs flooring systems when subjected to various fire scenarios under a range of structural conditions and using a range or modelling input parameters. Such work is essential in supporting future computational predictive modelling of the response of reinforced concrete structures in real fires.

- The linked PhD research by Maclean (http://hdl.handle.net/1842/35515) has, for the first time, quantified the response (and therefore damage) of reinforced concrete columns subjected to heating and cooling whilst under realistic sustained compressive loading. This work is critical to shift structural designers' mindset from design for fire 'resistance' to design for fire 'resilience'.

- The linked PhD research by Rickard (2019) has developed, demonstrated, and applied a novel fire testing method to assess the propensity of concrete structural elements to explosive, fire-induced cover spalling. This work is again critical to shifting towards a resilience-based structural fire design approach for reinforced concrete elements.

Description Please see the narrative impact reported against grant ref EP/K022377/1. In addition to the overall project impacts noted with reference to EP/K022377/1, the following specific impacts are attributable to the University of Edinburgh portion of the overall project: - We are undertaking ongoing R&D engagement with industry partners on possible commercialisation and international distribution of strengthening and fire protecting materials, systems and methodologies specifically focused on fire-resilient post-earthquake rehabilitation and strengthening of reinforced concrete structural elements. This work is being supported in part by The University of Edinburgh's EPSRC Impact Acceleration account. - Our research outputs continue to influence, both directly and indirectly, revisions to updates to codes and guidance for performance based fire safety engineering and structural design internationally, through Bisby's involvement with code writing committees via the British Standards Institution (BSI), The Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN), The American Concrete Institute (ACI), The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and others.

Results and Impact Towers of Babel is an exciting new play about culpability, collusion, and the risks we take every day. Drawing on research by the University of Edinburgh into why and how the World Trade Centre towers fell on 9/11 this play asks why the significant gaps in our understanding of fire exposed by this terrible event are not being acted upon. Using this specific engineering failure as its focus the play engages with wider questions about the blame culture in our society, the choices made between financial cost and human cost, and how engineers manage and articulate risk to the wider public.
