Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description Swarm behavior of UAVs is now becoming more mainstream as a method of acquiring large volume environmental data sets as a snap-shot rather than a time series. Heterogenous swarms, where platforms operate in different modes, or carry differing sensor payloads, have been tested by PIs at SAMS in the challenging environment of the calving environment of a marine glacier in Svalbard. An autonomous underwater vehicle sampled the marine plume whilst a UAV captured simultaneius and cospacial images of the upwelling currents. As of Feb 2021, SAMS are now in partnership with Argyll and Bute Council to develop the first bespoke research drone test facility in the UK, as part of the Western Scotland Regional Growth Deal. SAMS are seen as key partners with years of experience using airborne robotic technology for marine sciences.

Country United Kingdom
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution The concepts developed under this project were presented at meetings of the "International Society for Atmospheric Research using Remotely-piloted Aircraft" (ISARRA) in Boulder, Co (2017) and Oban, Scotland (2018): see isarra.org for past conference proceedings. A more involved version of multiple-RPA operations is presently being deployed by the CIRES group as part of the polar sea-ice 12month cruise "MOSAiC", although the SAMS component of this work was not funded by UKRI
Collaborator Contribution We are still working closely with the University of Southampton as part of the NEXUSS CDT see: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/nexuss/index.page
Impact The outcomes directly related are the Grand Challenge exersices that are part of NEXUSS, held in Oban each for the 2nd year of each cohort.
Start Year 2016
