Underpinning Power Electronics 2012: Hub

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Faculty of Engineering

Abstract

Power electronics and electrical machines are key components in a low-carbon future, enabling energy-efficient conversion and control solutions for a wide variety of energy and transportation applications. The strength of the UK manufacturing base and its strategic importance to the UK was highlighted in the UK government strategy document "Power Electronics: A Strategy for Success" (UK government Department for Business Innovation and Skills, October 2011). This calls for concerted action across the industrial and academic communities to ensure that the full potential of this growing global market can be realised for the UK economy. Specific recommendations relevant to the UK academic community include: 1) the development of a co-ordinated strategy for postgraduate training; 2) support for research focussing on underpinning the core technology areas whilst ensuring that the national capability in Power Electronics remains internationally leading; 3) establishment of a Virtual Centre linking world-class UK universities with each other and with industry.
A core team including the universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Greenwich, Imperial College, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, Strathclyde and Warwick, has been formed to develop this proposal for a UK Virtual Centre. Our vision is that the Centre will be the UK's internationally recognised provider of world-leading, underpinning power electronics research, combining the UK's best academic talent. It will focus on sustaining and growing power electronics in the UK by delivering transformative and exploitable new technologies, highly skilled people and by providing long-term strategic value to the UK power electronics industry.
Centre activities will be divided into three main strands: research, community and pathways to impact. Our research activities will bring together the leading academic research groups from across the UK to address key research challenges, build critical mass and develop a widely recognised internationally leading research capability. We will develop a UK research strategy for power electronics which will build on foresight activities to inform our research direction. Our community support activities will build capacity through the training of researchers at doctoral and postdoctoral level. We will extend our research funding to the broader community through themed calls for pump priming, strategic support and feasibility projects. In addition we will support and coordinate responses to major initiatives from national and international funding bodies. Pathways to impact will include: 1) the establishment and development of the Centre brand and communication mechanisms, 2) the development and implementation of an exploitation plan which benefits UK industry, 3) support for government policy development and 4) the development of collaborative links with key power electronic research teams around the world.
The Centre programme focuses on fundamental power electronics research at low technology readiness level (TRL) and hence supports a wide range of application areas with a medium to long-term time horizon. Key challenges to be addressed are: increased efficiency, increased power density, increased robustness, lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), higher levels of integration and lower through life cost. The work programme is split into four high-level themes of Devices, Components, Converters and Drives, each of which will address the key challenges, supported by a coordinating Hub. The themes will deliver the majority of the technical output of the Centre.

Planned Impact

The beneficiaries will include the academic and industrial members of the Centre, their host organisations, the broader scientific and industrial power electronic communities, the power electronics skills base and society in general. Many systems can be enhanced through the incorporation of optimised power electronics, with accompanying gains in commercial competitiveness and environmental performance. Key application areas addressed by the Centre and its demonstrators will include power electronics for transport (aerospace, automotive, rail), energy systems (renewables, transmission and distribution) and extreme environments (aerospace, down-well). Other applications that are dependent on power electronics systems will also benefit including areas associated with the digital economy and healthcare.

Timely application of power electronics technology will enable and accelerate the development and adoption of energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly technologies. In the transport sector, gaseous emissions and fossil fuel usage will be reduced, lower noise emissions will result and reliability will be enhanced, yielding direct environmental and economic benefits. In mass rail transport, integrated power electronics will permit weight reduction and yield improved safety and reliability. In the energy sector, major opportunities will be presented for power electronics in power quality control, in the renewable energy system market, in the emerging "smart grid", and in the consumer appliances sector.

UK-based technology and manufacturing capability is currently very strong in the power electronics sector. It is arguably one of the few areas in the electronics industry where the UK is internationally competitive across the whole supply chain (power device die, packaging, power modules, converters and drive systems). In addition, many power electronic systems are application specific, highly customised and tend to have a relatively high added value. They are therefore well suited to a technologically advanced manufacturing base and can absorb the relatively high UK labour costs.

In the short term (3-6 years), the knowledge gained from research activities supported by the Centre will underpin and supplement applications-led activities supported through related research programmes at TRL 4-6. In the longer term (6-15 years) the introduction of dramatically enhanced power electronic technologies will be of direct benefit to across the UK power electronics supply chain, leading directly to wealth creation with job protection and growth. Manufacturers of power electronic modules and systems stand to gain early benefit through expanded material/processing knowledge, an extended capability in high reliability packaging and integration and greater understanding of system interactions. Improved design methodologies, life tests and standards will facilitate the design/product qualification process resulting in shorter time to market. Power electronic system providers will benefit from early access to enhanced integration technologies and design methodology giving them a competitive advantage.

The publicity generated by the project will raise public awareness of the role of power electronics and of engineering in general in society and contribute to future growth in students pursuing careers in science and engineering. Ultimately, the broader benefits to society will include improvements to the quality of life derived directly from the improved efficiency, flexibility and reliability of power electronics and indirectly from a reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

Description Underpinning research supporting power electronics across application sectors including energy, transport, consumer products and industrial drives.
The Centre for Power Electronics was founded in 2013 as part of a direct response to the government's Strategy for Power Electronics. It brought together the very best research groups in a UK-wide, multi-disciplinary, virtual centre. Our core research activities have focussed on fundamental power electronics research at low technology readiness level, delivered by multi-institution collaborative teams. These supported a wide range of application areas, with a medium to long-term time horizon. Our funding calls targeted early career researchers, international exchange visits, and feasibility projects and knowledge exchange, which helped broaden participation in the Centre's activities. Building skills and capacity were at the heart of our activities, with community support activities that included workshops, tutorials, postgraduate training events and an annual conference. In 2019 the Centre supported the development of a successful bid for an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Power Electronics for Sustainable Electric Propulsion. Through our collaborations with industry representatives and engagement in policy decision making processes we have ensured that the views of industry and academia were shared and heard.
