Development of fast pyrolysis based advanced biofuel technologies for biofuels

Abstract

The use of biofuels, as a renewable source of energy has become increasingly important. More in particular, biofuels for transport have the potential to displace a substantial amount of petroleum around the world. The EU is aiming to achieve at least 10% of road fuel derived from plants by 2020. The Carbon Trust selected "Pyrolysis Challenge" as the first strand of Bioenergy Accelerator with £10m investment, highlighting the importance of pyrolysis-oil as the potential replacement for transport fuels with low system GHG (green house gases) emissions. While fast pyrolysis oils have the potential to be processed in existing petroleum refinery infrastructure to transportation fuels, our ability to process the oil requires improved understanding of how to control its chemical composition and improve its physical properties. Current fast-pyrolysis oils are inherently unstable due to their high oxygen content and acidity which leads to polymerisation of reactive components and subsequent viscosity increase via polymer formation which hinders direct refining. Catalytic processes are thus required capable of transforming fast pyrolysis oils such that their acidity and oxygen content is reduced under moderate conditions thereby improving oil stability and allowing direct refining. To minimise energy inputs, it would be desirable to catalytically treat pyrolysis oil vapours immediately after the pyrolyser using a close coupled catalytic reactor to facilitate deoxygenation, chain growth and/or aromatisation of molecules. Such an approach would minimise extra energy inputs but also reduce polymerisation routes into more intractable resins. To achieve these goals we propose to explore non-precious metal de-oxygenation cracking catalysts including doped zeolite materials and bifunctional Fe based catalysts for pre-treatment of pyrolysis oil vapours. By working in the vapour phase we should eliminate some of the problems currently associated with the use of such catalysts in liquid phase processes where leaching by acidic components and char deposition leads to deactivation. The impact of pre-treatment on overall final hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of bio-oil will also be evaluated. These routes to refinery feedstocks will be compared technically and economically.

Description Zeolite based catalysts were tested for direct vapour cracking with significant coke deposition found for fixed bed reactors. Synthetic red mud was produced to establish the influence of components. Circulating fluidised bed reactors for vapour cracking were designed and evaluated with CFD model. The lumped kinetic model for vapour cracking didn't give accurate prediction and more detailed molecular dynamic model needs to be carried out. A bi-functional catalyst was tested for deoxygenation reaction during the decomposition of anisole in a bench-scale fluidised bed reactor within the temperature range from 400 °C to 600 °C. Experimental results revealed that the increase in temperature and metal loading promoted the selectivity of BTX fraction.
A new fast pyrolysis reactor concept has been developed using thermo-plating to greatly reduce the size of reactor and contact surface required.
Direct catalytic cracking of vapour is more effective than bio-oils and more energy efficient.
A complete computational model for fast pyrolysis, liquid collection and catalytic cracking of bio-oils have been developed for the whole biomass to transport fuel process.. CFD model is developed for catalytic upgrading of pyrolysis vapours in a pilot scale FCC riser including hydrodynamics, residence time distribution (RTD) and chemical reactions.
A pilot study of using plastic waste for pyrolysis process is carried out. The plastic bio-oils have better quality than biomass bio-oils but still cannot deliver a reliable performance for diesel engines.
A novel concept to combine pyrolysis with co-processing for transport fuels and utilisation of gas products for fuel cells is developed. A number of industrial partners are involved in a proposal to develop a pilot plant.
A new method for hydrogen free bio-oil hydrodeoxygenation is explored using water as hydrogen supplier. We have developed catalysts able to do the water splitting and hydrooxygenation together. It works highly effectively with noble metals. The next step is to develop low cost catalysts for such hydrogen free HDO.
Exploitation Route A number of industrial partners take good interests in the technology under development. We will work with them to commercialise the research outcomes.

Description The research is making positive impact to the community for biomass fast pyrolysis. We have presented our research plan and results in national and international conferences in particular UK SUPERGEN Bioenergy meetings and EU bioenergy conferences. A new concept of thermo-plating reactor is developed, which has attracted interests from industry. We are exploring the collaborative programmes with industry to further develop such technology to small and large scale demonstration. We are working with a number of companies including start-up to develop valuable products from bio-oils. We have been supporting a waste-to-energy company to improve their pyrolysis technology and test bio-oils in diesel engines for power generation. The technology was demonstrated in UK National Recycling Awards 2014 and won a number of awards. We worked with industrial partners to test the quality of pyrolysis oils with engines. The test results lead to a number of journal publications. We are also exploring joint projects with industrial and academic partners on economic ways for upgrading pyrolysis oils including co-processing at existing petroleum refinery. We also start to look at the integration of the whole process from waste to energy and chemicals using pyrolysis, upgrading and fuel cells technologies to reduce the costs and wastes. A review on hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass has become highly cited article in 2018 with 206 citations sofar. A number of industrial partners already contact us to discuss about the commercial potential of this biomass to liquid technology. This project outcomes are closely related to the Depart of Transport on the Future Fuels for Flight and Freight Competition (F4C) with £20m investment. The PI was involved in the panel for the selection of demonstration projects from biomass to transport fuels where fast pyrolysis is one of the key technologies to deliver. There is a growing interest on carbon negative bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BioCCS) technology. BBSRC has a £25m call on carbon capture technology demonstrators. Biomass thermal conversations have been included in the call. A number of biomass gasification projects are being proposed. We are in discussion with those bids to support their future research work. We are also in discussion with Drax who has the UK largest biomass power plants to integrate hydrogen generation solutions into the power plant to use the spare capacity. A innovate UK bid is being prepared. A Innovate UK proposal was submitted for Innovate UK Energy Catalysis call to develop biomass waste to energy and fuel solutions for Indian residential and industrial applications. Although the bid was not successful, we are working with the industrial partners to move the plan further.

Results and Impact A workshop 2nd Generation Biofuels Technologies" was organized in Kumasi,Ghana, during 5th Sept and 6th Sept 2011 with over 40 participants from different African countries.

The workshop had academics and researchers from Africa, senior officials in Ghana including Ministry of Environment Science and Technology, Energy Commission and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. A number of biofuel manufactures in Africa also presented in the meeting including Jatropha Africa Ltd., Tragrimacs, African Biodiesel Ltd., Kiminic Co, etc. Over 20 presentations were given including research, technology development, policy and industrial prospective.

The Ministry of Environment Science and Technology asked us to organise a senior delegation including the Minster and VC of Ghanaian Universities to the UK to explore collaborations.
