SUPERGEN Energy Storage Hub

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Materials

Abstract

Energy storage is more important today than at any time in human history. It has a vital role to play in storing electricity from renewable sources (wind, wave, solar) and is key to the electrification of transport. However, current energy storage technologies are not fit for purpose. No single energy storage technology can meet the needs of all applications, but many of the research challenges to improve performance and reduce costs are common across electrochemical, mechanical and thermal devices: new materials need to be developed and tested, thermodynamic processes have to be optimized, and lab-based prototypes must be suitable for scale-up. These technologies have to be integrated into robust and cost effective systems. In response to the situation, especially within the UK context, we propose to establish a SUPERGEN Energy Storage Hub. The consortium will bring together investigators with strong international and national reputations in energy storage research and spanning the entire value chain from the energy storage technologies themselves, through manufacturing, integration, and evaluation of the whole system in which the energy storage would be embedded. The consortium will address a number of the critical barriers that face progress towards the commercialisation of energy storage and its widespread exploitation in the UK and elsewhere. Members of the consortium cover areas in which the UK has both the scientific capability and an energy system need. The activities will embrace energy policy, as well as a roadmap and a vision for energy storage research in the UK stretching into the future, thus setting the agenda for UK energy storage. Through extensive networking, including strong engagement with all stakeholders in industry, NGOs and government the hub will not only remain informed and inform others about the latest developments in energy storage it will also bring the energy storage community in the UK as a whole closer together and through wide dissemination engage the public. Through the strength of the Hub and its links will come more effective pathways for the exploitation of new research and new ideas in commercial products.

Planned Impact

The SUPERGEN Energy Storage Hub will work with its industrial partners and the wider community to ensure maximum impact to the beneficiaries of the Hub.
The initial participating companies that have joined the Advisory Board include leading players in key energy storage technologies including batteries (with a predicted market of £60 bn.) and liquid air (with a predicted market of £1 bn.) and in major end user sectors including grid scale storage, transport and consumer goods/built environment. The combination of these companies, and the clear route to market that they provide, with the major energy storage research programmes at the participating universities and the bright and committed researchers and students that will be recruited offers huge potential to create new products, services and, in some cases, markets. These will have a direct and quantifiable positive impact on the economic, environmental and social performance of companies, initially participating and accessing the Hub through the networking activities. This feeds into a positive impact on national performance.
Selected policymakers e.g. DfT have joined the Advisory Board and we have strong links with intermediary organisations (e.g.: IChemE, IET, RSC and the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership) to enable outreach and the HVM Catapult to enable exploitation.
The research undertaken and enabled by the Hub will lead to significant new knowledge in the underpinning science, the technologies and important innovations in systems integration and specific applications. This knowledge will be promulgated to the global academic community, enabling the research to be extended to new national and international collaborations and research programmes, reinforcing the UK's strong standing in this 'great technology'.
Energy storage is a key challenge facing policymakers and legislators, grappling with increasing energy and mobility demand against a national target to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050, a challenge requiring innovation to every sector of energy generation, supply, use and regulation. We will work closely with policymakers and legislators to understand and address this challenge. Accordingly, energy storage is a major issue in society, facing increasing energy costs, worried about energy security and concerned about the environment. The Hub will engage in public understanding activities to inform the public and help them to contribute to the debate. This will include working with local schools and colleges.
Each of the partner universities delivers taught education programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level which will benefit from the incorporation of new collaborative R&D knowledge and the feedback of 'industrial relevance' from organisations exploiting the knowledge.

Description The SUPERGEN Energy Storage Research Consortium comprises 11 academics from 7 different research institutions with complementary expertise in the energy storage field. The consortium covers a wide range of research activities from electrochemical, mechanical to thermal energy storage and spans the entire energy storage value chain through manufacturing, scaling-up, integration and an evaluation of the whole system. Increasing the performance and reducing the cost are challenges across a number of technologies represented in the consortium:
- Understanding of loss mechanisms at the electrode surfaces is essential to increase the performance of novel hydrogen-vanadium flow batteries. Thanks to this study and a better optimization of the electrode design, an increase of two fold in power density was achieved compared to the first generation of commercial vanadium redox flow batteries
- Developing low cost, safe electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries that deliver high and stable capacities and to understand their properties.
- Mill scale combined with a scalable spray technique was used to fabricate supercapacitor electrodes
- A prototype magnetic scroll was made with radial direction of magnetic field distribution
- An economic model was optimised to resolve the conflict from the interaction of energy storage services in energy markets
- Thermal energy storage for efficient peak shaving and wind power utilisation
Exploitation Route The Advisory Board of the Energy Storage Supergen consortium consists of a variety of stakeholders from industry and government that can exploit our findings. The findings from this consortium will have an impact in various research directions.
The development of battery materials and the fundamental understanding of their mechanism are of significance in various industrial applications including transport, electronics and grid energy storage.
The manufacture of low cost supercapacitor electrodes is paramount in the automotive sector for regenerative breaking and might be of use in devices in the future grid.
The optimisation of thermal energy storage devices will increase the penetration of renewable energies into the grid.
The magnetic scroll increasing the efficiency of the compression process could become a useful element in the next generation of compressed air energy storage installations for power savings.
New economic models in energy markets are needed to take into consideration energy storage as services for the grid; utilities, transmission and distribution system operators are very much in need to take into account energy storage and remove regulatory barriers for further exploitation.
Sectors Energy,Environment,Transport

Description Findings have been disseminated within the SUPERGEN consortium to our industrial partners and government bodies in the transport sector and for grid scale applications. The research has informed and produced roadmaps for next-generation energy storage development, and some of the investigators have advised government bodies in this area of energy storage both in the UK and in Brussels. The research outcomes helped establish links between the members of the Supergen consortium and a number of energy and automotive companies for the development of energy storage devices. Some of the findings on the economic model have been used by energy companies for modeling the optimal utilisation of ancillary services incorporating energy storage assets on the electricity grid.

Impact UK industrial strategy has articulated a grand challenge of clean growth: realising our decarbonisation objectives, including electrification of transport sector and maintaining reliable, secure and resilient electricity supplies at minimum cost. A key part of this is delivering an efficient electricity network within a whole electricity system, which maintains high levels of reliability and security of supply in Great Britain at least cost to consumers. In order to unlock benefits, BEIS and Ofgem launched an independent review of electricity system standards. The objective of the review is to consider how the planning and, where appropriate, operational and investment engineering standards should be updated in the face of our changing electricity system, whilst maintaining security of supply to consumers

Results and Impact As the recent VW scandal reminds us, the exhaust from petrol and, in particular, diesel cars are damaging our health. So what can science do to help? Jim Al-Khalili invites three scientists into the studio to explain how their research or technology could help reduce pollution from dirty car exhausts. Professor of Chemistry, Tony Ryan makes the case for smart materials that absorb noxious gases. If only everyone could treat their jeans with nanoparticles that that clean up the air as they walk around town. Professor Clare Grey and her team are working on the next generation of batteries for electric cars. And engineer, Bernard Porter is a champion of hydrogen fuel cells. So, which technology is best designed to help us reduce air pollution in our cities? Who deserves the lion's share of Jim's imaginary pot of research funding to help us tackle this problem?

Results and Impact Gave a talk at the 26th Solvay Conference. The Solvay Conferences ("Conseils Solvay") are prestigious conferences in physics and chemistry that have been running for a century - this conference marked the 100th anniversary of the first Chemistry conference - and have played a key part of the history and development of science.

In terms of organisation, an international scientific committee has << carte blanche >> for defining the general theme of the conferences and selecting the chair person. The conference chair sets up the programme (i.e., decides specific subjects and sessions) as well as the invitations.

One characteristic feature of the Solvay Conferences is the emphasis on discussions over presentations. Typically, Solvay Conferences are divided into half-day sessions. Each session begins with one or two reports reviewing the state-of-the-art of the subject (and distributed to the participants before the start of the Conference), followed by vivid discussions steered by the chair of the session.

Participation to the "Conseils Solvay" is by invitation only. In addition to the guests selected by the chair of the conference, a number of Belgian scientists working in the field of the conference are invited to attend as auditors.
