Description This research project focused on the physics of high field science at the focus of ultra-intense laser focal spots. It included investigation of the onset of new physics phenomena, such as radiation reaction. The results are of fundamental importance for relativistic laser-plasma physics and for the development of laser-driven schemes for particle and radiation sources. To date, the project has resulted in 24 publications in leading international peer-reviewed journals and numerous invited presentations at national and international conferences and workshops. Highlights from this research programme and linked grants at the University of York and Imperial College London include: - Experimental evidence of the high field mechanisms of radiation reaction (the back-action on an accelerated electron from the radiation it emits) in the collision of a high-intensity laser pulse with a laser-accelerated electron beam (Phys. Rev. X); New theoretical and numerical insight into the role of momentum in radiating electrons in strong fields (published in Phys. Rev. D), the influence this has on radiation produced (published in Phys. Plasmas) and the role of quantum effects on radiation reaction in laser-electron-beam collisions (J. Plasma Phys.) has been achieved. The concept of relativistic Doppler-boosted gamma-rays in high fields has also been introduced (Sci. Reports). Related new theoretical results emerging from this project include investigation of ion acceleration and dense electron-positron plasma creation in ultra-high intensity laser-solid interactions (New J. Phys.) and modelling the effects of the radiation reaction force on the interaction of thin foils with ultra-intense laser fields (Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion). These theory results represent significant new understanding of high field physics at the focus of ultra-intense laser pulses. Experimental and numerical investigation of other related phenomena occurring at the focus of ultra-intense laser light has also been achieved, including the physics of relativistic induced transparency (in which an opaque target becomes transparent due to relativistic effects) in ultrathin foils (Nature Communications) and the development of schemes to achieve ultrahigh intensities using plasma optics (Quantum Beam Science) and to generate high order modes of intense light (Sci. Reports). The project also involve contributions to the design of future experiments on QED physics produced by colliding peta-Watt laser pulses (High Power Laser Sci. Eng.).
The key objectives of the project were met. A longer term goal for the work is to investigate the same physics at even higher laser intensities, as facilitated by a new class of laser (multi-petawatt power) which will come online over the next few years. The project included planning for the early experiments using the extreme light infrastructure (ELI) multi-petawatt lasers.
Exploitation Route The outcomes of this work are impacting on the development of laser-driven particle and radiation sources. New understanding of laser energy coupling to fast particle and radiation, generated via this project, will be taken forward primarily by researchers working on these topics. It informs modelling of laser-plasma interactions at ultrahigh intensities and the properties of the particle and radiation beams that can be expected. The findings of this research are influencing the development of high field physics programmes at a number of multi-petawatt laser facilities, including the extreme light infrastructure (ELI).

Description The findings of this award are being used to evaluate the properties of beams of particles and radiation produced at ultrahigh laser intensities. In addition to academic/research applications, laser-driven particle and radiation sources are expected to have wide-ranging applications in sectors such as medicine, industry and energy. These non-academic impacts are longer term (e.g. 5-10 years), and we are continuing to engage in the development of these novel sources and with companies who wish to use them. An immediate societal impact arising from the project is the training of a PhD student and PDRA researcher in experimental, numerical and analytical techniques. The former has since graduated and has been recruited by industry (in a company specialising in laser-based technology) and the latter is developing a research career. In addition, results from the project have featured in public outreach activities.

Title Data for: "Efficient ion acceleration and dense electron-positron plasma creation in ultra-high intensity laser-solid interactions"
Description The radiation pressure of next generation ultra-high intensity ( > 1023 W/cm2 ) lasers could efficiently accelerate ions to GeV energies. However, nonlinear quantum-electrodynamic effects play an important role in the interaction of these laser pulses with matter. Here we show that these effects may lead to the production of an ex- tremely dense (~1024 cm-3) pair-plasma which absorbs the laser pulse consequently reducing the accelerated ion energy and laser to ion conversion efficiency by up to 30-50% & 50-65%, respectively. Thus we identify the regimes of laser-matter interaction, where either ions are efficiently accelerated to high energy or dense pair-plasmas are produced as a guide for future experiments

Title Intra-pulse transition between ion acceleration mechanisms in intense laser-foil interactions
Description "The folder attached are for the paper, 'Intra-pulse transition between ion acceleration mechanisms in intense laser-foil interactions', published in the journal, Physics of Plasma. The folder contains a read me file which gives direction for the data presented in the paper. In the paper we show that multiple ion acceleration mechanism can occurs when an ultrathin foil is irradiated with an intense laser pulse. The data in paper presents measurement of the spatial-intensity distribution of the proton beam and investigates the transition from radiation pressure acceleration to transparency driven processes. By varying the target thickness, the angle of the ring is shown to correlate to the point at which transparency occurs. Data embargoed until 06/12/16."
