A CCP on Wave/Structure Interaction: CCP-WSI

Abstract

The proposal is to establish a new Collaborative Computational Project (CCP) serving the UK re-search community in the area of wave structure interactions (WSI). The new CCP-WSI will bring together computational scientists, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) specialists and experimentalists to develop a UK national numerical wave tank (NWT) facility fully complementary to existing and future UK experimental laboratory facilities for marine, coastal offshore engineering and thus support leading-edge research in an area of high national importance. Substantial progress has been made on a number of past and current EPSRC project grants held by the lead partners in this CCP bid to develop and test the primary elements of a numerical wave tank and to carry out cutting edge wave impact experiments alongside new opensource CFD code development. We believe it is timely to focus the activities of the community on the development of opensource NWT code held within a central code repository (CCPForge). The code will be professionally software engineered and maintainable, tested and validated against measurement data provided by the partner experimentalists, whilst remaining sufficient flexibility to meet the requirements of all members of the WSI community. This model for sharing developments collaboratively within a consortium of partners within a central code repository that is sustainably managed for the future has been developed by the lead partners in related EPSRC funded research projects. The proposed CCP-WSI would extend the framework and methodology for sharing and future proofing EPSRC funded code developments in wave structure interaction to the wider community. This is proposed through a programme of community events and activities which are designed to foster the links between experimentalists and those performing computations, between industry users, academics and the interested public.

Planned Impact

Direct beneficiaries of the NWT and flow solver developments will be companies in the offshore and renewables industries that design fixed and floating structures for survivability in a wide range of wave conditions including extreme waves, including industrial partners in funded CFD projects aligned with the current proposal, and more widely. The CCP-WSI community has a large number of project partners already signed up to the project and thirty of these partners have provided letters of support. The project partners include: UK and international universities, with academic interest in CFD code development and wave structure interaction experiment; industry partners from the offshore engineering, civil engineering and offshore renewable energy sectors.

The project partners have agreed to take part in the CCP-WSI programme of events. These include a thorough programme of training courses and workshops that will provide participants with effective networking activities to allow development and sharing of ideas and processes for validation by laboratory measurements and other available data. Community participants will also be provided with the skills to develop code within the shared opensource environment; to develop new code sustainably (software engineered and quality assured); to validate and present data to accepted standards; to address new code to problems and applications in wave structure interaction. The CCP-WSI focus group and road mapping exercise will provide a framework for innovation and the development of strategic software for WSI applications. This work will be investigated further through pilot projects and industry secondments, four of the community partners from industry have offered to host researcher secondments for this purpose.

Dissemination of the research findings to potential end-users (the academic and industrial CFD research community; the renewable energy and offshore industry) will be achieved through active participation in the CCP-WSI events and through publication in leading refereed international journals and conference proceedings. These will include journals and conferences specialising in high performance computing as well as mainstream fluid mechanics journals. Dissemination and pro-motion of the CCP-WSI locally to the wider community will be achieved through school workshops and public events. A project web site and Wiki will be set up to facilitate the discussion of topics related to WSI research and to publish reports, open source codes and information on workshop events for further code developments as well as for sharing and dissemination of research outcomes.

Description Since being established in 2015, the existing CCP-WSI has provided strategic leadership for the WSI community, and has been successful in generating impact in three key areas:
Strategy setting: The existing CCP-WSI network is an international group of over 115 researchers, spanning academia and industry in 5 continents. It identified challenges and priorities and has co-created a roadmap for WSI code development through industry focus group workshops with 75 attendees.
Contributions to knowledge: The existing CCP-WSI has advanced understanding of the applicability and reliability of WSI through an internationally recognised Blind Test series involving 50 participants. The Blind Test activities have been presented in dedicated sessions at 3 international conferences with 25 papers published in 3 special issue journals. Over 80 journal publications and presentations at over 20 national and international conferences have been generated from the CCP-WSI team and pilot projects with industry, outreach activities with school children and public audiences have also been delivered.
Strategic software development and support: Training has been provided to the community with 76 attendees, including training in software engineering, specific code development, code repository use and a week-long Hackathon for intense collaborative code development. The existing CCP-WSI Code Repository and clearing house provides a platform for co-creation and sharing of open source WSI code for community use, and is maintained in Github with 45 users and 300 commits. The Data repository also supports a growing database of benchmark test cases for community use and contributions
Exploitation Route Use of the CCP-WSI code Repository and training events, Hackathons. Participation in blind tests; use of new code developed in repository, use of benchmark tests and datasets. The training and workshops have led to code developers, both academic and businesses in improving the capability and efficiency of their code and its utilisation. This has saved costs and enabled new complex simulations to be tackled.

Description A road mapping exercise has been carried out for the status of computational methods for wave structure interaction applications and a priority list of new challenges and developments needed has been developed. 1. A report has been produced, and made available online based on the discussions had at the first CCP-WSI Focus Group Workshop. As a result, a priority list of activities has been developed to inform future focus group events and WSI road-mapping exercises (https://www.ccp-wsi.ac.uk/sites/www.ccp-wsi.ac.uk/files/CCP-WSIFocusGroupWS1_Report.pdf). 2. Three Blind Test series have been developed and published and the wider community have been invited to take part in the tests. the first is for simulation of an offshore engineering application and the second series is for a wave energy related application. The wave energy blind test was launched during a Workshop hosted during the European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (EWTEC) in Cork in September 2017 and will be reported at the EWTEC 2019 and the offshore engineering blind test was launched in October 2017 and will be reported during the International Symposium for Offshore and Polar Engineering (ISOPE) in Japan in June 2018 and then in Hawaii in 2019, with CCP-WSI now established as a regular feature of ISOPE conferences with sessions included in 2020 and 2021. Both blind tests have generated interest from both academic and industry participants. 3. The CCP-WSI has set up a Special Interest Group in Wave Structure Interaction as part of the UK Fluids Network and held a workshop in 25th October 2017 with 26 attendees from both academia and industry present. The combined CCP-WSI and SIG-WSI mailing list now has 140 members. 4. The CCP-WSI also contributed to the national Headstart program on 3rd July 2017 providing an opportunity for A-Level students to experience how we meet the challenges of providing infrastructure for society through civil and coastal engineering. In this reporting period, the CCP-WSI website has received 2263 page views (1565 unique) from 361 unique users over 606 sessions The combined CCP-WSI and SIG-WSI mailing list has 106 members. The CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 3 was held at the ISOPE2019 conference, Honolulu, Hawaii, with 2 sessions chaired by CCP-WSI partners and 8 contributions to the conference technical program. The main report, along papers generated by individual participants, are now in review for publication in the International Journal of Offshore and Polar Engineering (IJOPE). Following the success of the CCP-WSI Blind Tests Series 1 & 3, CCP-WSI is listed as one of the main themes in the ISOPE 2020 call for papers. The CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 2 was held at EWTEC2019, Naples, Italy, with a dedicated CCP-WSI track, 2 sessions chaired by CCP-WSI partners, 8 contributions to the conference technical program and a dedicated side event - CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 2: Showcase Event attended by ~25 delegates. The Blind Test contributions and comparative paper for each of the three tests are published in special issues of the IJOPE 2018, 2019 and as a two part special issue of the Institution of Civil Engineers Proceedings of the Engineering and Computational Mechanics Journal, 2020, 2021. The 1st CCP-WSI Hackathon (incl. a CCP-WSI Training event - Introduction to CCP-WSI Code Developments) took place in collaboration with Queen's University Belfast and supported by the UK Fluids Network. The event was attended by 16 international early career researchers (selected via competitive application) and had invited contributions from 3 world-leading experts. Title CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 1 
Description he CCP-WSI Blind Test Workshops have been devised to provide a better understanding of this issue and inform future development of numerical modelling standards. Within these Workshops, numerical modellers within the wave structure interaction (WSI) community will be invited to use their numerical codes to simulate a series of specific WSI problems covering the full range of relevant complexities. The details of each case will be introduced at an Introductory Event providing an opportunity for attendees to discuss the proposed test cases, refine them and register an expression of interest in participating. Following this there will be a Release Event in which all of the required information to reproduce a set of bespoke physical experiments will be published. The key outputs of the experiments will not be divulged until after the community have submitted their numerical results. A Showcase Event will then follow in which the results from the test and present recommendations will be shared with the community. The CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 1 Test Case is entitled: Focused wave impact with a fixed FPSO. In these test cases a fixed scale-model FPSO (M3) is subjected to 6 irregular (focused) wave events with a range of steepness, kA (0.13 - 0.21) and a range of incident wave angles (a = 0, 10 & 20°). The purpose of these experiments is to assess factors, such as wave steepness and direction, effecting the forces and run-up on FPSO hulls due to extreme wave events. The structure (M3) has vertical sides and each end is semi-circular with the same radius (0.15m). The full height of the structure is 0.303m and the draft is 0.153m. The test cases are split into two parts: Part 1 - considers waves of increasing steepness but constant (0°) angle of incidence Part 2 - considers waves with increasing angle of incident but constant steepness In each experiment, measurements of the pressure on the hull were recorded by an array of pressure transducers. The run-up at various positions on the hull surface and the free-surface elevation in the vicinity of the structures were recorded by an array of resistive wave gauges.

Results and Impact The CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 2 was introduced in a side event of the 12th European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (EWTEC), in Cork, Ireland, with 21 international delegates contributing to the Series 2 test plan and expressing an interesting in participation. The CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 2 Experimental Test campaign will take place in Plymouth University's COAST Lab Ocean Basin on 11-15 December 2017 and the data will be release in April 2018. The results of the CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 2 will be presented during a special session at EWTEC 2019.

Results and Impact The FROTH Final Workshop was held in Oxford University in November 2015 at the end of the project. The Workshop was held as part of a SUTGEF (Society for Underwater Technology) meeting and had an audience of academics and industrialists from the offshore and ocean energy sector. The workshop presented the results of the FROTH collaborative project; the experiments and numerical model developments were presented together, and the main findings of the research and its implications for industry were discussed.

The newly funded follow on projects, EP/N008847 and EP/M022382, were presented and the audience invited to take part in these projects.

Results and Impact The CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 1 has been completed (in conjunction with the ISOPE 2018 conference in collaboration with the International Hydrodynamics Committee (IHC)) and consisted of 3 special sessions, and 11 presentations from a group of 13 international academic and industrial participants. Dr Shiqiang Yan won the 'Session Organizer Award (CNOOC-CSL Prize)' for initiating the CCP-WSI Sessions. The final report, and a selection of submissions, are being prepared for publication in the IJOPE. The test data for the CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 2 (being held in conjunction with the EWTEC 2019) has now been released. After the success of the CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 1, a third Blind Test will now take place in conjunction with the ISOPE2019 conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The test data for the CCP-WSI Blind Test Series 3 has also been released.

Results and Impact Over 80 delegates attended the 6th PRIMaRE Conference held at Cardiff University, Cardiff on the 3rd and 4th July 2019. Based on peer-reviewed abstracts, 25 presentations and 20 posters were presented by participants from 13 institutions over 5 plenary sessions. Furthermore, there were seven presentations from invited speakers (listed below) and a panel debate featuring a range of leading figures from the marine renewables sector. The conference also attracted international participation from the University of Western Australia, and Uppsala University (Sweden).

The event provided an excellent forum to foster collaboration between industry and academia, which is essential to ensure that the marine energy sector can achieve its full commercial potential, maximising job creation and export opportunities, whilst allowing the UK to remain a global leader in the associated engineering and policy expertise.

Results and Impact The 3 day annual assembly was run at the University of Strathclyde (Supergen ORE Hub partner) comprising of Day 1 - Early Career Researcher Forum, 45 delegates with workshop training, invited speakers and a poster competition. Also a research alignment group meeting and workshop on research priorities. Day 2 - Main Assembly Day with 250 delegates and a series of presentations on Supergen ORE Hub core research, Flexible Fund research and wider research initiatives. Day 3 - A Co-directors and Advisory Board meeting. The Assembly generated a number of new connections to the Supergen ORE Hub network and increased attendance and engagement at subsequent Supergen ORE Hub events
