SPECIFIC IKC Phase 2

Lead Research Organisation: Swansea University
Department Name: College of Engineering

Abstract

The UK faces a challenge of providing an energy system that is secure, sustainable and affordable. The cost of upgrading the power infrastructure is estimated to be £200bn using a centralised energy generation model. We believe that the Buildings as Power Stations concept can create a whole new manufacturing and business opportunity and dramatically reduce the investment required to create a secure future for the next generation. Even reducing the power infrastructure investment by 10% represents a £20bn UK opportunity which is mirrored across the developed world.

So far on our journey we have had substantial impact and SPECIFIC is a key component to ensure commercialisation of these disruptive technologies principally though leadership of demonstration of new technology in the built environment. Research leadership and excellence is backed up by the publishing of 149 papers, international invited conference presentations and an expanding portfolio of 29 patents. A network of over 52 early adopter industrial partners, spanning both large corporates through to a selection of fast moving and innovative SMEs has also been grown. Where no company or market yet exists we have elected to spin two companies out. Alongside this, world class facilities have been created for large scale research and demonstration of product manufacture, including three pilot lines co-located with world class scientific research instrumentation. The opening of the Solcer Demonstration house in July this year is a key milestone; with colleagues at the Welsh School of Architecture (Cardiff) and the construction supply chain, this 'Active House' uses EXISTING technology harnessed in a unique way to generate up to twice as much energy as it uses. Combining solar electric and thermal generation and storage systems the house is globally unique and with a construction cost of under £150k it is affordable.

The journey into the next decade brings both challenge and opportunity. We intend to build on the success of the first four years and to deliver critical new technologies to market, including printed photovoltaics at half the current commercial Si cost, safer building scale aqueous batteries delivering the opportunity to time shift renewable generation to demand, and solar thermal integrated storage solutions which create Active Buildings that do not require gas heating. Each of these sectors alone represent a billion pound opportunity and together they create a compelling case for a paradigm shift in our energy matrix from centralised generation and grid distribution to a model of distributed energy generation.

This is disruptive technology so accurate market assessment is challenging. However, considering domestic new build in isolation, with 145,000 new UK homes built in 2014 and assuming an average £125k construction cost (proved through the Solcer House project) this translates to a >£1.8bn annual domestic new build opportunity if only 10% of new homes use the Buildings as Powerstations concept. Given it is affordable, environmentally friendly and offers building owners an additional income stream this projection is conservative. The opportunity in retrofit is even larger as is that in commercial and industrial buildings. The associated manufacturing opportunity will create 5000 jobs in the construction supply chain and give the UK, centred in Wales, a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' to lead the world using technology invented, developed, proven and manufactured here. Wales and the UK can be a beacon of leadership for developed and developing nations alike in a new industrial revolution.

Planned Impact

We believe that the SPECIFIC IKC can deliver a new Buildings as Powerstations (BAPS) industry within the next phase of the project. This has been recently re-inforced by the completion of the first BAPS demonstrator (the SOLCER House produced with Cardiff University with support from Tata, Pilkington BASF and the construction supply chain). This demonstrator is not only affordable NOW but generates twice the energy it uses in a year. This powerful example will become even more attractive as new low cost energy generation and storage technologies are developed both at the IKC and elsewhere. SPECIFIC 2 supported by an additional >£10m investment from WG and support of over £6m from industry will lead demonstration projects for domestic, commercial and industrial both new and retrofit.

Title Indigo: Collections, Conservation, Chemistry - Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea City Council
Description The collaborative project saw researchers use science to unlock the secrets of art history. Swansea University teamed up with the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery to discover more about a portrait of a lady in the gallery collection. The team analysed and observed small samples recovered during the restoration of the oil canvas. The artist had used a blue pigment in the portrait which proved the key to finding out more. The team identified Indigo as the blue pigment used in the painting through the deployment of a series of analytical techniques. This helped them gain a better understanding of when the portrait was painted. This is due to the fact that it's known when Indigo blue was used throughout art history. Following on, scientists were able to work with conservators to uncover the identity of the mystery artist. Visitors can participate in the interactive exhibit, view the portrait, examine cross-sections of paint samples with an optical microscope, and explore the forensic fine arts investigation. This exhibition is a partnership with Swansea Council's Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and Swansea University. Funded by a grant from The Royal Society of Chemistry Outreach Fund, with support from Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea Council, SPECIFIC, Beacon, Swansea University, with support from Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and European Regional Development Fund.
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition

Description Since its' inception in 2011, SPECIFIC has led a transition to zero emission, renewably powered transport, energy and heating solutions, beginning with the integration of renewables into buildings and then expanding into energy storage, local grid balancing and integration of EVs.
Specifically in 2021/2 a world leading scale-up activity for new perovskite PV technology has been delivered with panels on test in the UK, India and soon Mexico. Applicable to both conducting glass, plastic and metals the technology is really exciting and has attracted global attention from Tata Group with a demonstration at the 2022 Founders Day celebration.
The building demonstrator programme was devised to show full-scale demonstration of generation, storage and release of renewable energy for use in the building and in powering EVs. SPECIFIC's Active Classroom (2016) and Active Office (2018) buildings on the Swansea University Bay Campus also act as a platform for industrial partners to confidently trial their novel renewable technologies alongside existing and as part of the overall building system. Clearly it has also enabled the various SPECIFIC research teams to safely test and evolve their research by deployment on the buildings.
By using integrated new technologies on the buildings our technical teams have been able to monitor and report on the performance of the whole building.
Although small individual buildings, the Active Classroom and Active Office not only power themselves for most of the year but can provide enough spare electricity to power an EV for 26,000 miles which presents an exciting scalable option for very large buildings and how the Active Building approach can be applied in an energy-resilient solar-powered community. During 2021 the second development of social housing proof of concepts were designed and delivered in partnership with Coastal and Daiwa House Europe. Built on site within 6 days this is a massive step forward in terms of speed and quality as well as demonstrating a novel radiant heating system,
The SHED (Solar Heat Energy Demonstrator) in Margam is used to showcase multiple solar heat storage and collection demonstrators. It is a 1990s industrial unit that has been retrofitted with solar technology and has been run without gas since 2012, which is a 2030 Government imperative. It is home to the SPECIFIC® team working on revolutionary heat storage technologies including inter-seasonal. The solar heating, using a transpired solar collector which makes up the whole wall and has been retrofitted over existing cladding, is an ideal method of turning existing walls into heating resources in an additional way to support net-zero power to the use of solar PV on roofing. This has been supplemented in 2020 by a range of emerging thermal generation collectors, showcasing the choice and performance now available to consumers.
SPECIFIC is also collaborating with multiple university and industry partners, local authorities and regional development groups actively participating in the regional drive for net-zero living through wider UKRI initiatives such as the IDRIC programme and is looking to extend the global reach of research through a net zero network with India based on the successful partnership with SUNRISE.
Exploitation Route COP26 was an excellent opportunity for SPECIFIC to promote the renewable energies technologies and Active Buildings. Other parts of this document highlight the specific engagement activities undertaken by various members of the team to promote SPECIFIC, in particular, the Active Buildings and related technologies were featured twice via the BBC in 2021, both with international audience reach. As a result, interest and requests for information from the general public and businesses have increased greatly. To illustrate new collaborations with a major international housing manufacturer and Tata Steel supported by SPECIFIC based on a practical demonstration semi-detached house produced in late 2021 will be replicable in a variety of locations from the end of 2022.
SPECIFIC's SHED building demonstrator was chosen as the venue for the Welsh Government's (WG) launch of their Net Zero Strategy Plan. This was the preferred venue as they wanted the event to be housed in a novel low-carbon demonstrator promoting new renewable technologies. This signifies longer term support for the work from the WG.
SPECIFIC is also pioneering the application of Active Building technology around the world having completed a solar powered building in India (March 2022) and is working with Mexican textile screen printers to produce solar modules on flexible materials. In South Africa, through SPECIFIC, photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies are being used to dewater sludge at a treatment plant. Solar powered 'Active' classrooms are also being created in Zambia. The team have also supplied demo perovskite PV to Tata in India for 2022 Founders Day (March) which we expect to release support for further scale-up work.
SPECIFIC are supporting a wider shaping of de-carbonisation activity in Wales working with pan-Wales partners to develop a Net Zero Wales (N0W) plan and a new innovation facility (SWITCH) to focus on regional industrial just transition to net zero. The facility and teams will be housed within a £20M exemplar for large factory style Active Buildings.
Since the PV work is reaching a higher TRL at this point the teams are also looking at extending the capability of our printing and coating lines to deliver novel applications for hydrogen generation and fuel cell technology. This is combined with novel approaches to solar fuels direct production from sunlight and atmospheric carbon.

Title A Multi-Criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology for high temperature thermochemical storage material selection using graph theory and matrix approach, Materials & Design, Volume 227, 2023,
Description Highlights • The application of a MCDM methodology based on Graph Theory and Matrix approach leads to selection of Cao/Ca(OH)2 for high temperature thermochemical storage. • Target based, universal and user-friendly MATLAB program based on MCDM methodology allows the simple selection of candidate materials. • The MCDM tool is tested against a real-life situation, namely the capture of waste heat from Tata Steel UK Port Talbot steelworks. • Practicality of proposed MCDM method is validated with selection of a suitable heat storage material for low-medium temperature application. • Proposed method can be applied to other scenarios such as heat storage from high and low temperature coupled with solar thermal generators.

Title Dataset for ''Screen printed carbon CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells with high open-circuit photovoltage''
Description All the data collected and presented in the publication ''Screen printed carbon CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells with high open-circuit photovoltage'' have been grouped in this Dataset. Carbon based CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells have been investigated. In this work, we focus on the effect of the post-annealing temperature on the perovskite material properties and photovoltaic activity. The material properties have been investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis, atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The photovoltaic activity of the devices is tested by scanning the JV curve under simulated solar illumination (AM 1.5G filter, 100 mWcm-2) and measuring the EQE. Information about the internal resistance of the device has been taken measuring Impedance spectroscopy. A readme.txt file that describes how the data have been arranged is available.

PI Contribution Research and identify the best technology solutions regarding PV, battery storage, EV charging, data collection/monitoring and a building management system to achieve 'activation' of the building Evaluation of the building performance data after installation
Collaborator Contribution Create the tender documents / Tender specifications to potential contractors Select contractors Project Manage the retrofit
Impact Two new to firm processes from the Y Twyni Active Retrofit Project. The first of these is the development of the technical specification/solution for a retrofitted, integrated energy system for the generation, storage and release of electricity for the operation of the educational facilities building. Included in this was a new process of collecting and monitoring the building's data, and the energy management of the building. The combination of these new processes has been called 'Active Retrofit for Education Buildings'. The second new process for the Active Building Centre was the development of a procurement process specifically for 'Active Retrofit for Educational Buildings' projects. This process factored in the mandatory elements of public procurement within the construction sector and combined them with the need to be able to evaluate novel, complex and new to market technical specifications. At the time of development, the Active Retrofit for Education Buildings process was also new to market. Prior to this, only 'new build' educational buildings had been developed with integrated energy systems for the generation, storage and release of electrical energy, combined with a building management, data monitoring and collection system. The Active Building Centre has identified the educational sector as one of its key customers and plans to use the learning and process development from Y Twyni Active Retrofit project as part of its value proposition and marketing when targeting this market. Job creation of an additional 9.5 FTE positions

Impact Generation of new products / processes to the company SPECIFIC have supported Coleg Sir Gar to develop a new internal process of milk parlour cleaning at the Dairy Development Farm by analysing grid substitution options. The aim of the project was to evaluate the requirements of an active dairy farm and assess how renewable technologies can offset the majority, if not the entirety of the energy required to heat a significant hot water store. The end product, milk, was being produced in estimated volumes of 5000 litres/day and delivered at a temperature of 37°C. It was required to be chilled to and maintained at 4°C whilst awaiting tanker pickup. This provision was from three refrigeration tanks and an ice maker which runs on an Economy 7 tariff. The three refrigeration tanks dumped the hot side to air using conventional plate type heat exchangers. The system recommended included thermodynamic panels that effectively captured and channelled the ambient temperature from the milking parlour and heated the hot water to 60°C. Considerable energy was available from the ambient temperature in the milking parlour. The herd management enable the thermodynamic panels to capitalise on the containment of the herd during the colder ambient air months, therefore increasing the system efficiencies higher than those expected by ambient air temperature alone. SPECIFIC worked with Coleg Sir Gar to produce this bespoke recommendation and a report of a preferred new grid substitution option for delivering hot water for milking operations, which can be replicated at other sites, cost effectiveness, payback and efficiency against their requirements monitored. Company Name ARMADILLO METAL COATINGS LTD
Description Armadillo Metal Coatings Ltd is a new company set up as a result of ERDF supported activity. The door furnishing market is forecast to generate around £500 million in revenues in 2020, with demand for copper and brasses growing. This trend should accelerate due to COVID-19, as surfaces that can prevent the transmission of viruses and microbes become more sought after in hospitals, public areas and offices. Armadillo Metal Coatings Ltd have developed an electroplating additive that adds value to the metal coating by enhancing resistance to corrosion and tarnish.
Year Established 2019
Impact Development of a new additive, that when added to a plating process forms regular and welldispersed deposits within the metal matrix, protecting the entire surface, is both new-to-company and new-to-market. The novel product detects early-stage corrosion and responds by releasing an on-demand inhibitor. Armadillo's new technology keeps decorative metal shining for over five times longer, and relieves the maintenance burden experienced by the end user. When applied to copper, excellent microbe / virus resistance is achieved with vastly reduced maintenance, particularly beneficial given the current Coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, the company now supports three full-time employees.

Company Name ACTIVE BUILDING CENTRE LTD
Description The Active Building concept was conceived by the SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre, at the University of Swansea. Their work led to the design and build of two demonstration buildings (the Active Classroom, in 2017 and the Active Office in 2018) to test and prove a range of energy and digital technologies, as well as show how these technologies can be connected in one integrated system, working together to generate heat and power for the building, and where appropriate for associate vehicles and the local grid. The success of the early Active Building demonstrators gave rise to the Active Building Centre, through funding by the UK government as part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and UKRI. That support, including £36m of funding, was provided to develop a national centre of excellence working with supply chains in the energy and construction sectors; in turn supported a parallel Active Building Research Programme involving ten universities: Swansea, Bath, Newcastle, Birmingham, Loughborough, UCL, Sheffield, Cardiff, Imperial College London and Nottingham. Objectives for the ABC include assisting WG in delivering a fairer, more equal and sustainable future; enabling Prosperity for All to deliver a low carbon Wales, through transformed energy and construction sectors in Wales, and across the UK. The Active Building Centre works with national and local government, developers, energy distributors and homeowners, advising on how to most effectively deploy new technologies and innovative energy system solutions into new buildings or retrofit them into existing stock to optimise energy efficiency.
Year Established 2019
Impact The company has built six demonstrator buildings to date, three of which are based at their Berkeley research centre, and a further three projects: 1. The Trent Basin housing development in Nottingham - a pioneering community 'energy bubble'. Through Project SCENe it has become an exemplar in its approach to integrated renewables - community owned solar PV, battery storage and enabling infrastructure were installed at the construction stage, keeping the capital costs low. 2. ABC is supporting Carmarthenshire County Council and the Welsh Government in the delivery of a new low-carbon office and industrial development at Cross Hands, Carmarthenshire. The project is seeking to deliver highly energy-efficient, potentially net-zero-carbon buildings that are innovative in their use of renewable energy sources, adhere to 'Fabric First' principles to maximise material performance and qualify for a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating, signifying best practice in sustainability standards. 3. ABC is funding and partnering with Swansea University and the SPECIFIC Innovation and Knowledge Centre on the retrofit of Y Twyni, the two-storey modular lecture theatre facility on Swansea University's Bay Campus. The active upgrade involves the installation of rooftop photovoltaic solar panels, battery storage and rapid EV chargers. The company now employs 30+ full-time members of staff across a wide range of roles and continues to seek further funding to support the government and the construction industry adopt renewable technologies to achieve net-zero.

Company Name KUBAL-WRAITH LIMITED
Description The spin-out, Kubal-Wraith Ltd, company was founded on 29 January 2018 by Swansea University and the inventors of the key intellectual property. The technology to be commercialised will enable continuous measurement of chemical composition and temperature of molten metals during production. This is achieved using a laser beam projected into the melt through a refractory gas-swept channel (tuyère) in the furnace wall. It will adapt and combine recent advances in refractory manufacturing and laser metrology, exploiting gas injection techniques to protect the data channel.
Year Established 2018
Impact in 2017 the team won a Royal Society Translation award to support the initial technology transfer of the technology from the university to an investment ready proposition. Following this, in June 2018 the now formed company and management team from Swansea University won the Armourers & Brasiers 2018 Materials Science Venture Prize - making Swansea University the first institution to win the prize twice. The lead inventor has since secured a Royal Society Short Industry Fellowship associated with the technology transfer of the innovation.

Results and Impact Context / Background: Climate change is one of the biggest global challenges threatening Wales' prosperity because it will have an impact on all of our lives. Wales is required by law to reduce its carbon emissions by at least 80% in 2050. This requires a step change to how we live and work and is not a standalone policy area. The global decarbonisation trajectory has been set, creating clarity and certainty to drive investment. This creates enormous economic opportunity for Wales. Everyone needs to act and accelerate a shift to Low Carbon Buildings and Transportation.
