VSimulators: Human factors simulation for motion and serviceability in the built environment

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bath
Department Name: Architecture and Civil Engineering

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description We have developed and constructed a new specialist piece of equipment which allows us to explore how humans respond to different environmental stimuli in buildings such as sway motion (felt in tall buildings), sound, visual cues, temperature, humidity, air quality, etc. Our preliminary tests have revealed the interaction between various influencing factors and we have developed various novel test protocols (objective psychological and physiological test measurements coupled with subjective questionnaires) to establish the affect on test subject comfort, well being and productivity.
Exploitation Route The resulting equipment and test protocols has been demonstrated to provide output that can be used to show how people are affected by various environmental stimuli. It will will be used as the basis for future research proposals making profound use of the test facility to understand how humans are affected by factors such as motion, environment and virtual reality. As an example, VSimulators has formed key part of a network proposal looking at how virtual reality can be used in healthcare to improve recovery of patients.

Results and Impact VSimulator roadmapping workshop: Putting People at the Centre of Built Environment Design, For Better Living and Working, with the aim of collaboratively mapping the future demands from buildings and structure, by placing human occupants at the centre of the design process. We have identified additional key sectors where we need to actively engage for future research conversations, such as End Users, Planners, Well Being professionals, Sustainability representatives, lawyers, insurance providers, NHS representative and patients, data science experts and education providers, drawing on their experiences in exploring building design from a more holistic approach.
