Description The Henry Royce Institute was established to develop and capitalise on the UK's world-leading excellence in advanced materials research. Through investment in infrastructure at key locations across the UK, the Royce now provides access to a wide range of state-of-the art facilities through a single front door. This joined-up system enables the greatest accessibility for our users who span academia, research technology organisations and industry. We have implemented efficient access models that ensure a range of activities can be effectively supported - from simple contract work on a single piece of kit through to complex projects conducted on facilities located across a number of sites.
Our multidisciplinary capabilities draw on the world-leading expertise from across the Royce Partners and includes both new equipment funded through the original investment, and existing equipment that was incorporated into Royce by Partners and has been enhanced or extended through the Royce funding. Together this equipment when fully commissioned and operational will represent >£200m of state-of-the-art, open-access research facilities, of which >200 major pieces of kit or suites have already been established as user facilities.

The Royce maintains an online catalogue of our facilities portfolio which is simple for users to explore through searching or filtering by equipment or technique type, research area or category of application and location. All facilities have been TRAC-listed with, (i) FEC charge-out rates available to HEIs users for inclusion on research grants as direct costs, and (ii) commercial rates for industrial users.

Over the past 18 months, the facilities have already delivered 34,350 hours of external usage for >130 unique industry users and >60 unique users from HEIs or related organisations. In addition, over 140,000 hours of usage have been provided to internal PhD students. These figures have been achieved in advance of the completion of four of the major build projects and with £31m of new equipment yet to be commissioned.

At Manchester specifically, the Royce investment has created facilities that enable a diverse range of research from biomedical materials to materials systems for demanding environments. For example, the investment has provided funding for: Joining & Cladding Facility; Additive Manufacturing & Printing Facility; Biomedical Imaging Suite; Biomechanical Analysis & Testing Facility; Automated Rapid Discovery Robotics Platform; Physical Properties & Chromatography Suite; High Performance Testing Facility; Coatings Cluster; Gamma Irradiator; Ion Accelerator System.

The P-NAME tool was commissioned in December 2019 and is now undergoing capability development trials. A number of advanced materials research areas have been identified as suitable for application using the tool and form the basis of a proposed national activity embedded within the Henry Royce Institute's Atoms to Device (A2D) Theme called 'Nanoscale Advanced Materials Engineering (NAME)'. At £10M FEC Programme Grant has been submitted with ~£2.22M of partner support to deliver NAME.

Title Dataset: Using HAXPES to quantify depth profiles through coatings using glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (pulsed RF GD-OES)
Description Chemical characterization at buried interfaces is a real challenge, as the physico-chemical processes operating at the interface govern the properties of many systems and devices. We have developed a methodology based on the combined use of pulsed RF GD-OES (pulsed Radio Frequency Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry) and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) to facilitate the access to deeply buried locations (taking advantage of the high profiling rate of the GD-OES) and perform an accurate chemical diagnosis using XPS directly inside the GD crater. The reliability of the chemical information is, however, influenced by a perturbed layer present at the surface of the crater, hindering traditional XPS examination, due to a relatively short sampling depth. Sampling below the perturbed layer may, however, can be achieved using a higher energy excitation source with an increased sampling depth, and is enabled here by a new laboratory-based HAXPES (Hard X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy) (Ga-Ka, 9.25 keV). Here we attach our dataset of these measurements (Format: Origin 8.5).

Description Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme - Provision of academic access to Royce facilities at NNL
Organisation Government of the UK
Department Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Country United Kingdom
Sector Public
PI Contribution Through Advanced Fuel Cycle Programme (AFCP) backing, Royce Partner the UK National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) has taken academic access to the next level. In successfully trialling a new approach while overcoming COVID-19 challenges, NNL has secured opportunities for next-generation nuclear experts to tap into the UK's top infrastructure and complete meaningful clean energy research. Following the AFCP's first user access call last summer, the programme has selected six projects to begin work on the scheme. The call offers the winning academics access to grant-funded equipment at the UK National Nuclear Laboratory's (NNL) world-class facilities, with all costs met by NNL and its funding partners, including the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The equipment, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), Royce and National Nuclear User Facility (NNUF), will enable academics to complete strategically important research aligned with AFCP.
Collaborator Contribution In successfully navigating and implementing this scheme - especially against the ongoing challenges of COVID-19 - NNL has pioneered a proactive, adaptive approach to user access that will inspire the lab's future collaborative efforts. As a national laboratory, NNL strives to deliver world-leading science that addresses global challenges, from climate change through to nuclear medicine. Collaborating with university partners - and providing opportunities for them to benefit from NNL's unique facilities and equipment - is essential to this aim. For the past five years, the NNL user access team has arranged academic access to the lab. However, NNL's leadership role within AFCP has marked a step change to make this call possible - becoming one of the team's most significant initiatives to date. This user access call was NNL's response to unique academic needs, including resource availability and timescales, that can make accessing facilities difficult. After examining best practice across industry, NNL arranged a fully funded call through AFCP that, prior to launching, could proactively address common academic obstacles.
Impact The call has presented an invaluable opportunity to keep the UK at the forefront of advanced fuel cycle research, skills and infrastructure. With BEIS and AFCP as central members of the call, the scheme supports key research areas to help decarbonise the UK economy as part of the UK Government's Clean Growth Strategy. Given the call's collaborative model, the stakeholders involved were also able to maximise benefits for all participants while uniquely addressing many of the common obstacles that academic users have previously faced. While NNL planned the call well before the impact of COVID-19 was understood, its timing introduced important safety considerations to the scheme. Although the pandemic did not affect details of the call process itself, NNL had to swiftly adapt to the situation and continue to set safety as its top priority. NNL has undertaken a robust risk assessment process with continuous review to ensure it performs all work safely and to the satisfaction of everyone involved. One option to maintain research momentum is remote access, where academics can send their samples and instructions to NNL for the lab to complete work on their behalf. This approach works well while necessary due to travel restrictions and limitations on the number of individuals working in labs. However, to maximise benefits to both academics and NNL, the team is committed to providing opportunities for physical access as part of the call once this can be done safely. NNL aspires to improve the process by exploring innovative ideas to improve the future remote user experience. The call has been immensely successful beyond its behind-the-scenes operations. NNL received a total of sixteen highly competitive applications from universities across the UK. The depth and breadth of submissions demonstrated the high calibre of commitment, enthusiasm and value across academic teams, which together paint an encouraging picture of the UK's advanced fuel cycle research landscape.

Description Imaging of Biological Printing for High Throughput Applications (IAA Proof of Concept Award with FFEI Ltd.)
Organisation FFEI
Country United Kingdom
Sector Private
PI Contribution The University of Manchester is a pioneer in the field of cell printing and has been working in the field for over 10 years with EPSRC funding supporting Ph.D. studentships, A Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship(Dr. R.E. Saunders), EPSRC grant support with the most recent to Derby being EP/L012022/1 and BBSRC support e.g. BB/N01250X/1. It has also featured in the Doctoral Training Programme in Regenerative Medicine and is an important component of the Henry Royce Institute Biomaterials Theme EP/P025021/1 and EP/R00661X/1. Manchester has considerable experience in printing a range of cells and exploring the physical science aspects of the process, e.g. influence of shear flow and acoustic effects on cell viability, and machine and process development to optimise viability. The integration of cell printing with high throughput analysis remains unexplored commercially. The proposed project will exploit the several years of experience accumulated in Manchester on successful cell deposition, placement, patterning for applications in tissue engineering, medical engineering and organ-on-a-chip technology. This will provide basic understanding for the integration of a bioprinter with the imaging technology skills of the industrial partner.
Collaborator Contribution FFEI has significant, existing commercial expertise in digital scanning for whole-slide imaging in pathology and manufacturing of digital inkjet engines. This project will investigate, for the first time, combining high throughput cell printing (Manchester) and high-throughput scanning analysis techniques (FFEI) for application to drug discovery, tissue engineering and medical diagnostics.High-throughput printing of cells and biological material into discrete formations, followed by highly variable over-printing and simultaneous digital analysis, offers an all-in-one solution that is currentlynot available. This presents opportunity for FFEI to integrate and manufacture project outputs to approach new markets. The IAA proof of concept data produced will lead to a future novel and commercially viable life science device that can be developed further by FFEI.

Results and Impact The Henry Royce Materials Science Summer School is a 4-day residential summer school held in July each year. It offers places to around 25 year 10 students (aged 14-15), and aims to introduce materials science and engineering to them, as well as give them a taste of university life. Day-time activities include a mixture of lectures, interactive labs, and tours. For instance, tours of a Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility and the National Graphene Institute have been arranged for every year. In 2019, day-time activities also included a session on equality, diversity and inclusivity in science - this was entitled "The Winning Mindset" and was delivered by Polkadot Consultants Ltd.

The Henry Royce Institute supports the summer school by providing funding as well as assistance with advertising and some delivery of content. The funding, which amounts to around 50% of the summer school costs, has enabled us to dramatically reduce the cost of attending the summer school, as well as provide more bursaries for disadvantaged students.

For each summer school, we have provided some students (x7 in 2017, x10 in 2018, x12 in 2019) with a bursary owing to their disadvantaged background (this reduced the total cost to a £25 deposit). None of these students had family members who attended university.

Feedback from students has been very positive. Over the three years we've run the programme, 90% of attendees have rated it overall as either "good" or "excellent". Over 80% of students said it has increased their interest in attending university, and 75% said it had increased their interest in studying materials science.

Results and Impact The Royce Institute Hub Building hosted the First UK Workshop on High-Entropy Materials on Friday 9th September 2022. The workshop aimed to (i) identify and establish a UK community on high-entropy materials, (ii) create an inclusive forum for sharing ideas, (iii) enable greater networking and formation of new partnerships, especially between industry and academia, and (iv) highlight areas of challenge and opportunity in the field. The day comprised a mixture of short 10-minute talks from academics and industry, complemented by 2-minute 'elevator pitches' from early-career researchers (PDRAs and PhDs). Those submitting abstracts for 10-minute talks were asked to focus on one of three areas: (i) challenges, (ii) opportunities, or (iii) new ideas and methods of interest to the whole community.

In total, over 40 people attended in-person, with a further 40 participating via Zoom (the hybrid format was very successful). x14 different UK universities were represented, alongside participants from x5 companies and representatives from STFC and a Catapult. There were also a few international participants online (although the principal focus was the UK community).

Presentations covered a range of topics, including: high-throughput manufacture and screening of alloys, opportunities associated with functional high-entropy nanomaterials, and the challenges presented by sustainability considerations. Discussions were both lively and fruitful (regularly having to be cut short owing to time), and highlighted a number of opportunities for concerted action, including: better standardisation of data reported for new high-entropy materials (to allow for better comparisons), and the need for improved thermodynamic data. Further focussed discussions are already being planned between academics and industry, in anticipation of applying for UKRI funding.

Prizes for the best elevator pitches were sponsored by two industry partners - Qinetiq and Metalysis Ltd. The workshop was organised by Ed Pickering (Manchester, AMP RAL), Kathy Christofidou (Sheffield, AMP TPL) and Nick Jones (Cambridge), with assistance from the Royce Hub team.

Results and Impact The NEA Expert Group on Innovative Structural Materials (EGISM) organised a workshop together with the Spanish Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT) on the development, potential uses, opportunities and limitations of high entropy alloys for nuclear applications. Held virtually on 19-21 October 2021, the event attracted 120 participants from 11 countries who exchanged the latest developments and innovations in the field of high entropy materials and complex concentrated alloys. The workshop opened with an overview on research and development initiatives in this field with perspectives from the People's Republic of China, the European Union and the United States. The discussions then addressed numerical design and computational approaches to develop high entropy alloys, as well as fabrication and manufacturing and microstructures and mechanical properties of high entropy alloys. Irradiation resistance of high entropy alloys and their compatibility with corrosive environments were also explored. Participants agreed on the importance of collaboration at the international level to support the acceleration of high entropy materials development for use in the nuclear industry. A broad consensus was also expressed on the need to accumulate both theoretical and experimental data on the behaviour of these materials in conditions that simulate nuclear reactor conditions. Considering the broad variety of systems included in this class of materials, efforts will be also needed to collect and systematise data in a consistent way as they are produced - especially considering the fact that research in this field heavily involves the use of machine learning techniques for both material design and material modelling purposes.

Geographic Reach International
Primary Audience Other audiences
Results and Impact This event was aimed at materials science researchers (from any discipline) who collect, store, analyse and share experimental data associated with their samples: e.g., optical images, SEM images, property measurements, etc. The workshop shared examples of best practice and current initiatives in the area, and began to formulate a list of actions to enable better data management practices.

Changing data management and sharing culture requires the involvement of everyone in the community. Accordingly, the meeting was open to all, at all stages of their career, from all institutions and backgrounds. All discussions were moderated to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to contribute (as time permitted), and that no group of individuals dominated the discussion. We were particularly seeking contributions from those who have not previously been involved in shaping policy in this area.
The workshop format was based around discussions of questions, which were stimulated by short talks from speakers.
