Urban Albedo Computation in High Latitude Locations: An Experimental Approach

Abstract

The proposed research will develop a novel experimental and modelling study for the computation of urban albedo in high latitude locations, using London as a representative urban environment in the UK. This work is primarily motivated by the need to provide accurate albedo estimates for urban configurations, as such calculations are lacking in most Urban Heat Island (UHI) models used to mitigate its effects.

The research will investigate the seasonal effects of albedo on urban temperature. Albedo intervention can bring substantial positive effects during the summer while marginal negative effects are expected in winter. In mild climates such a negative effect might out-weigh summer benefits. It is possible that seasonal intervention on the urban fabric could give an overall positive impact but for this, accurate computation of urban albedo is required at urban design or intervention stage. These issues will be investigated in the proposed study which has three aims; (a) to investigate experimentally the impact of urban fabric on urban albedo; (b) to develop a catalogue of urban albedo for various material and geometrical combinations and (c) to develop an empirical model to predict changes in urban albedo in relation to changes in urban fabric and solar altitude with a specific focus on advanced materials. This aim will be achieved through an extensive experimental study that includes field and laboratory scale measurements, computer modelling, and followed by the development of an urban albedo calculator that is able to explore seasonal variations. The Urban Albedo Calculator values could be used to predict the urban heat island with greater confidence.

Planned Impact

The urban albedo project will lead to a step-change advancement in the understanding of the photometric phenomena of urban surfaces in the context of complex urban geometries. The research will have an impact on UK policy makers in DBEIS, DCLG, DEFRA, GLA and in many local authorities. The policy makers in these organisations can develop urban environment related guidelines that have an impact on façade characteristics more confidently, especially guide lines to mitigate the UHI. Advanced knowledge of urban albedo will lead to better management of UHI. The research will help designers to ensure that new and refurbished façades will have a low impact on outdoor overheating in the summer, which is likely to become more prevalent with future climate change. Planning, urban design, architecture, civil engineering and environmental practices could use the research findings as well as the urban albedo calculator in their day to day consultancy work. Planners and designers could use the urban albedo values from the catalogue to evaluate alternative schemes at early stages. Currently, planners and designers on most occasions carry out urban albedo evaluations based on subjective judgement. Overall the urban albedo calculator will reduce the uncertainties associated with reflective radiation in predicting urban heat island intensity (UHII) and building energy performance. Public understanding of the impact of infrared radiation in the urban environment will be enhanced, through the involvement of school children with the experiments, inspiring students to study STEM subjects. The findings could point the façade material manufacturers towards new directions especially in terms of high urban albedo materials. Further, manufacturers could test these products in different urban geometries using the Urban Albedo Calculator, as well as through the test site which will be set up at University of Kent. Developers of free-ware software focusing on urban climate will have the opportunity to integrate the Urban Albedo Calculator into their model.
 
Description The University of Kent has developed a 1:10 scale physical model of a residential area in Islington, London, identified as representative of the urban settings of London, incorporating variations in block geometry, canyon geometry and surface materials. It was built at the University of Kent campus for logistical reasons. The model includes asphalt for the ground surface, and has been built with brick building blocks, as brick is the most commonly used material in London, and roof tiles for the pitched roofs.
A bespoke monitoring plan was developed to capture detailed incoming solar irradiance and reflected radiation at different points within the experimental model, by means of back-to-back pyranometers, where the upward- and downward-looking pyranometers measured incident and reflected radiation respectively. The experimental phases of the physical model included application of different colours, as well as integration of building materials, such as glazing, cladding, and concrete paving to reflect gradual changes, aimed at evaluating the impact of materials and colour on canyon albedo alongside the canyon's reflective power in the infrared, and the impact of rain.
The results highlighted that the addition of concrete paving at street level tarmac increased the street canyon albedo with a similar effect found from application of façade colour, while the substitution of tarmac with grass increased canyon albedo by 70%. Brickwork and aluminium cladding façades were seen to contribute to significantly higher canyon albedo than curtain wall across the measured solar irradiance spectrum. The results also revealed the highly dynamic nature of canyon albedo, which presented diurnal and seasonal variations, and a consistent rainfall-induced reduction of albedo in the range 22-36% throughout the experimental phases.
The study also used radiation measurements from the physical model to calibrate the digital model and examine computationally some of the parameters affecting urban albedo by means of the highly-sophisticated lighting simulation tool, RADIANCE. The variations in canyon geometry (H/W ratio), building geometry and orientation was also investigated through different scenarios, at ground and roof levels. The effect of orientation was found to be significant for the canyon albedo but not for the urban albedo, for the typical H/W ratios studied.
The results demonstrated that increasing the H/W ratio has the most significant impact on urban albedo. They highlighted the substantial impact of urban materials and their position on urban albedo and demonstrated the dominant effect of horizontal ground surfaces. The impact of vertical surfaces on the radiation exchange within the street canyon becomes more significant with increasing building height.
Brunel has carried out a modelling study of urban albedo, with the model calibrated using field monitoring in the case-study urban area in Islington, London, and measurements from the 1:10 scale model built at Kent. It used ENVImet to carry out the simulations and evaluated the IVC algorithm for radiation transfer. The algorithm showed a good agreement with measurements for reflections computation within urban canyons. It also used EnergyPlus to evaluate the impact on indoor conditions.
The simulation results showed that increasing the road reflectance has high absolute and relative impact on Urban Canyon Albedo (UCA) in wide canyons. In deeper canyons, the absolute impact of the road reflectance is reduced while the relative impact of the walls' reflectance is increased. also showed that increasing surface reflectance in urban canyons has a detrimental impact on outdoor thermal comfort, due to increased inter-reflections between surfaces leading to higher mean radiant temperatures. This can be avoided by using reflective materials only on the top half part of the canyon façades. Increasing the road reflectance also increases the incident diffuse radiation on adjacent buildings, producing a small increase in indoor operative temperatures. The findings can be used to formulate design strategies to improve the urban thermal environment by using reflective materials in urban canyons without compromising outdoor thermal comfort or indoor thermal environments. The most effective strategies to increase urban albedo are (a) Increasing the reflectivity of roads in low-rise urban canyons and (b) Increasing the reflectivity of the top half of the canyon's façades in high-rise urban canyons.
Loughborough University has developed protocols for materials degradation testing using weathering chambers and test standardization along with characterisation.
The three Universities collaborated in the development of a model for urban albedo computation. The urban albedo calculator, currently designed for latitude 51° N/S, enables the calculation of hourly or mean daily albedo of a 2D street canyon, at eaves level, any time of the year, under different sky conditions. Other user inputs include façade orientation, time of the day and month, sky conditions (sunny or cloudy) and materials. The calculator was designed with flexibility and extensibility in mind to allow future inputs and alterations.

Outputs for building practitioners:
• Series of design guidance on the influence of design decisions for materials and geometry, their impact on urban albedo and implications for urban design and planning.
• Artificial weathering and characterisation protocols for various materials commonly used in facades were developed
• An Urban Albedo calculator tool with simple inputs to predict changes in urban albedo in relation to changes in urban fabric and solar altitude. This is based on fundamental equations cross-checked with the computational, field and experimental results.

Possible economy and health impacts:
- Economic aspects: reflective materials are a cost effective solution as they are relatively low cost and easy to apply to surfaces
- Health aspects: reflective materials can reduce overheating risk outside and reduce heat transfer to buildings thus reducing overheating inside.

Collaborator Contribution Prof Raphaël Compagnon is one of the international experts of the highly-sophisticated, ray-tracing lighting simulation tool, RADIANCE. He has also been further devlepiong the tool over the years. In the context of the project, Prof. Compagnon provided his expertise on the RADIANCE simulations conducted by Kent, followed by intense training of PhD student involved in the project on the RADIANCE software, along with the revised protocols to address the problems encountered in the simulations. Beyond the initial contract, the collaboration continues with Prof. Compagnon offering his expertise and intellectual input as the simulations part of the work is advancing. This collaboration will continue till the end of the project aiming to develop a publication.
Impact An advanced RADIANCE model, which can fully simulate the complex urban geometry scenarios investigated in the project.

Results and Impact The after-school STEM speed dating event took place at the City of London School for Girls on 21st January. Prof. Nikolopoulou provided an overview of careers in architecture - civil engineering-built environment, while also highlighting careers I research and how careers in practice, industry, consultancy as well as academia can intertwine. The Urban Albedo project was used as one of the case studies.

Results and Impact After initial communications with the Head of Physics and Electronics from Kent College Canterbury, he visited the Albedo site on campus with students interested to engage with physical experiments. Along with our team, a series of experiments were devised where the students would be looking at different parameters. Different groups of students would be engaging with different scale building blocks, conducting measurements to evaluate the impact of changes in geometry and materials. These would from part of their curriculum.
As highlighted on the School's website:
"The most recent project we have started running with the University of Kent is an Architecture research project looking into Urban albedo. Students get to design and build a scale model of a building to see how it affects the albedo of the universities scale model of a small area of London."

Sadly, due to the covid-19 pandemic the experiments with the students engaging with the physical model could not go ahead. Later in the academic year, our team sent the School some outputs from the project, as urban albedo was a topic investigated from IB students as extensive project.

Results and Impact The International Seminar on Courtyard Performance and Thermal Modeling at the University of Seville focused on the results from a recent project on the environmental performance of courtyards, involving detailed monitoring, mathematical modelling, dynamic thermal simulations and energy analysis. The international seminar, involved keynote presentations from the Universities of Cadiz, Harvard and Kent. It was held at the School of Architecture of Seville, and involved collaborations with researchers from the groups of Thermal Technology, Mathematical Modeling, and Simulation of Environmental Systems.

Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou, gave a keynote presentation entitled "Urban open spaces and thermal comfort" where she also presented the Urban Albedo Project.
This event marked the beginning of a new collaboration with Kent in the context of a new project on the role of courtyards in contemporary architecture.

Results and Impact Robert Huxford, Director of the Urban Design Group, wrote an article for the Urban Design Journal (Issn 1750 712x), on 'Climate Responsive Urbanism' for the spring 2020 issue. The article discussed the event organised by the Edge debate titled, 'Climate Responsive Urbanism: How can professionals meet the challenge of urban densification in a time of climate change?' and co-hosted by the Urban Design Group on 9th January 2020. In this event Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou presented her talk "Climate responsive urbanism; opportunities and conflicts" and a summary from her talk along with an image of the Urban Albedo site at Kent, highlighting the different materials and colours is included in the article.

The Urban Design Group is membership organisation which, since its foundation in 1978  has played a major role in putting urban design on the professional and political agendas, helping to transform the quality of both exisiting and new urban development.

Results and Impact Professor Marialena Nikolopoulou at the Edge debate titled, 'Climate Responsive Urbanism: How can professionals meet the challenge of urban densification in a time of climate change?' on 9th January 2020. The title of the talk was "Climate responsive urbanism; opportunities and conflicts"
The event was jointly hosted with The Urban Design Group, the first in a series of debates entitled Cities, Climate and Critical Urban Infrastructure. The series looks to explore the 'consequences of current practices in building, urban design, planning, regulation and policy on critical urban infrastructure'. The event will be convened by Richard Lorch, Editor, Buildings & Cities, hosted by Robert Huxford, the Director of The Urban Design Group and chaired by Professor Rohinton Emmanuel, Glasgow Caledonian University. Professor Nikolopoulou will be joined by Gerald Mills, University College Dublin, Asaf Din, Perkins &Will, Rachel Toms, Public Health England, and Nicola Bacon, Founding Director of Social-Life.
A lively debate followed after the talks for addressing the issues and highlighting the existing gaps for policy and regulation. Participants expressed strong interest on the work and highlighted the lack of knowledge for interventions and implications at the scale of urban block

Results and Impact Prof. Marialena Nikolopoulou attended the LCCP meeting on 29th March 2019, on the Observing London project with the focus on 'Improving weather monitoring in London'. She represented the views and needs of the Urban albedo project, regarding data and measurements for London.

Collaboration was enabled with the King's College NASA-ESA project which was organising a flight with infra-red cameras over London. Their flight path included our main case study, Stanley Terrace and it was discussed that arrange of data for the specific sites would be provided.

Results and Impact Prof. Marialena Nikolopoulou presented the Urban Albedo Project at the CIBSE ASHRAE Technical Symposium 2020: Engineering Buildings, Systems and Environments for Effective Operation
The Virtual symposium eventually took place on 14-15th September 2020. The event was originally planned for April 2020, but was postponed due to the pandemic. It was eventually rescheduled via zoom for September. It involved pre-recorded talks, which were followed up with discussion with the participants.
Prof. Nikolopoulou's talk was entitled: "Developing an Urban Albedo Calculator for London: the experimental campaign supporting the development of the tool"

Results and Impact Prof. Marialena Nikolopoulou participated in the International Seminar 'Heat Mitigation Strategies for Improving Thermal Comforts in Low Carbon Cities, organised at the University of Seville in the period 15-16th and 22-23rd february. This was an intensive two-weeks event with various international speakers. The project was presented in the 2-hour talk 'Low carbon city and architecture: users comfort' on 23rd February
The talk was followed by a lively and extensive discussion with the audience and comparisons with their own countries from different countries in Europe and Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, etc.)

The virtual talk was part of ADAM's lunchtime series of sustainability CPD lectures. With an Urban Design group in the firm, the talk was particularly relevant to the group, as it presented developments on outdoor thermal comfort, microclimate and the latest Urban Albedo project. Results and Impact Prof. Marialena Nikolopoulou was a special guest on a walking tour led by Dr Julie Futcher (Anglia Ruskin University) with Professor Rohinton Emmanuel (Glasgow Caledonian University) as part of ongoing research into understanding the relationships between built form, microclimates and critical urban infrastructure.
'Walking with Giants' was an urban climate walking tour through the City of London, which took place on Thursday 2 September. The Urban Albedo project was particularly relevant and discussed during the walk, alongside discussing the critical role of built form in addressing the climate and environmental emergencies.
