Virtual Realities - Immersive Documentary Encounters

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: Computer Science

Abstract

This project explores the application of Virtual Reality (VR) technology to documentary content. Thirty years since the term virtual reality was coined, and nearly fifty years since Ivan Sutherland's first experiments with a "head mounted three dimensional display", developments in hardware and software now make VR viable as a mass-market consumer proposition, and 2016 sees a variety of devices coming to market. While cinema offers an optical illusion of movement, 360 experiences offer a new generation of illusion - a powerful sense of "being there" within the scene portrayed known as presence. To date, consumer VR has been associated with gaming. However, the potential audience appeal promised by presence has led to considerable interest in the video market - notably among producers of non-fiction content. 2015 saw VR projects commissioned by the New York Times, Vice News and the UN for example, the latter winning the Innovation Award at the Sheffield DocFest - one of the world's major non-fiction markets.
We hypothesise that Virtual Reality documentary has significant potential to inform public debate - offering new directions and in particular novel forms of witnessing enabled by 360 perspectives, but that the powerful sense of presence offered by immersion also gives rise to ethical challenges; does the feeling of "being there" offer genuine insight or a new form of voyeurism? do unmanned 360 camera rigs feel like surveillance to subjects? a user in an immersive headset experience is likely to be paying attention to the world depicted, but what does that mean for their presence where they are standing?
The project will approach these questions through six case studies created by industry partners - examining production and user experience. Producers will share their approaches to storytelling in this new 360 medium. With an audience group who we will follow from their first exposure to VR, we will investigate engagement, attention, understanding and emotional reaction, as experienced on contrasting VR platforms, and compare these with 2D and 3D experiences delivered without headsets. The first three case studies will address the theme of migration - one of the big global challenges that has been a notable subject of VR non-fiction to date.
The research will explore the implications of exposure to powerful documentary content within immersive experiences, probe issues around isolation and sociality that relate to the use of headsets. The project will also consider the point-of-view of the subjects of media, asking for example whether particular issues around privacy arise in the context of 3D filming and immersive display. Drawing on findings from the case studies, and from workshops with industry and community partners, we will define key themes which will be explored in the production of three path finding prototypes. These will illustrate research findings and suggest future directions for Virtual Reality documentary.
Producers are eager to engage with the potentials of VR documentary, but face challenges around language, technology and audience insight. Through a process of investigation, dialogue, and shared findings, the research will stage a timely engagement with this emerging medium, supporting the development of this new production sector, while keeping the interest of audience and subjects to the fore.

Planned Impact

The work undertaken in this proposal seeks to create both economic and societal impact.

Creative Industries are now worth £84 billion according to the UK's government economic estimates (January 2016), with significant emphasis placed on VR with a current market estimated at $6.7 billion and VR hardware sales expected to reach $70 billion by 2020 (Re/code). VR experiences are moving into the mainstream, with entry points to VR available at every level of consumer interest, from Google Cardboard to high end consumer experience such as Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

Therefore an investigation into the opportunities and challenges of VR for documentary content creation and user experience is timely and pertinent. The project will support the digital and creative economy by providing much needed evaluation, critical reflection and guidance to this fast-growing new market including VR technology creators and documentary producers, from large corporations through to small independents. This intelligence is critical to understand the affordances of VR for documentary in order for the UK to emerge as leaders in documentary content creation and consumption of this new medium. It also has potential impact for creators of content within the wider field where Virtual Reality technology is being applied to non-fiction - museums, galleries, marketing, music videos and other forms of factual entertainment, as well as those exploring VR for journalism. While the domain of the research is VR, the findings also have relevance and potential impact more widely for creators of virtual experiences such as the emerging Augmented Reality (AR) market.

These impacts will emerge from a number of aspects of the research:
- investigation into and assessment of best creative practice to date.
- investigation into and assessment of audience experience.
- networking during the course of the project and dialogue between major industry players and SMEs at the forefront of creative work in the field.
- the advancement of a common language for this new medium between makers, creators, technologists and audiences.
- the demonstration of future directions for VR non-fiction through co-production of prototypes with SMEs.
- the development of guidelines for ethical practice.

Industry will be reached through panels and workshops at the VR World Congress, Virtual Reality Summit, Sheffield DocFest, the International Journalism Festival, Perugia, IDFA Doc Lab, Tribeca Interactive and Sundance Festival.

Dissemination on social media will be key for reach so the project will develop not only a project website but also a presence on twitter and facebook, as well as targeting and working with groups with established social media followings such as i-Docs and Women in VR.

Documentary, journalism and factual media play a significant role in informing and encouraging public debate. The project therefore also anticipates societal impact in supporting the development of meaningful and ethical forms of VR non-fiction practice which can reflect and critique "our shared world" (Nichols). It will also have potential impact on the video practices of the public as they engage with 360 media, to date as viewers but in the future increasingly also as amateur producers.

Title Transplant
Description Transplant is a new work by producers Oscar Raby and Katy Morrison of the Melbourne based VRTOV studio, whose field-defining VR projects have been shown and celebrated from Sundance to Sheffield DocFest. Set in Chile under the dictatorship of General Pinochet, Transplant centres on the ideas of biologist and philosopher Francisco Varela, as he undergoes a liver transplant, it asks; how do we repair a damaged organism? How do we reorganise a damaged society? Transplant asks us to consider, through interactive VR, the relationship between body and mind.
Type Of Art Film/Video/Animation
Year Produced 2019
Impact A prototype of Transplant was experienced by attendees at the Showcase event in June 2019. The artist has been seeking further funding to develop further.

Description As the project has come to completion we are pleased to confirm that we have achieved everything and more that we set out to do which has included the following.

Through conducting a thorough mapping of English language Virtual Reality NonFiction (VRNF) pieces up to 2018 we were able to create a VR mediography. This is openly accessible, and can be searched according to content, theme etc. and is currently being used by other researchers in the field. We conducted analysis on the VR Mediography which has allowed us to detect popular content themes, how pieces have changed in length as producers explore the new medium and what different narrative and technological techniques have been employed to effect the user's experience. This led to a paper being presented at ACM CHI 2019 which received an honorable mention.

We completed a qualitative "in the wild" audience study involving a diverse group of 35 adults in 12 Bristol households. We provided them with an Oculus Go and a selection of VRNF pieces to view over an 8 week period. Within the study participants were asked to reflect on the VR platforms themselves; on individual and communal experiences of VRNF; on their emotional & intellectual responses to VRNF; and on how VRNF might form part of a wider diet of nonfiction media. The data from this study was published as an article in Convergence in December 2020 and a version is due to be published as an article in Immerse News in late Spring 2021.

We also completed a psychological study with over 100 participants examining how watching the VRNF documentary "Clouds Over Sidra", which shows the life of Syrian Refugees in a refugee camp in Jordan, affects participants explicit and implicit attitudes towards Arabs and pro-social behaviour. Participants viewed the documentary on either an Oculus Rift or on a tablet and either as a 360 video or from a fixed view. The data from this study has been published in two papers, one the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied and another in the IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces.

We worked in collaboration with the BBC on a psychological study examining the effect of co-presence/synchronised viewing of immersive content on audience response. The data from this study is currently being written up for a journal paper.

We also commissioned three path-finding VRNF Prototypes. We received 150 applications from around the world including award-winning producers and artists. In order to facilitate diversity and inclusion within the process, we created two commissioning calls, one for experienced VR producers which led to the Transplant VR prototype developed by VRTOV, an award-winning agency based in Australia, and one for experienced nonfiction producers but who had not worked with VR before. The latter resulted in two pieces. Love and Seawater by Lisa Harewood and Ewan Cass-Kavanagh explored the experience of family separation typical of economic migration from the Caribbean to the UK. Waiting Room: VR by Victoria Mapplebeck explored the impact of breast cancer on a woman and her family. All three prototypes were shown to an invited audience at the project's showcase in June 2019. Waiting Room: VR went on to be selected to premiere at Venice International Film Festival 2019 and IDFA DocLab 2019 where it won the award for Best Digital Storytelling as well as listed in the Top 50 XR experiences of 2019 by Forbes Magazine.

We undertook a production study interviewing a wide range of UK based producers within VRNF to explore current business models, alongside examining the three commissions we produced in detail exploring their production processes. This influenced our understanding of the complexities around creating immersive VR experiences in particular highlighting ethical concerns. We have been involved in organising several events regarding the ethics of VRNF including an event hosted by the BBC attended by international academics and industry. This also led to Mandy Rose to be invited by MIT OpenDocLab to present on the Ethics of VRNF as part of their popular international lecture programme, and was the highest attended of their Autumn 2020 series.

We have undertaken a psychological study on the Waiting Room: VR piece exploring the effect of posture upon audience response to the immersive experience. The data from this study is currently being analysed and will be written up as a Journal paper.

We finished the project with an online webinar hosted by Bristol Vision Institute which was well attended by people from across the world, from a diverse range of interests including creative practitioners, industry and academics from multiple disciplines.
Exploitation Route The VR mediography is openly accessible for both academics and VR producers to explore and feedback. http://vrdocumentaryencounters.co.uk/vrmediography/

Description The three Virtual Reality Nonfiction (VRNF) commissions have generated economic, social and cultural impact and the three production companies commissioned have gained economic value. As two of these were companies involving producers from demographics under-represented within the field, this also has a cultural impact - building the diversity of capacity within the sector. There has also been social and cultural impact in relation to the content of the three commissions. Waiting Room: VR describes the situation of a woman undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Engagement with the work by several doctors at different hospitals has led to an influence on patient care within the field, with the aim to create more empathy in healthcare professionals particularly within the diagnosis stage. The Waiting Room: VR has gone on to receive funding for deployment of the piece at various film festivals, in person and online, reaching many thousands, some of whom may have been affected directly or indirectly by the issues raised in the piece, and as a result of experiencing it have received elements of reassurance. Love & Seawater addresses the legacy of the separations between parents and children that have been a feature of Caribbean economic migration. The work was co-created with a group of Caribbean elders in Bath; an approach which allowed participants to share and reflect on their own personal histories. The VR commission has facilitated the exposure of a difficult aspect of migration which is well-known to Caribbean migrants, but little known within the wider UK culture. It has supported the producer in one stage of a long-term project on this theme, which is of significant cultural value. The testimony of the mother and child protagonists within the VR piece has resonated particularly well with the intended audience. The articles which have been published in Immerse News have enabled our findings to be disseminated widely within creative industry, and in one case has been translated into Chinese for use at an event for the general public in China. These articles have been well received with 68 engagements received so far. The work on the ethics of VRNF has been widely shared within creative industry (the Voices of VR podcast and MIT Open Doc Lab lecture) and can be expected to yield tangible impacts in due course. Both Kirsten Cater and Mandy Rose are now contributing to the development of an IEEE white paper which can be expected to yield impacts on policy, platform owners and the public. In a context of inadequate audience research on VR to date, the insights yielded by the Household Study has been welcomed by producers. The CEO of Limina, a prize-winning UK agency said: "I have read your audience study now and seen your webinar presentation, I have to say it is so so insightful and revealing; what you found confirms a few hunches I had but also takes it much further - I just wanted to say *THANK YOU* for making such an important project happen. It's actually helping me in business planning for Limina, post covid."

Results and Impact FUTURES (European Researchers' Night) is a Europe-wide event that takes place every year to celebrate cutting-edge research across Europe. The team took part in the "After Hours at We the Curious" event which was extremely popular, where the free tickets for the general public were "sold out" some weeks beforehand, with over 400 members of the public attending on the evening itself. The stand was extremely popular amongst visitors, and it contained posters and information about the project (with a focus on ethics of VR), and interactive timeline as well as areas for the public to post their ideas and thoughts. We provided numerous headsets for the general public to try out pre-loaded VR non fiction content and engaged with them about the topic of VR ethics, gaining some very valuable insights from these interactions.

Results and Impact The webinar was very well attended and had over 200 attendees registered in advance. The recording of the webinar is available to watch on the Virtual Realities Immersive Documentary Encounters website. Attendees were very engaged throughout the event, and the Q and A which followed. We also provided an informal space at the end of the event after the Q and A for informal discussion of the research, which was also well attended, and sparked lively and interesting debate. Two of the three commissioned teams were represented at the webinar and so were able to input into the discussions. We received lots of positive feedback about the event and the numerous outputs of the research which were talked about on the day.

Results and Impact Our first project workshop What do we need to know? was held on Friday 19th January at the Watershed in Bristol. It was the first of four workshops to be held over the course of the project, providing a framework through which partners and stakeholders can co-design the research.

The workshop introduced the project and staged a dialogue about what immersive non-fiction VR content experiences mean to audiences. We shared our objectives, research questions and initial findings, including an emergent mapping of the field to date, and workshopped areas for investigation. The findings of the workshop will inform the audience study and commissioning of three new pieces of VR work.

Over 60 delegates signed up for the workshop - a mix of creative industry and academics - which ensured we had a balanced discussion from a range of voices, backgrounds and interests. We had four guest speakers throughout the day to help push discussions around the use of VR for non-fiction both the challenges and opportunities.
