Abstract

This network grant is focused on acoustics and pursues two main aims: (i) transfer new experimental techniques, models and scientific insights; (ii) promote mobility between universities, industry and other non-academic beneficiaries. In this respect, the UK has a critical mass and international reputation in acoustics which needs to be maintained and enhanced. Acoustics-related research in the UK is internationally leading and underpins key technological areas such as healthcare, manufacturing, defense, energy, digital communications and transport. However, the knowledge transfer and adoption of recent developments in physical acoustics, signal processing and numerical methods by industry and other end users (e.g. consultants and government bodies) needs improving. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, there is no existing single point of access network/central hub in the UK which brings the key academic and industry players together. Acoustics-related research in the UK's universities is fragmented, often applied to specific topics and length scales and suffers from inadvertent duplication. As a result, it is difficult for industry to engage with, or understand what is happening in, academia, how acoustics research relates more widely to industry needs and who in academia is the right person or which organisation to engage with in order to solve a particular industry need. Secondly, academia is clearly failing to demonstrate to the end users the value of their acoustics-related research in applications, thus failing to overcome the sector inertia for their research to have a stronger non-academic impact. Thirdly, there is no network/central hub for the coordination of the acoustics-related research through which a university can engage beyond their very specific, parochial partners, disseminate their work more widely and efficiently to the sector and generate a future road map of research which bears support from a majority of end users.

We will establish a network for the wider coordination of acoustics-related research to enable better communication with industry and multiple avenues of research and innovation. It will support the EPSRC/UKRI Delivery Plan to promote the success of the UK's industry and academia through top quality research. This Acoustics Network aligns with the EPSRC expectation for a research network, which is "... expected to lead to new collaborative multidisciplinary research proposals and some may develop into virtual centres of excellence, providing critical mass of analytical expertise." The current RCUK/UKRI funding of acoustics-related research amounts to £94M which includes £62M support from the EPSRC. This funding covers research in general acoustics, audio engineering, ultrasonics and noise. Unlike other research disciplines, acoustics related research is not currently directly supported by an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT). However, there are several CDTs which can directly benefit from acoustics related research. Therefore, there is a clear need for better coordination for the activities in acoustics to reduce fragmentation and overlap, and to use existing and future funding streams more efficiently. This is important to ensure that the quality of the critical mass of the acoustics-related research in the UK continues to stay internationally leading in the foreseeable future. Given the importance of acoustics and the value of the research funding in this area, the Acoustics Network will serve to promote this research discipline and to communicate the ongoing work beyond the acoustics research community and to the general public. In this respect, the network will be able to establish a website, software depository, hold workshops and conferences, produce newsletters, use publications by Learned Societies and Trade Associations and social media to communicate their work much more widely that is currently done.

Planned Impact

There are four main beneficiaries from this network: (i) academia; (ii) industry; (iii) public; (iv) government. Some benefits will come from the enhanced collaboration between academic institutions in the UK working on acoustics related projects (see Academic Beneficiaries), industry which makes use of the results from acoustics related research and some government departments that use acoustics related research to enforce legislation and enable control of noise. Other benefits will come from the activities which are proposed to promote acoustics as an exciting research discipline. There will also be academic benefits of this network which are described in the Academic Beneficiaries section of this form.

At present, industry on this project is represented by companies working in the areas of airspace (e.g. Rolls Royce), automotive (e.g. John Cotton), engineering and manufacturing (e.g. Dyson, Armacell), noise (e.g. Adler Pelzer Group, Hoare Lea) and defense (e.g. Dstl, Thales and QinetiQ). The network will be open for any other companies to join and benefit from its activities. The main benefits from this network to industry will be access to the right academic expertise, training, facilities and software. This is particularly important for SMEs who often do not have the right academic and industrial expertise in-house, may not be aware of it and/or have limited resources to get the access to it. Industry will also benefit from the enhanced flow of new ideas, follow-on collaborative research and technology developments enabled by the network. In addition to technology advancements the network proposes a number of activities which will help to formulate better joint industry/academic research as advocated by the Special Interest Groups. These will translate advanced acoustics related research into wealth generation and societal solutions driven through innovation.

These government agencies will benefit through enabling better environmental legislation and pollution control which are based on more rigorous science and more efficient engineering solutions from which the general public will benefit. The project will benefit from the involvement of the UK's Knowledge Transfer Network (UK KTN). This will enable members of the network facilitate innovation efficiently through access to UK KTN funding for any feasibility or follow-on projects leading to impact. The EPSRC will benefit by funding higher quality research proposals with stronger impact potential, less duplication and a more even distribution of funding across the UK's academic base.

The general public will benefit from outreach activities which this network proposes. These activities are described in the Pathway to Impact document and are designed to achieve a higher visibility of acoustics related research. This work will lead to a better understanding by the general public and government of the actual role that acoustics has on the quality of life and innovation process in the UK and globally. This will help to attract more students of better quality to courses with acoustics element. More engineering/physics/mathematics graduates with a better training in acoustics will enable the academia to recruit the right people on research projects which depends heavily on the knowledge of acoustics. In this process future academic leaders will be developed for the benefit of the UK's science and engineering for the benefit of future innovation and country wealth.

In summary, the main accomplishments of this network will be: (i) new collaborations, knowledge and opportunities for innovation; (ii) new opportunities for advanced training of future research leaders in acoustics in line with the Investors in People standard; (iii) a higher national and international visibility of acoustics related research.

Description One key finding is that there is a considerable number of academics and industrialist in the UK who are actively working or benefit from acoustics related research. As a result, the UK Acoustics Network has grown since its launch in November 2017 from 20+ member to 1200+. A majority of these members participate actively in the events organised by the UKAN and develop new collaborations leading to new research grants and knowledge transfer activities led by the industry.

Another key finding from this grant has been better understanding of the value of acoustics to the UK's economy. It was found that the UK acoustics industry contributes £4.6 billion to the country's economy annually, employing over 16,000 people, each generating over £65,000 in value, in 750 companies nationwide. Whilst those 750 companies are distributed throughout the UK, the largest concentration of acoustics industrial activity is in the North West, Scotland and South East regions. The industry is made up of over 98% small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), yet the 7% of medium and large operations generate over 80% of acoustics revenues. Productivity in gross value added (GVA) contribution per employee also rises from £65,000 for the industry average, to £73,000 in larger companies.

The acoustics industry in underpinned by a vibrant knowledge base with over 150 active research grants, worth in total in excess of £160 million and involving over a large number of separate UK universities. This research is supported by seven different research councils under UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), reflecting the multi-disciplinary environment in which acoustics operates, from social and health to engineering sciences. Industry as a whole is also increasingly recognising the importance of acoustics and investing in new capabilities, for example Jaguar Land Rover have recently invested £150 million in new acoustics research facilities.

Acoustics feeds into many major global markets, including the $10 billion market for sound insulation materials in construction, the $7.6 billion ultrasound equipment market and the potential $31 billion market for voice recognition. This is before the vital role of acoustics in automotive, aerospace, marine and defence is taken into consideration, all major UK industries which leverage acoustics expertise.

The number of partners / collaborators has increased significantly, including international partners jointly delivering technical workshops, meetings and public engagement events. In particular, the situation with Covid-19 required UKAN to change to online meeting format. This resulted in a very active live programme of webinars which attracted over 2000 participants. Exploitation Route The impact of the UK Industrial Strategy should be maximised by ensuring that acoustics is built into emerging programmes and initiatives at the earliest possible opportunity. Acoustics needs to be properly integrated within the focal areas of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) and should be designated a UKRI priority area, in order to ensure
that expertise in the field can be leveraged to its full potential. As active acoustics can increasingly provide solutions to Grand Challenges, the UK's valuable capabilities in this field need to be further connected to vertical markets in order to accelerate the uptake of the latest innovations necessary to secure UK industry's international competitive-edge. The outcomes of this funding will be used by the new UKAN+ grant (EP/V007866/1) which will run from 1 April 2021 until 31 March 2025.

Description This is a Network grant which main aim is to bring together researchers working in different areas of acoustics to enhance communication between groups, provide a focus for collaboration and innovation, and to maximise the future impact of acoustics based research in the UK. The Network is over 1200 members. So far over 100 networking events have been organised by the Network and run successfully to meet the main aim. These events brought together over 5000 academic and non-academic participants who are interested in the acoustics related research and its impact. This has enabled the industry and government agencies to understand better and connect to make use of the acoustics related research in the UK, enhance the economic productivity and improve legislation. UKAN laid the foundation for the new EPSRC UKAN+ grant award (EP/V007866/1) which will run between 1 April 2021 and 31 March 2025. This new grant will take our community further and help to align better any future acoustics related research with the four Grand Challenges: Clean Growth, Future of Mobility, Healthy Ageing and AI.

Description Scotland welcomes sensible guidance on low level background music in hospitality venues

Impact On the 12th December 2020 background music was reintroduced to the hospitality sector in Scotland The UK Acoustics Network Newsletter December 2020 3 thanks to some fleet footed acoustics research. The Scottish Parliament having banned music in August 2020 to prevent the spread of COVID without any evidence of the policy's effectiveness. In October 2020 UKAN supported KSG Acoustics to quickly design and develop a new subjective methodology statement to establish safe amplified indoor audio levels, "Background amplified audio levels and verbal communication in hospitality settings in the context of Scottish Government Covid-19 restrictions". In November 2020 this methodology was objectively assessed as effective based on multiple field studies. The research was put in-front of ministers in December 2020 where it was agreed to be suitable for implementation by both License Standards Officers and Environment Health Officers. Key public health concerns that needed addressing were: Ensure customers can communicate whilst physical distancing requirements are comfortably sustained; and secondly, to ensure that customers are not significantly raising their voices to be heard or understood.

Sound is a global health concern: Hearing loss affects 5% of the world's population (WHO estimate). A special collection about sound could inspire a new generation of scientists, medics and engineers. Our experts from the UK Acoustics Network (>1000 members), and the International Year of Sound team (195 participating countries) will cover a wide range of topics cutting across journal specialties. We are collating articles which portray the diversity and wonder of how sound reflects and affects the world, and how it reflects and affects us. These articles can either review a core concept in acoustics or cover a recent scientific article by the authors, rewritten for a young audience (8-15).

Collaborator Contribution The UK Acoustics Network (UKAN) are presenting two exhibits; demonstrations of multi-zone sound field reproduction, at the Launch of International Year of Sound 2020 enabling delegates to experience the wonderful breadth of acoustics by visiting the arts, humanities and sciences. It was created by researchers from the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR -University of Southampton, UK). The first exhibit, commissioned from artist Kevin Walker, demonstrates a multi-zone soundscape set in a variety of acoustic environments - you can stand still and let the soundscape take you on a journey, or walk around to follow your favourite sound. This original artwork is constructed from field recordings and digital synthesised sounds. The second exhibit documents the history of acoustics from pre-history to the present day. French and English language soundtracks are available, just stand in your preferred sound zone - maybe you'll learn something new!

PI Contribution We co-organised a software carpentry workshop, covering the basics of Shell, Python and Git, in response response to a workshop in July 2020, which identified a need in our community for training on basic skills in open source software tools. We advertised the workshop and paid the instructors and helpers.
Collaborator Contribution Workshop fee - normally $2500 payable to The Carpentries - was waived based on the SSI's partnership with The Carpentries. The SSI recruited instructors and helpers to assemble the workshop delivery team, organised pre-workshop team meetings and pre-workshop installation and troubleshooting session for participants (3 person days pro bono). The SSI also handled workshop and registration website creation, handling of registrations and communication with participants (2 person days pro bono). Total contribution in kind: 5 person days, estimated at £1,500.

Results and Impact UKAN, and UKAN+ via the Bioacoustics SIG have funded an exciting new outreach interactive game 'Seeing With Sound', which has just gone on display at the @WinSciCentre. Winchester Science Centre is the only science and discovery centre in the central South of England and one of the largest in the country, with a strategic vision of sparking curiosity and a mission to build science capital for all. Here is what they say about the new exhibit:

"Have you spotted the new exhibit at the Winchester Science Centre? It's based on scientist Marc Holderied's research, from @BASElabBristol, into bats' use of echolocation to locate their prey.

Have a go and see how you'd get on as a bat. Discover how moths have developed a way to hide from hungry bats. Let's go!"

The scientist behind the research, and Bioacoustics SIG co-leader Prof Marc Holderied from the University of Bristol says:

"Moths possess an amazing defence against detection by echolocating bats - an acoustic invisibility cloak. The tiny hairs and scales covering their bodies and wings are such incredibly efficient sound absorbers that they are helping us develop better and thinner noise control solutions for our homes and offices."

Results and Impact The talk discussed recent research that has demonstrated that ultrasound can be used to assemble musculoskeletal tissue, activate enzymes and trigger hydrogelation. The webinar began by outlining how ultrasound standing waves can be used to remotely pattern cell populations and how ordered arrays can be immobilised to engineer musculoskeletal tissues before describing how ultrasound fields can control the release of calcium ions from liposomes to trigger hydrogelation. Results and Impact The summer school was run for the second time and implemented feedback from the first with three pillars - live experiments, live simulations and introductory courses. Students were able to see experimental manipulation done live and could retrieve, process and analyse the data before importing it into COMSOL to run simulations. The introductory courses provide theoretical and experimental models of specific studies to illustrate the technological challenges of acoustic metamaterials.

Results and Impact The Early Careers Special Interest Group (SIG-ECG) is running an event for UKAN's early career researchers on building effective academic-industrial partnerships in Acoustics, which incorporates the second meeting of the Vibro-acoustics Special Interest Group (SIG-VA). It will be held on the 8th and 9th April, 2019, at Imperial College London. Industry partners will include DSTL, AudioAnalytic, AECOM, Precision Acoustics, Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), Hoare Lea, Dyson, Innovate UK and the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), and the John Cotton Group. Brüel & Kjær will also be present.

The event is aimed at early career UKAN members in any area of Acoustics who want to work in conjunction with industry and civil service partners in the short and long-term. It will provide a forum where attendees can share their research and career ambitions and build working relationships with industry early in their careers. The focus is on providing early career researchers with the opportunity to form relationships with industry partners who could benefit from their research work in the future.

Both attendees and industry partners will give presentations. Each industry partner will present for 15-20 minutes on who they are, how academic research has added value to their organisation, and what they identify as the future opportunities of acoustics research. Each attendee will do a 3 minute presentation providing a broad overview of what they do, their career ambitions (e.g., what challenges they would like to tackle), and why they think their research or research interests are of value to industry. Note that this is not intended to be a presentation of research results. There will also be a panel discussion, during which attendees can ask questions of the industry partners, and time for one-on-one networking.

Specifically, the approach described compares array scattering data to simulations of scattering from different possible defects. Using this approach, it was shown that accurate characterisation is possible even for defects that are fractions of a wavelength in size. Results and Impact The Dynamic Research Group (DRG) at the University of Sheffield is one of the largest dedicated research groups specialising in structural dynamics in the world. Particular topics of interest include nonlinear dynamics, structural health and condition monitoring, uncertainty analysis, acoustics, smart structures and vibration control. The annual showcase allows the DRG to showcase their research and facilities and discuss new collaborations. Typically postgraduate students prepare posters or presentations and the event lasts all afternoon to allow plenty of time for interactions and discussions. Results and Impact The Dynamics Research Group (DRG) at the University of Sheffield is one of the largest dedicated research groups in structural dynamics in the world, with researchers specialising in the fields of nonlinear dynamics, structural health and condition monitoring, uncertainty analysis, acoustics, smart structures and vibration control. Their annual showcase was an opportunity for the DRG to show their bespoke experimental facilities, present their work and to discuss new collaborations with members of this Network. The showcase started with a tour of the DRG's new Laboratory for Verification and Validation, a unique facility which allows for a versatile range of dynamic testing.

In order to decrease the percentage of adults in need of hearing aids who don't use them, the purpose of Clarity is to catalyse new work to radically improve speech intelligibility provided by hearing aids. The challenges aim to increase in complexity, but started with speech in indoor environments with the presence of a single interferer.

Results and Impact The 4 participants funded by UKAN gained new knowledge and new connections and opportunities to co-locate.

This course is a graduate-level training in the fundamental and applied aspects of computational acoustics. It covers the main numerical methods currently in use in industry and under development in academia, such as Finite Element Methods, Finite-Difference Methods and Boundary Element Methods. The course will include the required theoretical foundation needed to understand the properties of numerical schemes for acoustics. Attendees will also benefit from hands-on sessions to develop best practice with several simulation methods. Taught by leading academics in this field, the course is intended for researchers and engineers. This course is particularly devoted to PhD and MSc students.

Results and Impact In 2019 we set out to examine whether the success of contrasting rewilding initiatives in the Ingleborough National Nature Reserve could be gauged by using acoustic monitoring. We also took the opportunity to model the impact of transportation noise within the Yorkshire Dales National Park; by using SoundPLAN software. The findings of this two-year study are ready to share with interested parties. This event in April 2022 provided an overview of the Ingleborough Soundscape Project via a series of presentations from the authors of the Final Report, followed by a half-hour Q&A session.

The theme of the international year is the Importance of Sound for Society and the World and is underscored by the UNESCO Charter of Sound and resolution 39C/49 on the ''Importance of sound in today's world - Promoting best practices''. Other partners for the international year include "La Semaine du Son" (LSdS), the International Science Council and ISC members the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM).

The main goal of any international year is to to promote international collaboration and to raise awareness on how science contributes to innovation for the benefit for all society.

Results and Impact The objective of this webinar was to introduce the Boundary Element Method - a process wherein the Helmholtz equation is reduced to an integral equation that holds on all or part of the boundary. This allows properties of harmonic propagation and scattering of acoustic waves to be solved with finite element technology. The appeal lies in only the boundary needing to be discretised, as opposed to the whole fluid region. The procedure was explained, as well as its computational method, before example simulations were illustrated.

The mechanism for generating ultrasound by means of light can be thermoelastic or ablative, with the source able to be manipulated to enhance the ultrasonic generation. This allows the light beam to sense remotely in extreme environments, such as the extreme heat of manufacturing processes or nuclear environments and space.

Results and Impact This course was run by Seiche Marine Acoustic Solutions and was designed to improve understanding of underwater acoustics and provide a hands-on approach to solving marine acoustic problems. Only a basic understanding of acoustics and marine environment was required, allowing students and young scientists to attend and learn from consultants, contractors and engineers. The course had a strong focus on the physical principles, coupled with insights into signal processing techniques with the aim of providing transferable skills in both commercial and research environments.

It was a part of public and professional engagement session looking at how we listen, plus how acoustics and immersive audio could make a difference to our future listening experiences.Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford presented to the public details of his research and teaching focussing on architectural acoustics, signal processing and audio perception. Trevor is also an author and radio broadcaster having presented many documentaries on BBC radio and written books for academics and the general public. This event also included Joe Thwaites, inhouse composer at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who is working on Sony's first full-length VR game 'Blood & Truth', and 'Dreams'. Joe will also be discussing audio implementation & audio design within VR.

Results and Impact I have given talks to about 5 schools and several events such as Pint of Science where I showed how to use sound to see in the dark. Below is an example of summary I give about the talk/event.

In the pitch black, a bat speeds through the air and swoops around a tree to eat a tasty insect snack. Bats avoid trees and find snacks just by using sound. Scientists have taken this further and are using sound to detect flaws in the ancient UK sewage system! We are now designing a swarm of small robots that use sound to detect cracks and blocks in sewers. In this talk, you will learn a physicist's approach to use sound, like a bat, to find things in the dark. Will you be able to recognise the sound of a blocked sewer?

The session will cover 1) a fun application, the UK sewers, 2) I will teach how to approach problems like a physicist, and 3) there will be lots of videos and some interaction with the audience. Further 2020 is the international year of sound (https://sound2020.org/).

Maintaining the UK sewer system is a huge issue. Everytime we suspect there is a major leak we need to dig up large parts of our roads, causing traffic jams, air pollution from dust, and the whole operation is very costly. To make matters worse, much of our sewers are ancient, falling apart, and we have no idea what pipes are where. Not to mention that it is difficult to convince people to go down there to inspect the sewers. How do we now maintain this ancient labyrinth? A team, led by the University of Sheffield, have the answer: we will develop a swarm of small robots to swim through our sewers and detect cracks and blocks.
After presenting the application, I will pose the question: how do these little robots detect things in the dark? I will then show how, with a physics approach, we can break this problem down into simple manageable smaller problems. These small problems involve simple trigonometry and the solution is illustrated with lots of videos from simulations. From there, we build back up to the complex problem.
The talk will involve lots of videos and have strong visual aids throughout. Videos will include bats flying around, sound sensors in pipes, and computer simulations. I will ask the audience to hear sounds and guess what they heard. Did the sound come from a blocked sewer or not? To finish we end with how machine learning is better at recognising sounds then we are.

In North America, they have occupied nearly every ecological niche and evolved a wide range of social systems, making them the perfect candidate to study to understand how young mammals communicate physiological needs. The webinar explored the link between the vocalizations young mammals make, and the circumstances or environments in which they find themselves.

Given the vastness of its accumulative fields, the showcase revolved around topics from acoustics to nonlinear dynamics to structural damping. Multiple speakers from different fields were accompanied by a large poster display from the University's PhD students. The event increased collaboration between certain departments and projects especially at a postgraduate level.

The webinar specifically focused on an AI algorithm for a 3D smartphone touchscreen, trained with 8,000 simulation runs in parallel, to predict the location of touch on a phones screen. OnScale detail their synthetic datasets which can be generated in hours.

Results and Impact This workshop was a response to policymakers recognising underwater noise pollution from the pile-driving offshore wind turbine foundations and the detonation of unexploded ordnance as an issue for the marine environment, specifically those under protection of the Habitats Regulations. The workshop itself aimed to explore the technical feasibility of applying noise abatement measures to offshore windfarm constructions to improve the acoustic habitat in UK seas, and took talks from government agencies and industry bodies before a structured break-out session allowed smaller groups to propose solutions.

• To explore how to develop partnerships to develop public engagement programmes
• To create a project plan for your own public engagement project
The programme included:
• Three online events: 2-day long events with training modules, external speakers, plenary
discussion, and small group activities to consolidate learning; and one 2 hour event to
further develop participant public engagement plans, gain peer feedback on them, and to
problem solve together.
• Opportunities to build connections, learn from one another, and develop peer support
networks.
• Learning groups: Peer learning was supported through learning groups of up to 6
participants. Groups also had access to mentors with expertise in public engagement.
• Self-directed learning: Delegates were provided with content to support their planning,
including a template to support development of their public engagement approach.

The events covered three parts:
• an overview of research conducted in each of the four SIGs (4 speakers)
• a series of short 3-minute presentations (12 speakers from the four SIGs)
• a panel discussion with senior academics from the four SIGS (Prof Euan Spence, Prof Nick Ovenden, Prof Rob Dwyer-Joyce, Prof Stephen Dance)

Events offered fantastic networking opportunities and potential future collaborations, as well as offering researchers exposure to a broad interdisciplinary audience across both academia and industry.

Results and Impact The Non-Destructive Evaluation special interest group (NDE - SIG) of the Acoustics Network (UKAN) hosted its first meeting on Friday the 11th January in Bristol. This meeting was a chance to hear about and discuss the latest developments in ultrasonic array imaging.The focus was on NDE applications of arrays. A number of industrial speakers described how arrays were currently used and how this would be expected to change of the next few years. A number of university groups presented talks on subjects such as: fast instrumentation,adaptive imaging and defect characterisation.This event provided a forum for a wide ranging exchange of ideas on this topic. This meeting was also an opportunity to think about the future of the NDE-SIG and discuss proposals for future events.This workshop was intended for anybody with an interest in NDE applications of arrays, from students to practitioners and technology developers.

Results and Impact This webinar demonstrated the considerable depth of fields that ultrasonic particle manipulation can be applied to, from deforming micro-scale objects such as cells to access their mechanical properties, to holding millimetre-scale samples in place for assembly operations and sample analysis. Examples were shown in which high performance devices capable of many independent operations could be manufactured at relatively low costs, with the talk focused on the emergence of new and versatile manipulation technologies.

Jeff then described the design of robust, cost effective acoustic communication devices based on spread spectrum technology and explain how we achieve very low energy implementation. These devices form a building block for large scale underwater wireless sensor networks. Jeff described a number of ongoing research projects at Newcastle University addressing the monitoring of the marine environment, cetacean distribution, vessel traffic and lost fishing gear.
