Abstract

A wealth of world-leading international research is aimed at addressing the global challenges of energy (both generation and storage), climate-change and the problems associated with finding sustainable methods to meet our increasing energy demands. Much of this effort focuses on making existing technology more robust, efficient and cheaper or discovering new methods to convert, store and transmit renewable energy. For engineers, chemists, biologists and physicists working within the confines of their own research fields, it is impossible to recognise all of the key problems for given energy system.
These problems present on an extremely broad range of length scales (nm-m) and consequently calls for significantly more collaboration between the physical science and engineering to transmit the success of new materials discovery and understanding of the behaviour of these new materials to achieve durable, efficient, sustainable and manufacturable energy systems.

The North East Centre for Energy Materials (NECEM), formed between the universities of Newcastle, Durham and Northumbria, seeks to unite the broad range of expertise present at the three sites to tackle a grand challenge of energy
materials and will make it possible to cooperate widely with local, national and international industry. The main focus of NECEM will be to address one of the most fundamentally critical elements of all energy systems, namely the interfaces between the materials within it and their interaction with the environment in which they operate. NECEM aims to be a world-leading programme on the understanding and manipulation of such interfaces in energy materials. The vision is to identify, exploring our unique blend of materials discovery, analysis techniques and energy applications new approaches operating over the full range of length scales (nm-m) that overcome existing limitations, such as corrosion, charge trapping, marine fouling. By addressing previously unexplored directions NECEM has the ability to provide an urgently needed step change in the science and engineering of materials that use, generate and store energy more efficiently.

The assets of NECEM include the breadth of expertise within marine energy (tidal and wave energy), solar (photovoltaic and solar fuels by photo-electrochemistry), fuel cells (hydrogen and alcohol based, also enzymatic and microbial), energy storage (Li-Ion, redox-flow batteries), biomass (gasification, fermentation and direct conversion to heat or even electricity) and local smart grid structure (with concurrent production and consumption of renewable energy). We invite the Energy Materials community to engage with our centre to access this expertise and our unique blend of surface processing and characterization techniques distributed across the three sites. Probing and manipulating processes occurring at surfaces and interfaces is exceptionally complex but by combining our state-of-the-art facilities, which are ideal for this challenge, and our expertise in modelling behaviour in materials to compete systems, we can drive the development of new durable, efficient and sustainable energy solutions. We are geared towards cooperation with other centres in the UK in order to be able to cover a broad portfolio of all relevant energy material problems. This centre has the strong advantage of close proximity and brings together expertise from neighboring universities in the North East of England. Importantly this will enhance knowledge exchange and collaboration increasing the probability of success of the centre. It is also very attractive for additional funding both within the UK and in Europe.

Planned Impact

NECEM's goals are threefold:

1) to provide a centre of excellence that produces highly skilled and motivated researchers through addressing key fundamental scientific questions regarding the interfacial properties of materials for energy applications;
2) To provide a regional hub to engage with the industrial community, particularly in the North East, the wider UK Energy Research arena via the other Centres and Supergen Networks, and the international community to promote the reputation of UK Science;
3) To act jointly within these communities to address barriers to commercialisation of potentially transformative energy technology that could improve the quality of life and economy in the UK.

The funds will provide the security and necessary expertise over four years to enable our team to address pioneering projects that have the potential to make a high impact. Reactive projects will permit a rapid response to exciting and unexpected new discoveries from our own research and elsewhere and Joint projects with other world-leading groups supported by our visitor and mobility program.

The UK and EU governments see Energy as a priority that will drive progress towards meeting the pledged 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050. Energy is intimately linked to productivity and security and therefore improvements in affordability the environmental impact are critical to Society. NECEM supports this vision by pooling talent across several key technology areas to address scientific bottlenecks and accelerate innovation and implementation of more efficient and sustainable energy generation, storage and distribution. The applications covered by NECEM are broad and include marine, solar, fuel cells, batteries, biomass and local smart grid structure. However, each have a fundamental challenge in common: the properties of the interface dictate their efficiency, stability and often the cost of their manufacture. NECEM is uniquely positioned to address these challenges 1) by scientific and engineering expertise; 2) by sharing access to our powerful facilities specifically developed to examine the properties of interfaces between two materials or surfaces in contact with corrosive environments; 3) by closely collaborating with industry at every stage of the project; 4) by exploiting the benefits of our location, close to each other and key players in the community that we will engage with. Bringing these currently successful but independent research groups under the umbrella of NECEM will accelerate the way we examine and learn to engineer complex behavior at interfaces. It is likely that a mixture of each of these technologies will be required in our future energy portfolio and success in any would be the difference between a niche application and a transformative technology. Synergy between academia and industry will be ensured through our industrial advisory board, collaborative projects and annual showcasing events. Success will enable us to improve not only the reputation of UK science but also the international competitiveness of UK business through the provision of highly trained personnel and product innovation.

Given the importance of NECEM's research to society, our dissemination and outreach program will ensure that developments within our centre and the wider community are communicated to the general public. While each institution has a strong public engagement program already, combining our manpower and expertise will enable us to be even more ambitious in our approach. Acceptance of new technology by the public is one of the greatest barriers to wide-spread commercialisation faced by an emerging technology. Demonstrating technology within Science Central and hosting workshops and activities at the Centre for Life, the Great North Museum, Soapbox Science in Newcastle city centre in addition to national science fairs will enable us to discuss the Societal benefits and address the Public's apprehension.

This model was prepared for a showcase to introduce the current research outcome on sustainable and renewable energy technology from universities to the public. Description Our research has generated breakthroughs in our understanding of interfacial and surface processes with 65+ publications to date.
Key findings in Prof Lidija Siller's research have enabled the set-up of a spin out company Dragonfly Insulation Ltd. to scale-up production of aerogels for use as insulation for energy efficient buildings.
We have engaged with industry through our IAB, industry workshops and North East Energy Materials (NEEM) meetings to strengthen links with industrial partners within the north east region and beyond.
We have established collaborations with other energy centres including Prof Neil Robertson (University of Edinburgh and CAMREG) and Prof. Jawwad Darr (UCL and Joint University Industry Consortium for Energy (Materials) and Devices Hub).
Dr Elizabeth Gibson has secured the use of national facilities at Diamond and the Central Laser facility to further her research.
Our success in building collaborations and breakthroughs in our research have enabled us to secure funding for further research.
Specific findings from a selection of our projects include:
Tailored interfaces for flexible renewable energy systems (TIFRES)
We have demonstrated that it is possible to produce 3D printed tidal turbine blades that can operate at a tidal flow speed of 2m/s with a projected life of 7 years (for a 70% dense blade with an appropriate infill pattern) at about 50% the cost of current composite blades. This offers the opportunity of exploiting about 2000 sites around the UK. However, the design and processing of the blades needs to be improved and the life extended to at least 10 years to demonstrate full financial viability.
Photoelectrocatalytic systems for solar fuels
Efficient Electrocatalytic system for Multi-carbon Products from CO2
The photoelectrocatalytic systems for solar fuels flex fund project focuses on the using sunlight to split water to generate hydrogen or convert CO2 to carbon-based fuels and is part of an ongoing collaboration between Newcastle University and Dublin City University.
This research fits the Energy priority area and will support a joint EPSRC/SFI proposal to continue the project. Over the last 40 years, a substantial scientific effort has focused on developing molecular photocatalysts for CO2 reduction or H2 generation to generate a "solar fuel". The light-driven oxidation and reduction reactions are typically investigated individually using sacrificial electron donors or acceptors. To provide a sustainable method of delivering the electrons supplied by the oxidation of water to the catalyst reducing H+ or CO2, recent efforts focus on immobilising molecular catalysts onto electrode surfaces, such as TiO2 or NiO. While results are promising, the development of these dye-sensitised photoelectrochemical cells is challenging as the underlying mechanism of many steps in the catalysis cycle remains unclear. The work builds on our previous success with organic dyes and Ru-Pd/Pt complexes immobilised on NiO for solar water splitting devices. In this project we have shown that Ru-Re and Ir-Re photocatalysts immobilised on NiO cathodes generate photocurrent under irradiation with visible light. On prolonged irradiation bubbles from on the electrode surface which have been confirmed as CO and H2 (syn gas). Therefore we have shown that under ambient light and pressure and near neutral pH, CO2 and water can be selectively converted to syn-gas. This can be used as a fuel or and a feedstock for other chemicals such as alcohols and hydrocarbons.
Creating an Open Access Facility for Lifetime Assessment of Emerging PV
This project aimed to develop a facility for testing how emerging solar cells degrade over time. The hardware to enable this has been designed and tested. The facility is intended to benefit the UK solar research community, and will additionally establish a growing centre of expertise in this vital research area.
Nanoscale Interfacial Engineering of Antimony-based Absorber Materials for PV Applications
The key to the project was to identify routes to improve antimony based photovoltaic structures via interface engineering. It was shown that engineering the interface with the electrode materials has an important effect. Once the study is completed, the published findings will benefit the scientific community, highlighting how higher voltage and better device performance can be achieved. Note that this study has been extended by Northumbria University to enable the work to be concluded as there is a shortfall on expected objectives milestones due to the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic.
Exploiting two-dimensionality for surface Engineering (ETSE)
The key results of the ETSE project have been: (i) a better understanding of the growth of two-dimensional materials by the processes of chemical vapour deposition and transport, in particular the conditions required for uniform growth over a solid surface which will reduce their production costs; (ii) a greater understanding of the behaviour of two-dimensional solids in electrochemical energy storage, particularly to increase the sustainability and performance of supercapacitors; (iii) development of a highly automated approach to the characterisation of two-dimensional materials produced by scalable techniques, to overcome recognised problems in quality control. These outcomes differ from the original project aims, due to the significant impact of the pandemic on access to research facilities, as described in the Covid impact section of the report. Outcomes (i) and (ii) are of particular relevance to the research community and work on two-dimensional materials for energy storage is being carried forward with the aim of long-term impact. Rapid materials characterisation will be of interest to producers of two-dimensional materials and efforts are being made to interest commercial end users.
Exploitation Route The current research findings from NECEM project will be used to further develop collaborations with industrial partners and other research groups at a local, national and international scale.
The research has resulted in the establishment of two spin-out companies and there are plans for third spin-out company. The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Renewable Energy Northeast Universities (ReNU, EP/S023836/1, £5.4M) will train 65 doctoral candidates in small-to-medium scale renewable energy.

Description Current findings from the NECEM project have been used to establish more collaborations between universities and industries to seek further applications of the studies. This could have impacts on the economic and societal aspects. A series of engagement events have taken place throughout the lifetime of the centre which have been vital in building collaborations with the energy materials research community and industry. These included: • An international conference on energy materials and interfaces (29th July to 1st August 2019) in Newcastle for researchers to communicate current findings and plan for future collaborations. • Engagement event and exhibit at the Hancock Museum (summer 2019) in Newcastle during the Dippy on Tour exhibit to showcase the current knowledge and research in energy from the NECEM consortium. During this event, a number of models were presented to the public to illustrate the research on energy technology. • Event programme including specialised workshops and a seminar/webinar series that engaged both local and international researchers with NECEM research building on collaborations and disseminating our research. • Three summer well attended summer schools which provided specialised and wider academic training to PhD students, PDRA's and ERC's. • A series of industry meetings to share our research highlights and strengthen our links to industry. • Meetings with the Durham Energy Institute to explore how we can influence policy. A significant impact from NECEM is the establishment of a complimentary EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Renewable Energy Northeast Universities (ReNU, EP/S023836/1, £5.4M) which will train 65 doctoral candidates in small-to-medium scale renewable energy. This builds on the North East Energy Materials (NEEM) meetings which involve >50 industry representatives in the design of ReNU's training programme. Specific impacts from a selection of our projects include: Energy capture and transfer on scalable substrates (ECATSS) The main ECATSS project impact has been to achieve further funding and in particular in the area of manufacturing via the EPSRC grant Photovoltaic Paint (EP/T005491/1) and the North East Local Enterprise Partnership grant Northumbria University Fabrication. Both of these grants have added new capability to a thriving ecosystem of research in the North East of England and when combined the EPSRCC CDT in ReNU platform, significant job creation. Mobility of charges: From fundamental atomic understanding to device models (MOC) Project 1: Following our work the electrochemistry of POMs (Journal of Physical Chemistry C 124 (28), 15045-15056) by calculating redox potentials through two approaches: (i) an implicit solvent scheme (ISM), and (ii) free energy sampling model, we were able to show that one of the key aspects in POM electrochemistry is providing an explicit description of the environment around the POM and running free energy sampling simulations. This has allowed us to broaden our focus on the role of agglomeration in the redox properties of POMs. This has demonstrated that even upon the reduction by multiple electrons forming overall charge states of 12- to 14-, the POM is still able to aggregate into an inorganic phase within a solvent. This aggregation is mediated by the counter ions. This has a strong influence of the redox properties and is therefore essential to consider when designing materials. Project 2: Our in house kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) code is developed and our recent work has focused upon using this alongside quantum chemistry to predict charge mobility in organic hole transporters. Theoretical and experimental data gathered in this work are used as inputs to perform meso-scale simulations with our home-made code. Powering sensors for smart cities (PSSC) Through the Powering sensors for smart cities (PSSC) project Prof Lidija Siller with Dr Xiao Han have set-up the spin out company Dragonfly Insulation Ltd. to manufacture aerogels as a result of this grant and previous grant EP/R000131/1 (Aerogel composites for carbon capture and thermal management in commercial buildings - Feasibility Study). Aerogels are the best insulators known to man, they are inflammable, ultralight and sound proof. Aerogels will be manufactured in North East of England. Tailored interfaces for flexible renewable energy systems (TIFRES) The main impact for the TIFRES project has been in the development of manufacturing approaches and designs for low speed tidal turbines. This increases the number of potential tidal energy sites around the UK by a factor of 100 and offers a much larger economic and social benefit (in terms of potential energy generation and renewable energy system manufacturing. There is still much to do in demonstrating that smaller, cheaper tidal turbines are viable and this is the subject of a current programme grant submission. Photoelectrocatalytic systems for solar fuels Efficient Electrocatalytic system for Multi-carbon Products from CO2 The work from Project 2 and 3 are now being further explored by a ReNU CDT student and underpin scale up activities in the UKRI National Interdisciplinary Centre for Circular Chemical Economy, thus providing training and potential economic value. The aims are to lead to a fossil-fuel free chemical industry and an opportunity for "Jet Zero" - carbon neutral fuels for the aviation industry. Creating an Open Access Facility for Lifetime Assessment of Emerging PV There are, as yet, no economic and societal impacts generated as part of this project. However, one of the aims of the project once completed is to work with industry on the development of new PV technologies, which in turn may lead to economic benefits in the medium term. Bi-functional air electrodes for metal-air batteries The Bi-functional air electrodes for metal-air batteries project will give insights into the electrochemical testing procedure of catalysts for metal-air battery in a more precise way. This will have a direct impact on our society and relevant to the clean-energy economy. While addressing the efficiency or power density of any clean-energy electric/electrochemical devices, the measurement of the electrode area inside the device is important. In this project, a more precise way to estimate the electrode area is addressed. Also, considering the environmental impact on device performance, the electrochemical testing of catalysts has been performed at different temperatures. Thus, it has a direct impact on society with public, private or third/voluntary sectors, and elsewhere, dealing with clean-energy research. Prof. Ulrich Stimming has had negotiations with Siemens and other companies to support and invest in a planned spin-out company on Novel Redox Flow Batteries. He received a grant of £9k from Siemens in 2020 to aid in the company set-up. Nanoscale Interfacial Engineering of Antimony-based Absorber Materials for PV Applications Initial results of engineering the interfaces of antimony based inorganic nanoribbons absorbing materials points towards the possibility of controlling their orientation. When coupled with suitable hole/electron transport layers, the electric field in the structure is improve, leading to increased device performance. Such progress, along with the new collaboration to supply scalable transparent back electrodes, will have the potential to provide stable photovoltaic structures for building-integrated photovoltaic or internet of things applications in localised renewable and sustainable energy supplies. Exploiting two-dimensionality for surface Engineering Economic and societal impacts outcomes are expected to arise from our development of a highly automated approach to the characterisation of two-dimensional materials, which is key in their commercialisation and development of electrochemical energy storage materials based on two-dimensional solids. The latter is now being carried forward by a ReNU CDT student, so providing training in addition to potential economic value.

PI Contribution Through the International Network on Polyoxometalate Science for Advanced Functional Energy Materials (INPOMS), I have discussed areas of polyoxometalate chemistry of mutual interest with Prof. Masahiro Sadakane and suggested those that might be investigated as part of this project. A student from the Sadakane group was hosted in Newcastle for 2 months during 2019 to investigate derivatives of Preyssler type polyoxometalates by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Facilities were provided in my lab and three crystal structure determinations were undertaken in the Newcastle X-ray lab. The Newcastle team are currently providing the relevant data obtained during this visit for a draft manuscript for a paper.
Collaborator Contribution The Sadakane group has established expertise with Preyssler-type polyoxometalates and samples were brought to Newcastle by the visiting student in 2019. The Newcastle-Hiroshima collaborative work has been extended through interactions with the group of Prof. Sayaka Uchida (University of Tokyo) to develop polyoxometalate-based proton-conducting materials. Prof. Sadakane has prepared a first draft of a manuscript describing this work

It was a productive meeting about solar thermal energy storage system for UK household application. This system can provide the heat for 24 hours using MgO thermal energy storage system. The compact system can be installed on rooftop with minimal maintenance and operational cost. Prof. Kim Choon team demonstrated the system operation and energy storage capacity of MgO at assorted operational conditions. We also met with Prof. Willam Worek (Texas A&M university, USA) and we were agreed to have some collaborative projects in future in materials filed. We will look forward for grant opportunity in near future for advance MgO based thermal energy storage system development that will play an important role to eliminate the building heating load from main grid system to achieve 2030 low emission goals.

Collaborator Contribution CZTS nanoparticle ink thin films were sent to the partner in October 2018 and the partner is conducting initial experiments to test the feasibility of photonic curing. This project focuses on the study of hybrid organic/inorganic molecular photoactive dyads for harnessing solar energy. The hybrids are based on a Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs) covalently grafted to bodipy photosensitizers (PS). POMs are attractive candidates for the development of photochemical devices for solar energy conversion because of their capability to accumulate multiple electrons, which are required for photocatalysis. However, fundamental insights on the kinetics of electron transfer (and reorganization energy of POMs through electron injection) are still missing, yet crucial. We have been using Ultra at the Rutherford Appleton laboratories and Lund Laser Labs to carry out studies on the fundamental electron transfer dynamics using TA and TRIR. Our work has demonstrated the benefit of the modular design of the system, i.e. the tuneability of the electronic properties of the photosensitizer and POM subunits, which enables fine control of the charge-transfer dynamics in the hybrids for further applications in photoelectrochemical devices. We have also quantified the effect of the environment (cation choice, pH) on the intramolecular electron transfer dynamics.
Collaborator Contribution The synthesis is performed by Guillaume Izzet at Sorbonne university. We perform ultrafast transient spectroscopy to examine the photophysics at Lund Laser Labs (through Laserlabs Europe) and the Ultra Facility at the Central Laser Facility at Harwell.

Purpose of company is to manufacture aerogels, the most porous materials and most insulating material known to man. Silica aerogels are also nonflammable and acoustic insulators. Aim of company is to produce powders, granules and panels of aerogels that can be used in various applications (such as rendering, plastering, concrete, paint etc..). For the past 7 years Prof Siller and Dr Han developed new method of processing aerogels, by ambient pressure drying method with inorganic water based solvents that cut 10 fold production of aerogels.

Chemistry - Renewable Energy - Solar energy materials

Young researchers working actively in the field of next-generation solar cells will give practical demonstrations to explain the principles of solar energy capture and conversion to electricity (traditional and next generation technology) or chemical fuel and display physical examples of the materials and devices. We will engage the public by giving short descriptions of our current research and answer any questions regarding the research and how it fits in the renewable energy landscape.

Demonstration of how emerging solar technologies work using fluorescent dyes and nanomaterials (sealed containers + a UV torch).
Examples of 3 generations of state of the art solar devices (1) crystalline silicon, 2) thin film, 3) nanotechnology) with explanations of the new components and how they lead to new applications.
Examples of materials we use in our research (dyes/semiconductors) and explanation of why we need to research new semiconductor materials.
Demonstration hydrogen fuel cell powering small electronic equipment (e.g. light-powered solar rollercoaster) to show opportunities to store solar power by splitting water.

Results and Impact The conference was a 3-day event which brought together researchers, NGOs, and industry both in the UK and abroad (particularly sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia) to highlight the opportunity and challenges of new PV technologies in the developing world. The conference was intentionally broad in scope, bringing together researchers from the social and economic sciences together with materials scientists, reflecting a wide range of perspectives on how the technologies may develop. We had 242 registered delegates for this online event.

Our post-event questionnaire suggested that all delegates were either very (92.5%) or somewhat (7.5%) interested in attending similar events in the future. The team leading the event are following up with key leaders in this area with a view to ensuring a follow up event occurs.

Melbourne, Australia) who offered a talks across a range of Microscopy for Energy Materials topics. The summer school also featured additional academic training from Mr David Lynch (North East Local Enterprise) who spoke about North East Energy Catalyst- Driving growth across the North East energy sector and from Dr Samantha Tang (Nottingham University) who spoke about Science, Outreach and Engagement. There were also opportunities to showcase research via a poster session and opportunities for networking wth a virtual social session.

Results and Impact This event was for Green Day in a local girl school. The audience was year 4 and year 5 girls.
We presented what is Circular economy and chemical recycle to the girls. Also provided them interactive games using Lego pieces to understand how Chemical recycling works, including how to convert CO2 to useful products, as well as classify different categories of plastics.
The girls and teachers were very enthusiastic about the contents and joined the interaction games actively. They also learned many new things. There were many questions asked. The school also asked to get more information sheet and handout for the students. The school reported great feedback from the girls and increased their interest in STEM.

The Second International Conference on Aerogel Inspired Materials is scheduled for last week of July, 2021, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. As a Chair I started this dedicated Aerogel conference that will circulate around different countries and continents in the future, until now it is only one dedicated conferences on Aerogel in this field and was always hosted by Germany or France every 2 years for the past 8 years.

At the workshop which was held in Edinburgh on 4th June 2018, Beattie and Zoppi engaged with industry to identify how we could work better together and also scoped a new project with Prof. Robertson from Edinburgh.

Results and Impact 40 people attended the inaugural seminar in a series given by both external speakers and members of the North East Centre for Energy Materials (NECEM) at Durham University. The seminar, entitled "Molecular Processes in Intercalation and Redox Flow Batteries", was given by the Director of NECEM, Professor Ulrich Stimming, at Durham University. The seminar gave a comprehensive overview of the research published by Professor Stimming's groups into energy storage. The applications of energy storage devices have grown at an increasingly rapid rate. With a wide range of uses from the powering of portable electronics to the stabilisation of smart grids, the demands on device performance are thus very different and an understanding of the molecular processes behind good performance is required for further improvement. Approximately 50 PhD students, PDRA's and academics attended.

Jason Ren (@zjasonren) is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and serves the Associate Director for Research in the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University. His research focuses on environmental bioengineering with special expertise in resource recovery from waste streams and in broad areas linked to the "water-energy nexus". He came to present a seminar entitles: "Using Low-Cost Renewable Energy for Waste Valorisation" to the NECEM community on 22nd January 2020. Prof. Ren already collaborates with NECEM researcher Eileen Yu and the seminar helped to educate our community about the work they are doing.
