Future AI and Robotics Hub for Space (FAIR-SPACE)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Surrey
Department Name: Surrey Space Centre Academic

Abstract

Advances in robotics and autonomous systems are changing the way space is explored in ever more fundamental ways. Both human and scientific exploration missions are impacted by these developments. Where human exploration is concerned, robots act as proxy explorers: deploying infrastructure for human arrival, assisting human crews during in-space operations, and managing assets left behind. As humans extend their reach into space, they will increasingly rely on robots enabled by artificial intelligence to handle many support functions and repetitive tasks, allowing crews to apply themselves to problems that call for human cognition and judgment. Where scientific exploration is concerned, robotic spacecraft will continue to go out into Earth orbit and the far reaches of deep space, venturing to remote and hostile worlds, and returning valuable samples and data for scientific analysis.
The aim of FAIR-SPACE is to go beyond the-state-of-the-art in robotic sensing and perception, mobility and manipulation, on-board and on-ground autonomous capabilities, and human-robot interaction, to enable space robots to perform more complex tasks on long-duration missions with minimal dependence on ground crew. More intelligent and dexterous robots will be more self-sufficient, being able to detect and respond to anomalies on board autonomously and requiring far less teleoperation.
The research will see novel technologies being developed for robotic platforms used in orbit or on planet surfaces, namely: future on-orbit robots tasked with repairing satellites, assembling large space telescopes, manufacturing in space, removal of space junk; and future surface robots, also known as planetary rovers, for surveying, observation, extraction of resources, and deploying infrastructure for human arrival and habitation; a further case study will target human-robot interoperability aboard the International Space Station.
The research will merge the best available off-the-shelf hardware and software solutions with trail-blazing innovations and new standards and frameworks, aiming at the development of a constellation of space robotics prototypes and tools. This aims to accelerate the prototyping of autonomous systems in a scalable way, where the innovations and methodologies developed can be rapidly spun out for wide adoption in the space sector worldwide.
FAIR-SPACE directly addresses two of the priorities in the Industrial Strategy Green Paper: robotics & artificial intelligence and satellite & space technologies. The clear commitment offered by the industrial partners demonstrates the need for establishing a national asset that will help translate academic outputs into innovative products/services. Our impact plan will ensure we can maximise co-working with user organisations, align our work with other programmes (e.g. InnovateUK) and effectively transfer our research outputs and technology to other sectors beyond space such as nuclear, deep mining and offshore energy. FAIR-SPACE will therefore not only help in wealth creation but also help develop a robotics UK community with a leading international profile.

Planned Impact

The FAIR-SPACE Hub will establish a national asset in space intelligent systems and robotics that will help realise the target of creating a £40Bn UK space industry by 2030, as set out in the government's Space Innovation and Growth Strategy. The Hub will provide research and innovation to a sector that generates £13.7bn of income, supports 38,500 jobs and has worker productivity 2.7x greater than the national average (UK Space Agency, December 2016). The research challenges addressed by the Hub will confer significant benefits not only to the space industry but also to a number of other priority, crossover and downstream sectors, including telecommunication, broadcasting, navigation- and location-based services, meteorological and geospatial services, defence and security, and even healthcare. The Hub will contribute to safety-critical autonomy for extreme environments, e.g. deep mining and nuclear decommissioning, and the wider industrial robotics sector.
The commitment offered by our project partners (from industry, government, independent research and educational bodies) underscores the wide diversity of impact that will be achieved through world-leading research and innovation. It also demonstrates that we will be well placed to engage with the other programmes led by InnovateUK. Among our non-space-centric industrial partners are multinationals such as Intel, the world's largest producer of semiconductors, and preeminent robot arm manufacturer KUKA. The director of Intel Health and Life Science Innovations, for example, foresees synergies between space robotics and healthcare applications, and the founder of cloud-based telehealth operator InTouch also sees many challenges in common between the healthcare and space domains.
The convergence of AI, deep learning and robotics is poised to deliver versatile, intelligent and robust solutions for environments that are inaccessible to humans. Orbital and planetary surface autonomous vehicles push robotic exploration and high-performance, low-energy computing to the limit - which can be an accelerant to the development of disruptive technologies.
The proposal is also of direct relevance to major players in the aerospace sector such as BAE Systems, Airbus Defence & Space, Thales Alania Space, SSTL, ESA, UKSA, NASA (who are all project partners of the Hub) for application in the military, air, satellites, and adjacent markets, in addition to unmanned scientific exploratory missions conducted by space agencies.
Considering the wider implications of the proposed work of the Hub, standards bodies and policy makers that set laws and regulations on autonomous systems will be afforded a useful evidence base from the Hub's work, particularly as an entire research theme has been given over to addressing verification challenges engendered by space robotics. Cybersecurity standards, unmanned vehicle certification also come into this, with ripple-on implications in commercialisation of terrestrial UAVs or driverless cars. Creation of new business and wealth is envisaged through UK tech startups and SMEs like the Hub's existing partners RURobots and NEPEC.
The Hub will impact on the general public as we engage with them to shape the programme and show the value of robotics and AI. Inspiring the next generation will be an emphasis. In its 2017 synopsis, Engineering UK reports an annual shortfall of 20,000 graduate engineers. The Hub will help address this by working with schools and the National Space Centre to demonstrate the excitement of engineering to young people.

Description Some of the key technical findings are captured by the publications reported in the earlier part of the form along with detail provided in the most recent Annual Review (available on the FAIR-SPACE website). We delivered the FAIR-SPACE Summit on 16th February 2022 in Manchester and the FAIR-SPACE final showcase on 16th March 2022 online and in person at University of Surrey, Imperial College and University of Edinburgh. Arising from the Summit, A Summit Report will chart UK Space Robotics & Cross Sector Robotics Roadmaps, capabilities and potential missions to advise UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the broader government policy agenda. The Report outlines technical milestones achieved by FAIR-SPACE, international developments and missions together with the next step research challenges for the UK within the context of international space development ambitions.
2 Industrially relevant Use Cases relating to Active Debris Removal and Teleoperation have been developed and demonstrated alongside other research according to the programme's 5 research themes. The Use Cases have been showcased at Surrey, Edinburgh, and Imperial academic partner facilities.
Exploitation Route The FAIR-SPACE community is working to chart a national roadmap for development and prompt both the international and cross-sector collaboration that can realise the potential to be had. The scope includes significant opportunity to transfer benefits across many sectors- from nuclear power to healthcare--that can take advantage of and in turn shape the progress that is now underway, alongside plans to establish an International Space Robotics Forum that can bring robotics experts together with all interested stakeholders. It is envisioned that the Use Case Demonstrators will be used by the UK Space Industry (and others) to progress UK capability in the emerging space market, (and also telephony, mining, subsea, nuclear and other environments).

Primary Audience Industry/Business
Results and Impact FAIR-SPACE recently attended the DSEI (Defence & Security Equipment International) 2019 event at Excel in London, held from 10th - 13th September. This event brought together governments, thought leaders and the global defence and security companies from a round the world to showcase their products and services, offer Iive demonstrations and network with the entire global community. Over 76,000 attended the event over the three day period with representation from 114 countries and whilst you may think that the majority of attendees were from the Military, actually it was industry that dominated the event with over 60% representation.

On its 20th anniversary the DSEI event also saw the introduction of 2 new "hubs", one of which was Space, and therefore the Hub took advantage of this new focus to go along and make some new connections and talk about the opportunities that can arise from working with our national centre of research excellence. We also talked to representatives from all sectors about the benefits of AI and robotics in their products or services and challenged some to consider taking the human out of the loop, even if only in theory, to explore how defence or security activities could be re-thought when robotics was introduced. This, as you can imagine, led to some interesting discussions with tank manufacturers, surveillance and reconnaissance companies and even those manufacturing or supplying clothing or uniforms.
Those in the Space Hub group themselves all worked together to sell the UK's space capabilities to the international attendees and champion our strengths in the UK as an ambitious sector with a challenge to grow the space sector and capture 10% of the future global market by 2030. As well as being a friendly bunch, the Hub is lucky to work with companies who share these ambitions and are looking to those support those future market opportunities, as identified in the Prosperity from Space document, such as low cost access to space, earth information services and in space robotics.

Since this event we have been maintaining contract with Qinetiq and keeping them abreast of our activity. We have also made good links with other space companies such as Black Arrow.

Results and Impact Arthur Bouton, Aleksander Maslowski and Ann Swift visited this local school for the second year running on their request. They deliver a design project as part of their curriculum to year 7s and chose moon buggies as the design they wished to explore. Like last year the children design the buggies and show them to us to explain what motivated the design choices they made based on their understanding of the brief.

Ann Swift gave a short overall presentation of the space environment and why robotics are important. On this occasion Arthur was able to bring his fully assembled rover and gave an engaging demonstration followed by a talk about the importance of flexibility and stability in his design.

Afterwards the children came in in small groups to look more closely at the rover and ask questions. Here Aleks demonstrated some lego rovers to the children and we talked about their design as well and a little bit about intelligent vehicles.

Post visit we shared details about the UK-RAS school robot competition and have offered to go back into the school if they wish to show them how to enter.
We have been invited to come back next year.

Results and Impact Artificial intelligence along with advances in wearable robotics and sensing systems pave the way towards embedded systems that form a natural extension of human physical abilities.

Seamless integration of these systems would require the development of advanced systems that sense human intentions and mental states such as workload and fatigue. Brain computer/machine interface (BCI/BMI) has already broken down barriers for the physically disabled, restoring the ability to communicate, enhancing rehabilitation for paretic patients and allowing control of movements for paraplegic patients that would otherwise be impossible.

These systems advance our understanding of the underlying motor learning mechanisms as they alter the mapping between neuronal activity and feedback control. Furthermore, the technology has been used to assess cognitive states for mental training and attention monitoring in safety critical tasks.

This workshop aims to provide a forum to bring together neuroscientists, engineers, and healthcare practitioners from a diverse range of disciplines to present the current state-of-the-art in Brain Computer Interface research for rehabilitation and mental state assessment in critical applications. It will also present some of the major technical challenges and unmet healthcare demands that can potentially reshape the future of rehabilitation robotics and wearable devices.
