Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description After the delays suffered due to COVID-19 we were able to establish the conditions under which retinal pigment epithelial cells can develop into a differentiated monolayer that will be suitable for the measurement in the LAPS. It became obvious that coating of the semiconductor layer is needed for cell differentiation. This was disseminated to the PI contributing to optimization for the effects of coating on measurements. Once the equipment is built, we are ready to train the postdoctoral fellow how to culture the cells on the semiconductor surface and start measurement of the electrochemical changes.
Exploitation Route With the optimization of the conditions under which cells can grow and differentiate, measurements can start using the LAPS. The measurements have the potential to generate information for devloping improved methodologies for the treatment of diseases like age-related macular degeneration. The capability to monitor changes with subcellular resolution will aid the fuller understanding of disease processes and with the SICM micros resolution stimulation will be possible.
