Description The wonder of the quantum world - epitomised by Schrödinger's both-alive-and-dead cat - is rarely encountered in macroscopic measurements. In magnetism, the reason is that a macroscopic measurement will hopelessly scramble quantum details and instead yield smoothed out thermodynamic quantities, like the magnetic susceptibility.

The project team have made a macroscopic measurement on a bulk magnet - using a simple coil of wire - where the result isn't at all thermodynamic, or smoothed out. Instead the measurement reveals a quantum adiabatic susceptibility that reflects the superposition or "concurrence" of the spin states of ions deep within the magnet -- just like Schrödinger's thought experiment reveals the superposition of alive and dead.

The measurement provides a measurement of the populations of these quantum states which can potentially be used to study far from equilibrium phenomena in magnetism -- these populations could be manipulated by applying radiation and then measured by a simple coil of wire.
