Swansea University Capital Equipment for ECRs

Lead Research Organisation: Swansea University
Department Name: College of Engineering

Abstract

Swansea University will use this equipment award from EPSRC to strategically invest in state-of-the-art equipment in key areas across the Colleges of Science and Engineering within the remit of EPSRC. The primary of objective of these interventions is to maximise the benefit to our early career research community by enabling scientific excellence and in turn accelerate the careers of the next generation of researchers and this additional investment will act as a catalyst to pump prime research activity in key areas.

Equipment has been carefully identified that augments our current research capabilities whist giving its users a significant advantage in terms of the data they collect and the methodologies they are able to employ - leading to high impact factor journal articles and help leverage external funding to further develop these areas.

The specific subject areas that will be enhanced by the investment are: Human Computer Interaction, visual Computing, Digital autonomy & Intelligent System, Immersive experiences (AR/VR), Data visualisation, Animal Movement and Distributions, Catalysts and Reagents, Solar energy conversion, photovoltaics, solar fuels, photocatalysis, Thermoelectronics, Quantum electronics, Advanced polymer materials, Dynamic Design, Numerical Methods and Aerospace engineering.

These diverse subject areas will generate a plethora of impactful research outcomes that will be both enabled and accelerated though these key equipment purchases.

Planned Impact

The equipment sought in this application would enable Swansea University to generate and accelerate economic and societal impact in 3 key areas; High quality science, supporting early career researchers and aid the development of world class labs - these will lead to substantial impact upon our community, our collaborators and wider society.

In selecting equipment purchases our primary objective was to maximise the impact these interventions will have on our ECR community. These state-of-the-art pieces of equipment will give their users significant advantages which will lead to higher impact factor journal articles and help leverage external funding. These equipment purchases are key-enabling-factors for exciting and influential research.

These can be broadly be summarised into:

High impact publications.
Grant/fellowship applications by ECRs.
Invitations to international conferences.
STEM outreach and public engagement activities.
A rise in novel testing and experimental methodologies.
Knowledge exchange and technology transfer.
Increased cross-disciplinarity (evidenced in jointly published articles).
Increase in collaborative opportunities.
