QuantIC - The UK Quantum Technology Hub in Quantum Imaging

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Quantum physics describes how nature links the properties of isolated microscopic objects through interactions mediated by so-called quantum entanglement and that apply not just to atoms but also to particles of light, "photons". These discoveries led to the first "quantum revolution", delivering a range of transformative technologies such as the transistor and the laser that we now take for granted. We are now on the cusp of a second "quantum revolution", which will, over the next 5-10 years, yield a new generation of electronic and photonic devices that exploit quantum science. The challenge is to secure a leadership position in the race to the industrialisation of quantum physics to claim a large share of this emerging global market, which is expected to be worth £1 billion to the UK economy.

QuantIC, the UK's centre for quantum imaging, was formed over four years ago to apply quantum technologies to the development of new cameras with unique imaging capabilities. Tangible impacts are the creation of 3 new companies (Sequestim, QLM and Raycal), technology translation into products through licencing (Timepix chip - Kromek) and the ongoing development with industry of a further 12 product prototypes.

Moving forward, QuantIC will continue to drive paradigm-changing imaging systems such as the ability to see directly inside the human body, the ability to see through fog and smoke, to make microscopes with higher resolution and lower noise than classical physics allows and quantum radars that cannot be jammed or confused by other radars around them. These developments will be enabled by new technologies, such as single-photon cameras, detectors based on new materials and single-photon sensitivity in the mid-infrared spectral regions. Combined with our new computational methods, QuantIC will enable UK industry to lead the global imaging revolution.

QuantIC will dovetail into other significant investments in the Quantum technology transfer ecosystem which is emerging in the UK. The University of Glasgow has allocated one floor of the £118M research hub to supporting fundamental research in quantum science and £28M towards the creation of the Clyde Waterfront Innovation Campus, a new £80M development in collaboration with Glasgow City Council and Scottish Enterprise focussing on the translation of nano and quantum science for enabling technologies such as photonics, optoelectronics and quantum. Heriot-Watt has invested over £2M in new quantum optics laboratories and is currently building a £20M Global Research Innovation and Discovery Centre opening in 2019 to drive the translation of emerging technologies. Bristol is creating a £43M Quantum Innovation centre which already has £21M of industrial investment. Strathclyde University is creating a second £150M Technology Innovation Centre around 6 priority areas, one of which is Quantum Technology.

All of these form part of the wider UK Quantum Technology Programme which is set to transform the UK's world leading science into commercial reality in line with the UK's drive towards a high productivity and high-skill economy. QuantIC will lead the quantum imaging research agenda and act as the bond between parallel activities and investments, thus ensuring paradigm-changing innovation that will transform tomorrow's society.

Planned Impact

1) Academic - please see "academic beneficiaries" section above covering a) identification of beneficiaries b) description of expected impacts. The description of detailed actions we will take to ensure the expected impact are realised are described in the Pathways to Impact.
Our experience is that the ethos and model of the hub is demonstrating that both high-quality academic outputs and industrial impact can be successfully delivered and is driving not just the activities of the supported researchers but the cultures of the participating research groups.

2) Business and Industry

a) QuantIC will enhance the research capacity, knowledge and skills of businesses and contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the UK. Quantum is an enabling technology underpinning sensing and imaging developments in areas spanning healthcare, defence, security, automotive, transport, autonomous vehicles and consumer electronics. In phase one we funded 37 industry-led collaborative projects through the Partnership Resource Fund, leveraging over £2M of industrial contribution; we collaborated in 8 Innovate UK projects (£1.26M); we attracted Centre for Defence Enterprise and Dstl support (6 projects, £850K). Companies involved in projects include JLR, Horiba, Leonardo, Compound Semiconductor Technologies, ClydeSpace, Thales, M Squared Lasers, Gooch & Housego, Kromek, Aralia, Optocap, Bridgeporth, ST Microelectronics, Lockheed Martin, IQE, Sikorski Helicopters, Gas Sensing Solutions, Chromacity, QMC/Sequestim, Helia, IDQuantique, Kromek, Photon Force, UK ATC, Kelvin Nanotechnology, Q-Eye Sensors, Raptor, QLM, Eliot Scientific, Dstl, PXYL. We envisage similar impacts will be achieved in phase 2.

b) QuantIC will contribute to wealth creation by enhancing business revenue and innovative capacity. This will be achieved through exploitation of scientific knowledge, leading to spin-out companies, and the creation of new processes, products and services. Tangible impacts from phase 1 of QuantIC are i) creation of 3 new companies (Sequestim, QLM and Raycal), ii) technology translation into product through licencing (Timepix chip - Kromek) and iii) ongoing development with industry of a further 12 products including "Wee-g" gravimeter, "GasSight" gas imaging camera, Fresnel cones, "SPADNet" radiation detectors, Ultra-thin lenses, Mosaic filters, "TINKIDS" Terahertz imager, Plasmonic sensor, Q-Source, Timetagger. Nine patents have been granted for QuantIC technologies and the Innovation Space has hosted industry partners such as Dstl, Chromacity, and Bridgeporth and supported a new start-up, PXYL.

c) In the second phase of QuantIC we anticipate that given our existing relationships, the larger end-user community and opportunities through the industrial strategy challenge fund we will surpass the achievements of phase 1. We will cement the UK's global reputation in the field of quantum imaging and attract R&D funding from global businesses.

d) QuantIC will also contribute to the training of skilled people for both academic and non-academic professions, addressing a key skill need in the emerging quantum technology industry.

3) General public, schools and users of technology.
QuantIC technology will impact sectors spanning healthcare, automotive, defence and national security. Better imaging system will give improved disease detection, enhanced control of driverless cars and improvements in border control and national security applications (e.g. covert imaging). The impact of enabling technologies on society and on quality of life are difficult to predict but, when realised, are transformational.
With its programme of public engagement, QuantIC will increase public understanding of science, inspire the next generation of technologists and, through its commitment to the responsible research and innovation agenda, it will contribute to the national debate around exploitation and use of quantum technology.

Description The QuantIC technical programme focuses on revolutionary research showcased through system demonstrators, aligned to three scopes: Seeing through Obscuration, Seeing with Quantum Entanglement, and Seeing at Extreme Wavelengths. Through consultation with users, we identified the main sector areas where our imaging technologies address user challenges: 1) transport; 2) life sciences; 3) security and sensors.

WP 3.1 Transport

Real-time 3D imaging in scattering media using SPAD arrays (Buller and Leach; Heriot-Watt)
Overall Goal: Development of systems using the photon time of flight to give 3D images in degraded visual environments. Summary: The imaging systems we are developing are based on QuantIC designed silicon CMOS technology for use at visible wavelengths and commercial InGaAs/InP SPAD detectors in the short-wave infrared (SWIR). The commercial detectors are a pathway to develop the image processing capability with a view to ultimately using QuantIC Ge-on-Si SPADs, or equivalent low-cost SWIR detector technology. Year Two Goals: 1) Video frame rate SWIR single-photon imaging at 1 km range in atmospheric obscurants at > 3 attenuation lengths; 2) > 100 frames/sec (frame rate (fps) at > 200 m. Technical Highlights: In the first year a high-speed 3D imaging system that operates at more than 1000 fps at distances less than 10m was delivered. In the second year a system for field trials was developed. The testing with DSTL at Porton Down was cancelled due to COVID-19. Nevertheless, we have completed trials using Heriot-Watt's facilities (300 m range facility). Working with STMicroelectronics, we computationally upscaled the resolution of their 4x4 pixels systems to equivalent to 32x32 pixels and performed pose estimation of multiple human subjects in 3D. Paper Highlight: Tobin et al. Scientific Reports 11, 1-13 (2021). User Engagement: Proof of Concept under the QuantIC Partnership Resource Fund with Aralia with cash contribution from the company of £20k. Dstl is supporting two PhD studentship focused on single photon imaging. The pose estimation work jointly published with STMicroelectronics.

Underwater sparse-photon imaging (Buller; Heriot-Watt)
Overall Goal: Development of an underwater imaging system using time-of-flight, single-photon detectors to separate the image from the background scatter. Summary: In year one we developed a submerged light source/camera system and obtained real-time, three-dimensional, single-photon images, albeit in clear water. Year Two Goals: Field trials in real underwater environments. Technical Highlights: Over year two we implemented improvements including: a laser with shorter pulses (< 100 ps) and higher average optical power; improved software based on a cross-correlation approach; and optimised real-time capabilities with bespoke image processing algorithms. These algorithms include one on free-space LIDAR imaging, and a new, yet unpublished method. The system has been tested underwater at various levels of scattering up to 7.7 attenuation lengths. We characterised a SPAD linear detector array (1 × 16) provided by Politecnico di Milano giving a reduction in the detected backscatter, especially when used in conjunction with a moving platform. Paper Highlight: Maccarone et al. Sensors 21 (14), 4850 (2021). User Engagement: £2.7m ISCF Project led by Sonardyne on Underwater single photon imaging system - Exploring through murky, disturbed water using ultra-sensitive quantum cameras.

Wavelength transformation camera (Smith; Southampton)
Overall Goal: Use of non-linear optical materials to convert the longer wavelength infrared light into near-visible light so that it can then be detected using conventional, low-cost, high-performance cameras based on silicon technology. Summary: We use non-linear waveguides to maximise conversion efficiency and develop a demonstrator imaging system. Year Two Goals: 1) Completion of the raster-scanned imaging device with lock-in detection; 2) Photon counting operation; 3) Photon counting up-conversion detector with 1550-1600 pumping; 4) Implementation of detectors into current raster-scan imaging in photon counting mode. Technical Highlights: We are working with Covesion Ltd in developing the PPLN waveguides. We have built a galvo scanning system, together with pump/illumination laser. Photon counting detectors have been incorporated into the system and have direct images at 1550 nm and 633 nm. Late Dec 2021 we demonstrated the first up-conversion results. User Engagement: Engagement through COVISION, focusing on development of waveguide with modest relevance to imaging.

Non-line-of-sight imaging (Faccio; Glasgow)
Overall Goal: Use of photon timing and data inversion to deduce images from out-of-sight objects using light that is multiply scattered by the object's surroundings. Summary: During year one we demonstrated this concept in three regimes, optical, radar and acoustic and were able to reconstruct images of a person moving behind a wall 1.5 m away. Year Two Goals: 1) Use of Adversarial Neural Network for 3D imaging that works independently of the background environment; 2) Moving from tracking and recognition of objects to more generalised imaging. Technical Highlights: We developed two demonstrators in the Radar+ToF regime using AI-assisted 3D radar imaging and applied this technology and Adversarial Neural Networks to a specific use case: detection of concealed metal objects on people. We detected the 3D location of a 20 cm knife on a subject walking around, with accuracy of between 71-98% depending on the system, type of background scene and subject. Paper Highlight: Turpin et al. Physical Review Letters 126, 174301 (2021). User Engagement: Project funded by Google. Discussions with a range of stakeholders including BAE System on the recent results around the knife detection project. Initial market research has been conducted to inform plans for commercialisation of the technology via a spin-out company.

WP 3.2 Life Sciences

Imaging through the body (Faccio; Glasgow)
Overall Goal: Development of techniques capable of obtaining MRI-like images of the brain using light. Summary: During year one the transmission of femtosecond laser through a phantom head was demonstrated. Year Two Goals: 1) Transmission of light through full adult head; 2) Identification of optimal operational wavelengths; 3) Identification of optimal detector technology; 4) Frontal lobe brain activity detection. Technical Highlights: We have acquired a signal from light transmitted through the human head using a PMT and a wide-angle lens. The rate of detection is approximately 0.5-1 photons above noise per minute of acquisition time. We identified four spectral windows in the near infrared, the most promising is at 1750 nm. However, due to a lack of suitable detectors at this wavelength, we are using an alternative window at 800 nm. We use of photomultiplier tubes (PMT) due to their high fill-factor and large-area format. Pairing a PMT with wide-angle collection optics has yielded results far exceeding previous attempts with either SPAD-based or superconducting detectors. User Engagement: The investigators had some preliminary discussions with medical professionals.

Imaging through single fibres (Padgett; Glasgow)
Overall Goal: Development of a minimally intrusive endoscope based on a single fibre, the width of a human hair, capable of imaging in 3D. Year Two Goals: Portable demonstrator for engagement with users. Technical Highlights: In year two we achieved video rate imaging (framerate 5-7 Hz). We were the first in the world to achieve this, are still the only group to obtain 3D imaging and have also shown imaging up to 4 m range. Paper Highlight: Stellinga et al. Science 374, 1395-1399 (2021). User Engagement: QuantIC Partnership Resource Proof of Concept with the Office of the Chief Scientific Advisor for National Security. Preliminary conversations with end users in the medical sector to understand use cases.

Quantum illumination microscopy (Padgett; Glasgow)

Overall Goal: Exploitation of 3-point correlations for imaging through several cm of scattering media, uniquely, without camera access to the object plane. Summary: During year one the optical setup to measure the correlations between forward and backward scattered light was built, together with the data analysis software. Year Two Goals: Use of the reflection-transmission correlations to perform blind ghost imaging through a multimode optical fibre. Technical Highlights: So far, we were unable to measure the correlations despite removing many experimental artefacts. Description Quantum theory was one of the most significant scientific breakthroughs of the 20th Century and has led to the development of some of today's most widely used and lucrative technologies, for example the laser and the semiconductor. Quantum technology is currently the focus for $4bn of strategic investment by many of the world's leading economies, aimed at creating new industries in communications, computing, sensing, navigation and imaging. The UK Government and its innovation agencies have made a £1B investment in the UK National Quantum Technology Programme (UKQTP), which has led to establishment of four Quantum Technology Hubs in the UK. During Phase 1 of QuantIC, we developed a number of technology demonstrators which we have used to engage industry in order to explore what can be achieved using quantum technologies. During the first part of Phase 2, we have continued to develop these demonstrators while also developing new strands of research to address gaps in the transport, health sciences, security and sensors, computational methods and detector development markets. We have introduced a Strategic Partnership framework with 19 industrial collaborators. Being a Strategic Partner allows a company to work closely with our academic team and direct the development of the technology towards industry needs. We are also engaging with the wider industry community through our Industry Studentship Scheme, Partnership Resource funding calls, and external collaborative funding opportunities (ie. ISCF). Six patents have been filed, extended or published since the beginning of the project on the topics of CMOS SPADS, Non-line of sight imaging (LIDAR), Wavelength Transformation, Ge on Si SPAD, IndiPiX, and Wavelength Transformation. There are additional IP and patent negotiations ongoing regarding Underwater Imaging, spatio-temporally correlated imaging, and Superconducting Detectors. Digistain Ltd., a start-up from Imperial College and led by Chris Phillips (co-investigator), has been incorporated. Three other possible spinouts are at various stages of discussion. A portion of the Hub's Partnership Resource Fund has been dedicated to the QuantIC New Venture Fund, supporting the creation of spin-out companies in the area of quantum imaging. QuantIC released two joint press releases with industry in our first year. One to support the launch of Raycal's Correlated Photon-Pair Source, developed by QuantIC researchers at the University of Bristol, and another with Bristol spin-out company QLM regarding their award of a Business and Innovation Award from the IoP. QuantIC's media focused on the digital sharing of content. In the second year of the programme, we ran 38 stories that were picked up and shared by our partner Universities and the wider NQTP communications group on their websites and social media channels. UKRI and Technology Scotland ran QuantIC's Climate Change blog during COP-26 which was successful in raising our profile and attracting new discussions with industry around quantum imaging technology. QuantIC ran a joint press release with industry partner QLM on their gas camera and received international press coverage on the Single-Fibre Imaging. QuantIC has established a purpose-built Innovation Space where companies can work alongside university researchers to develop new technology prototypes. Located at the University of Glasgow, the QuantIC Innovation Space offers 200sqm of laboratory and office space to start-ups, SMEs and companies to support the development of the next generation of quantum technologies. The space is host to Pxyl, a start-up which is using both lab and office space in developing a fully-integrated laser microscope system which combines quantum technology both in the creation and detection of light. QuantIC is an active member of Quantum City, a joint public engagement initiative of the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme which aims to inspire a new generation of quantum scientists and engineers. Title 3D imaging from multipath temporal echoes
Description The dataset contains 3 datasets: - One labelled 'simulated' - One labelled 'RF' (radio frequency) - One labelled 'acoustic' All 3 datasets consist of signals reflected off of an enclosed scene, and measured in the temporal domain with no spatial structure in the measurement, as well as a corresponding 3D image. The simulated data was generated using a computer simulation. The RF and acoustic data were experimentally measured. These datasets each contained temporal signals of a participant in their residential rooms, as well as simultaneous 3D images of the participant and room. To gather temporal data, one participant was subjected to sound waves, while the second was illuminated with radio frequency (RF) waves. Neither radiation poses any danger to humans, on account of the low power used. The sonic and RF waves reflected off the targets and the surrounding environment, and were detected using a microphone and a RADAR system respectively. To gather 3D images, the participants were simultaneously imaged using a LiDAR system. The dataset contains additional machine learning code used to infer the 3D images of the scene from the corresponding sonic, RF and simulated data. Finally, the dataset contains the figures and videos used in the corresponding journal article '3D imaging from multipath temporal echoes'. The purpose of the dataset is to give the public open access to the research data in said publication.

Title METHOD OF FABRICATING A MONOLITHIC SENSOR DEVICE FROM A LAYERED STRUCTURE
Description A method of fabricating a field-effect transistor in which a native oxide layer is removed prior to etching a gate recess. The cleaning step ensures that the etch of the gate recess starts at the same time across an entire sample, such that a uniform gate recess depth and profile can be achieved across an array of field-effect transistors. This results in a highly uniform switch-off voltage for the field-effect transistors in the array.

Title Method for fabrication of ridge waveguides
Description A method for fabricating an optical waveguide comprises initially providing a sample of lithium niobite (LiNbO3) doped with magnesium oxide (MgO) and having at least one grating of periodic domain inversion, 28, defined therein (i.e. magnesium oxide doped periodically poled lithium niobite, MgO PPLN.) A layer of metallic zinc is applied to a surface of the sample over the at least one grating using sputter deposition. The sample is then heated in an atmosphere of pure oxygen to cause the zinc to indiffuse into the lithium niobite to form a waveguiding layer of increased refractive index under the surface of the sample. A dicing blade is used to cut two substantially parallel channels, 36, either side of the at least one grating, to define a ridge waveguide, 38, between the two channels. Also disclosed is an optical device produced by the method.
