COvid-19 Transmission Risk Assessment Case Studies - education Establishments

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics

Abstract

Schools are planning to re-open in September and with the recent increased awareness of airborne transmission of Covid-19, there is an urgent need to monitor the situation and to provide guidance on ventilation best practice. This is emphasised by the expected onset of cooler weather when there will be a conflict between maintaining high fresh air ventilation flows and energy consumption and occupant comfort.
We will quantify the risk of airborne COVID-19 transmission in schools and evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation measures, by developing techniques to assess the absolute risk of infection in a given indoor space, using field studies in primary and secondary schools, complemented by laboratory experiments and CFD to elucidate the flow patterns responsible for airborne transport. The understanding generated will underpin recent developments in infection modelling to predict the likelihood of airborne transmission within schools. The project will reduce the uncertainties associated with airborne transmission routes and provide evidence to evaluate mitigation measures. The scenarios we will investigate include changes to ventilation, use of screens, classroom lay-out and occupancy profiles. The methodology will facilitate application to offices, restaurants, shops etc.
Airborne infection occurs through re-breathed air, the concentration of which can be directly inferred from measurements of CO2. Indoor flow is strongly affected by the locations of windows or vents, the heat rising from occupants/equipment and disturbances caused by people movement. Thus, accurate representations of these processes in the laboratory and CFD are needed to interpret the monitoring data currently collected in schools, which are typically single point measurements.

Title CO2 monitors in classrooms
Description Four videos were created by the CO-TRACE project team to assist with the UK government's rollout of CO2 monitors to schools. The materials aim to explain how CO2 monitors can help teachers manage their classroom ventilation to provide a more comfortable and healthier learning environment. The videos are on our YouTube Channel, CO-TRACE website and CoSchools websites. An additional version of the videos were also made later in 2022 in order to add Italian Captions, so that these versions could be used in Italian Schools.

Title Teacher's resources: Ventilation videos
Description The CO-TRACE team created three videos on the topic of Ventilation for teacher's to use. All published on our YouTube Channel and CO-TRACE website.
Type Of Art Film/Video/Animation
Year Produced 2022
Impact The ventilation videos were shared with schools/teachers and promoted as part of World Ventil8 Day - 8th November 2022.

Description Our analysis of CO2 measurements showed that ventilation was better and covid risk reduced in schools in summer compared with winter. This is because most schools in the UK use natural ventilation and windows are more open in summer than in winter. We also found from our detailed measurements that CO2 is not well correlated with particulate matter in the air, and so cannot be used as a predictor of indoor air quality. We have monitored a number of schools and passed on reports of their air quality and ventilation to them.
Exploitation Route By viewing the informational videos we have made and place on our website
Sectors Construction,Education,Energy

Description We have produced videos to inform school teachers how they might use carbon dioxide monitors to ensure their classroom is adequately ventilated. These videos are on the project website and have been viewed over 4000 times. The videos have also been translated into Italian and French for use in those countries.

Title Indoor Geometry Generator (IGG)
Description The Indoor Geometry Generator (IGG) is able to generate automatically simplified indoor geometry and its associated unstructured mesh for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations purposes given very simple user inputs. A large number of indoor features are supported by IGG such as (non-exhaustive list): shelves, tills, tables, chairs, seats... Smaller features such as laptops, computer towers and screens can also be included. In addition, doors/windows as well as ventilation inlet and outlet can be taken into account. Finally, the adding of simplified shape of humans standing, sitting or lying are also supported by IGG. IGG allows the user to generate without much effort indoor geometries such that shop, train, bus, plane, school, open spaces..., while being fully consistent with CFD requirements. The geometry and the mesh are outputted in GMSH format supported by both Fluidity and IC-FERST open-source finite-element CFD software.
Type Of Material Computer model/algorithm
Year Produced 2021

Impact The Indoor Geometry Generator (IGG) is able to generate automatically simplified indoor geometry and its associated unstructured mesh for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations purposes given very simple user inputs. Results and Impact Based on conversations with members of the DfE, SAGE, SAGE-EMG, and SPI-B it was decided that detailed predictions specific to the airborne infection risk from COVID-19 were unreliable, impractical, and unhelpful for schools and their communities.
Instead a holistic approach to aid adherence to current government guidance concerning COVID-19 transmission, rather than `risk' per se, was taken.
This took the form of the provision of a freely available `COVID-19 Assistance for Schools Tools' - CAST.
CAST offered routes for guided assessment of the risks associated with COVID-19 transmission in schools.
CAST offered two independent levels of assessment:
- Classroom: aimed at classroom teachers, Learning support assistants and teaching assistants, and
- School: aimed at head teachers, school senior leaders, site management staff and caretakers.

CAST for classrooms: https://www.coschools.org.uk/cast/teachers

CAST-Classrooms: COVID-19 infection occurs via three main transmission routes: the droplet route, the contact route, and the airborne route. To help you ensure adherence to current guidance, please get assistance for all three routes. As you complete each route recommendations will appear below to help you to better adhere to COVID-19 guidance - for each route recommendations are: highlighted red when your responses indicate that action should be urgently considered, highlighted amber when some actions should be considered, and highlighted green when your responses indicate that the guidance is being well adhered to.

CAST for school: https://www.coschools.org.uk/cast/schools
CAST-Schools: As per 'CAST-Classrooms', focusing on all three transmission routes but aiding the adherence to COVID-19 guidance at a school, rather than classroom, level.
