Abstract

The University of Lincoln aims to strengthen and widen the activities in the two key areas of our research portfolio, namely:

Remote Inspection, Monitoring and Maintenance (RIMM): Expanding our national-leading Lincoln Institute of Argi-Technology (LIAT) and its associated research centre, Lincoln Centre for Autonomous Systems(L-CAS), by expanding the range of robotic platforms to allow exploration and application of diverse environments, to exploit our existing 5G cellular testbed for high-speed data transfer and intensive remote control. Our aim is to extend the utility of remote monitoring beyond its current agriculture-centric base to wider environmental domains and to incorporate more specialised remote analysis of soils and other environmental aspects.

Digital Healthcare for the 21st Century (DHc-21): We recognise the enormous transformations that are occurring in national healthcare provision with changing population demographics, spiralling costs and expectations of future health needs. Our current focus for these activities is within the Laboratory of Vision Engineering (LoVE). LoVE has its core base within our School of Computer Science but with significant relationships with NHS Foundation Trusts around the country and other overseas establishments. Lincoln has established a medical school as well as the Lincoln international Institute for Rural Health. Radically expanding remote healthcare support through our computer vision and machine learning research is our goal - working with, for example, the new Campus for Future Living on the Lincolnshire Coast.

Both areas are leading activities within the EPSRC remit, contributing to the EPSRC priority themes, energy and decarbonisation, ICT, and manufacturing for the future, addressing two of the EPSRC grand challenges in healthcare technologies, e.g., Transforming Health and Care Beyond the Hospital and Optimising Disease Prediction, Diagnosis and Intervention.
