Title Future Reactive
Description We worked with Addenbrookes Arts, Cambridge Curiosity and Imagination (CCI) and a local Yr4 class on a arts-based project leading up to the Cambridge Science Festival 2015. The final art work was put together by the artists from CCI from the original work of the students, and exhibited in the main hospital corridor for 6 weeks.
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition
Year Produced 2015
Impact On the basis that about 15-20 people a minute walk down the corridor during the day and 1-2 a minute at night, we estimate that around 1million people were exposed to the art work over the course of the exhibition.

Description Active Travel Act (Wales)
Geographic Reach Local/Municipal/Regional
Policy Influence Type Gave evidence to a government review
Impact The purpose of the Act (enacted October 2013) is to require local authorities to continuously improve facilities and routes for pedestrians and cyclists and to prepare maps identifying current and potential future routes for their use. The Bill will also require new road schemes (including road improvement schemes) to consider the needs of pedestrians and cyclists at design stage. Two of my papers were cited in the Explanatory Memorandum accompanying the Bill, as was a specially commissioned report in which we modelled the potential health savings for Wales of increases in walking and cycling.

Impact Propensity to Cycle Tool 3.34 The Department-funded Propensity to Cycle Tool (PCT) is a free, open source strategic planning tool that has been developed in partnership with four universities: Cambridge, Leeds, Westminster and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The tool has been designed to assist transport planners and policy makers in the planning of cycling networks and identification of interventions to promote cycling. The tool comprises an interactive map that shows the current and potential future distribution of commuter cycling trips under different potential future growth scenarios. It provides numerical and graphical outputs, including estimated numbers of cyclists in an area, and along desire lines and routes. 3.35 The Propensity to Cycle Tool can assist with the preparation of Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans and will be of particular assistance in defining potential demand for cycling, identifying the most promising routes and areas for investment, and estimating future capacity needs for route and area-based measures. Further information about how the tool can be used to support the preparation of Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans is included in the Department's Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan guidance.

Impact Propensity to Cycle Tool 4.8 It is strongly recommended that authorities make use of the DfT-funded Propensity to Cycle Tool (PCT) through the LCWIP process. The PCT is a freely-available online resource that has been designed to help with the strategic planning of cycling networks. 4.9 The tool comprises an interactive map that shows the current and potential future distribution of commuter cycling trips under different potential future growth scenarios. It provides numerical and graphical outputs, including estimated numbers of cyclists in an area, along straight 'desire' lines and along routes. 4.10 Using the 2011 Census Journey to Work data, the PCT can assist with the preparation of LCWIPs at a number of different stages, including: • planning the cycle network: - mapping trip origins and destinations (trip generation) - identifying desire lines for cycle trips (trip distribution) - allocating trips to specific routes (trip assignment) • defining potential demand for cycling across the geographical area covered by LCWIPs, under different scenarios • assisting with scheme prioritisation 15 4.11 The PCT will be of particular assistance in defining potential demand for cycling, identifying the most promising routes and areas for investment, and estimating future capacity needs for route and area-based measures. 4.12 Further information about the application of the Propensity to Cycle Tool can be found in Annex A. The tool can be found at: www.pct.bike.

Title Changing Commutes model
Description Agent based model of cycle commuting for three different English contexts. The model represents the dynamics of social influence, social learning and road traffic incidents on the loss and accumulation of cycling safety gear, on associations of cycling with danger, and on the number of cyclists. The model will be made publicly available on OpenABM with the publication of the article describing it.
Type Of Material Computer model/algorithm
Provided To Others? No
Impact To be determined. Model has been presented to multiple research groups and at conferences.

Title ITHIM
Description ITHIM refers to a range of related models and tools developed at CEDAR to perform integrated assessment of the health effects of transport scenarios and policies at the urban and national level. The health effects of transport policies are modelled through the changes in physical activity, road traffic injury risk, and exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air pollution. Some versions of ITHIM also predict changes in CO2 emissions. ITHIM is being used in research and by health and transport professionals to estimate the health impacts of scenarios, compare the impact of travel patterns in different places, and model the impact of interventions. ITHIM works either as a stand-alone model, or it can be linked with other models (e.g. transport, health, economic).
Type Of Material Computer model/algorithm
Year Produced 2012
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact Fed into transport plans in London, California and Portland. ITHIM has is being used in research projects in Brazil, India, and Malaysia. It has been sent to research & practitioner groups in Ireland, Taiwan, Singapore, Canada, and multiple groups in the US. It has been used to generate results for reports (for British Cycling and CTC) that have attracted media and parliamentary attention.

About the Millennium Cohort Study:
The Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a multi-disciplinary research project following the lives of around 19,000 children born in the UK in 2000-01. It is the most recent of Britain's world-renowned national longitudinal birth cohort studies. The study has been tracking the Millennium children through their early childhood years and plans to follow them into adulthood. MCS's field of enquiry covers such diverse topics as parenting; childcare; school choice; child behaviour and cognitive development; child and parental health; parents' employment and education; income and poverty; housing, neighbourhood and residential mobility; and social capital and ethnicity."

Results and Impact 40 participants (a mixture of academics, WHO officers, and other stakeholders) took part in a one and a half day workshop. I also participated in the smaller closed group session of around 10 people on the afternoon of day 2. We made decisions on the next version of the HEAT tool, including changing the dose response curve shape, the relative risks used, and the statistical value of a human life.

The HEAT tool is intended as a simple model for use by in policy formulation and by practitioners. The tool and values from it is widely used in policy formulation (including by the UK Department of Transport), by practitioners (e.g. Sustrans in the UK), and in academic papers. This workshop has led to changes in the values used in the tool. My own more sophisticated (and hence more complicated and with greater data requirements) health model (ITHIM) was used as a comparative model.
