Business Creation in the UK

Abstract
We will construct and analyse a population-wide dataset of firm creation in the UK using Companies House administrative data. We will use this data to understand the economic implications of COVID-19 on geographic regions and economic sectors of the UK. An important advantage of our project is that it provides a real-time snapshot of the state of the economy based on the entire company register for the UK economy. This coverage avoids underrepresentation or bias implicit in existing survey-based approaches. Our data can be broken down at the regional or industrial level and we can inspect the effects on business creation at a daily, weekly or monthly frequency. This coverage and granularity is our main value-added.
