Title | Data use Register - SAIL Databank |
Description | Data use registers are part of ensuring public trust and acceptability in the transparent use of public data for research. An additional benefit is that they are an effective resource for data owners, researchers and funders to see what datasets have been made available for research by a trusted research environment. |
Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
Year Produced | 2022 |
Provided To Others? | Yes |
Impact | Impact will be recorded in 2024 Research Fish submission. Public engagement case study on the impact and value of data use registers is being developed. |
URL | https://saildatabank.com/data/data-use-register/ |
Title | Federated Data Analysis Model |
Description | A model of federated data analysis has been developed during the grant period. This mechanism allows data centres around the UK to have data queried by researchers without data leaving their safe havens. The development of this approach will seek to address the common governance barriers to sharing of datasets across jurisdictions and will allow researchers to analyse a greater range of data. The model is being refined and is supported by funding in 2023 from the DARE UK programme. |
Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
Year Produced | 2022 |
Provided To Others? | No |
Impact | The model is being proven currently in the DARE UK funding with partner data centres. |
Title | Phenomics Library |
Description | Building on a pilot - The Phenotype Library developed by SAIL Databank is a platform to host phenotyping algorithms and harness their power for research. The aim is to provide researchers with the "GitHub of phenotyping": an open platform for creation, storage, dissemination, re-use, evaluation, and citation of curated algorithms and metadata. The goal is for this to be a place where researchers can share their own work, benefit from what others have shared, and even build new collaborations. |
Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
Year Produced | 2022 |
Provided To Others? | Yes |
Impact | A growing development of phenotypes, concepts that are actively used by the research community and the ability for researchers to actively contribute new types arising from their work. |

Title | Rapid cohort identification system |
Description | The tool will allow rapid identification of cohorts from population level data for the following purposes: 1. Identification of clinical trial participants (not disclosed at individual level, it provides a feasibility assessment that a viable cohort exists within a geography) 2. Identification of groups with specific characteristics (not disclosed at individual level) The purpose of the tool is to allow a rapid assessment of the size of a pre defined group within a population that have specific societal status and/or health issues. It will operate as an information and feasibility tool. It has been funded by Welsh Government to build on work that was undertaken to identify specific groups that were at risk during the pandemic. |
Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
Year Produced | 2022 |
Provided To Others? | No |
Impact | The Beta model has just been developed and is undergoing testing, impacts will be reported in the next submission. |
Title | Statistical Disclosure Control System |
Description | Statistical Disclosure control (SDC) is a managed process where researchers request outputs (such as charts/graphs) from the research within a secure environment. These outputs are then reviewed by 2 senior analysts to check for any small numbers or potential risks of identification of people. Previously this was a manual process that relied on the two reviewers to obtain, assess and return reviews. The new system error traps any potential issues, is auditable, allows a greater tracking of workload and provides the reviewers a much more structured environment to assess outputs and thus is more efficient for staff and researchers who are awaiting outputs. |
Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
Year Produced | 2022 |
Provided To Others? | No |
Impact | Reviews are now undertaken faster - Allowing the KPI of 'Reviews to be completed in 2 days' to be tracked Reviews can be shared amongst team members more easily to help with developing new SDC checkers Easier to identify common issues and communicate solutions to the research base Human error is mitigated (no accidental approval) |

Description | Welsh Government Covid Evidence Centre |
Organisation | Bangor University |
Country | United Kingdom |
Sector | Academic/University |
PI Contribution | From March 2020 to present, SAIL has undertaken a vast range of research under the collaborative 'One Wales' banner which includes HDR UK, SAIL, ADR UK, NCS funded research centres. This work is now delivered partially through the Covid Evidence centre, where SAIL/ADR provides the infrastructure and three research posts as well as the NCS investment The Covid Evidence centre focusses research resource onto pandemic research, previously to the setup of the centre, research was dispersed. The contribution made builds on the collaborative work over the pandemic which is outlined by a statement from the CMO Wales Sir Frank Atherton 'On my own behalf and that of the Welsh Government, I write to offer our thanks for the support offered by the SAIL team and partners in aiding our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Welsh Government has benefitted enormously from its partnership with the SAIL databank to date, and this is no better exemplified than through the relationship with the Technical Advisory Group who are responsible to the Welsh Government for developing and interpreting the scientific and technical advice relating to the pandemic. From the earliest days of the pandemic, the One Wales team approach to developing data resources and analysis, coordinated by SAIL colleagues, has been immensely helpful. These contributions have meant we have been able to: · Provide a better understanding and interpretation of the epidemiology of the virus in Wales, the UK and in a global context. · Provide advice on appropriate interventions to protect the wellbeing of the Welsh people during the COVID-19 pandemic · Advise on potential implications for current and planned interventions. Many of our insights would not have been so timely had we not spent the last decade investing in such excellent high-performance computing and data sharing, and it would be fitting for everyone involved in the One Wales approach to be recognised for their contributions. I understand that you are considering nominating the team for the Swansea University awards for researchers and I fully endorse such a recommendation. My thanks to you and the team for your unstinting support throughout the pandemic' Sir Frank Atherton Chief Medical Officer/Medical Director NHS Wales - January 28th, 2022 |
