| Impact | The New Urbanisms, New Citizens project team have been asked to prepare findings reports for three community organisations preparing bids for capital projects to develop play provision for children and young people in case study communities. These findings reports have formed the evidence base for applications for funding from BiffaWard (£49,000), Kettering Borough Council (£7,000) and Northampton Borough Council (£6,700). These bids for funding are currently awaiting decisions. Letters of support from community organisations indicate the significant extent to which the new Urbanisms, New Citizens project has impacted upon local communities by providing a powerful evidence base for such applications. |

| Description | The NUNC project used a series of qualitative and mobile mapping tools to explore children's experiences of everyday live in new urban communities in the UK. The 'My Week' tool was originally developed from the ESRC project 'Changing Times: Children's Understanding and Perception of the Social Organisation of Time', University of Hull. This methodology was first published by Christensen and James (2008). The combination of ethnography, GPS, mobile technology and guided tours was first developed in a project funded by the Danish Research Council on 'Children, Mobility and Urban Space: a project about the influence of the environment on children's physical activity' and published by Christensen et al. (2011) and Mikkelsen and Christensen (2009). |

| Impact | In subsequent research, informed by NUNC was designed by Dr Sophie Hadfield Hill for her innovative 'Map my Community' app to capture data on young people and their families' mobilities, their access to services and everyday experience of their local environment (the app has three features 'Map my week / Capture that / Explore that space). The app was developed as part of the New Urbanisms in India project (funded by the ESRC) and has since been used by a national NGO in India in their participatory planning with children. The app is currently being used in informal settlements across Delhi to campaign for change. |

| PI Contribution | Visiting Scholarship in October 2015 I was pleased to accept an invitation to visit the University of Sassari in Italy. The visit entailed a programme of academic and public discussions, exchanges and activities concerning the principles of restorative practices and the restorative city. The main focus of these discussions, and my particular expertise and contribution to them, was to explore intergenerational and spatial aspects of restorative practices, including the experience and use of space, and the importance of place to community identity and well-being. The underlying notion was that space could play an important part in shaping people's responses and attitudes to restorative practices. I gave a number of lectures to graduate and doctoral students and staff; exchanges with researchers in Psychology and Law; meetings in the prison and Town Hall of Tempio Pausania and Rebibbia Prison (Roma). A large number of more informal discussions also took place. The latter part of my visit was dedicated to develop and write a research proposal with Prof. Patrizii and team that has been submitted to the Fondazione Banco. This proposal, entitled "Restorative practices, Use of public space and Well-being of Community", will address how children and young people participate in the development of their communities and how their perspectives can inform the creation of a restorative city for all. The proposed interdisciplinary and mixed method project will investigate young people's use of public spaces; intra- and intergenerational relationships and perceptions of space; and the construction of successful ways of living together within shared spaces. Mounting simultaneous research in Leeds and Sardinia is an on-going aim of continuing work together. I am currently engaged in discussions with Leeds City Council about how this could be accomplished. Together with my Sardinian colleagues I will explore further European possibilities. It was an intellectually stimulating and highly productive visit. |

The paper argues that young peopel are crucial to the vitality of the public realm. Through their extensive outdoor activities (playing, walking, cycling, making and meeting friends) they are very active in building and maintaining communities in development - arguably much more so than many adult residents. |
