Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Exploitation Route The work carried out within the Fellowship has already had impact. For example, a recent paper (Barbara Prainsack, and Alena Buyx. 2013. A solidarity-based approach to the governance of research biobanks. Medical Law Review [online first: doi 10.1093/medlaw/fws040]) has been taken up by the TwinsUK database in London who are implementing it. Moreover, the Brocher Foundation selected the topic of 'solidarity in bioethics' as the topic of a symposium that they hosted in Geneva in March 2013; the symposium was chaired by Barbara Prainsack (http://www.brocher.ch/en/events/solidarity-towards-new-solutions-in-the-bioethics-of-biobanking-biosecurity-and-health-inequalities/). The symposium brought together academics, practitioners, and policy makers working on these issues. The grant holder has published a number of articles on the basis of the work carried out in the context of the fellowship, which together with the Report have found wide resonance in academic circles internationally. They have triggered commentary and critique (eg http://phe.oxfordjournals.org/content/5/1/1.short), and the grant holder has received numerous invitations to present this work at academic conferences and workshops.

Most recently, an updated translation of our Solidarity report (the primary outcome of the Fellowship) was published in German, and a new book on the topic will be published by Cambridge University Press later in 2016 (Solidarity in Biomedicine and Beyond, with Alena Buyx).

Description The approach developed in the context of this framework has been used by national Bioethics Councils in several countries. Since 2017 I am also a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies, partly due to my reputation as an expert on solidarity.

PI Contribution Alena Buyx and I have published together on solidarity, and recently signed a book contract with Cambridge University Press for a (two author) monograph building on our AHRC/ESRC funded project on solidarity. The book is scheduled to be out in 2016.

Impact All our papers published in recent years (they are listed under project outputs). We were also recently awarded a grant by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (as a spin-off of our collaboration on solidarity). The research will explore empirical and conceptual aspects of the participatory turn in health research as well as the ethical, societal, and regulatory aspects of 'citizen science' in the health domain.
