Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The research looked at different ways to mathematically model the relationship between transport poverty and social disadvantages. It found that the standard models and datasets traditionally used by transport policymakers could readily be adapted to identify these influence of a lack of transport on people's trip making patterns. This could be found at the national and local level of analysis. However, when people on low incomes live in close proximity to good public transport services and a range of different economic and social opportunities, they appear to adopt the same trip making patterns as their counterparts in the average population. Recent analysis using GWR techniques has found that local environmental factors are highly influential in determining why people do or don't travel, especially the density of the walking network and availability of bus services.
Exploitation Route They have led to several publications and have also contributed to workshops and teaching sessions for an EU COST Action project TU1209 on Transport Equity Assessment. They are currently being used in a further proposal in this same area of social research in transport, but focusing this time on future transport technologies and mobility landscapes to 2040, which is currently being prepared for submission to the EPSRC

Description The research collaboration has led to further work for the Welsh Government to undertake a social assessment of the A465 road by-pass project in South Wales. It has also led to a secondment to Highways England for Lucas to act as an advisor to the Community Impacts Team for the Lower Thames Crossing project funded through Arcadis consultancy.

Title Merseyside model
Description The model geographically weights the travel behaviours of individuals at the micro-scale of their local neighbourhoods. The dataset is specific to Merseyside but the model could be adapted for use within any local area where there is suitable data available.
Type Of Material Model of mechanisms or symptoms - human
Provided To Others? No
Impact None as yet, e are waiting to publish the results at present.
