Emerging Minds: Action for Child Mental Health

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Experimental Psychology

Abstract

Approximately one in ten children and young people have a diagnosable mental health problem. Mental health problems in childhood and adolescence bring significant emotional, social, and educational disadvantage and present a risk for ongoing mental health problems in adulthood. As such, recent influential policy documents (including Future in Mind, The Five Year Forward View for Mental Health, Transforming children and young people's mental health provision: A green paper) highlight the need to prioritise the promotion of good mental health and the prevention of and early intervention for mental health difficulties in children and young people

Our vision is to see the number of children and young people who experience mental health problems halved within 20 years. The best way to meet this ambitious goal is to make full use of what is already known from developmental psychopathology research and to draw on knowledge and expertise from other disciplines to establish the best ways to enable this research to reach and benefit large numbers of children, young people and families.

In terms of mental health promotion, research has identified robust predictors of the emergence and persistence of mental health problems in children and young people. However, considerable challenges remain in the implementation of this knowledge to promote good mental health and prevent mental health difficulties among children and young people, including barriers associated with stigma and a lack of sustainable and scalable methods of delivery.

In terms of early intervention, child and adolescent mental health research has also had success in the development of effective interventions for common mental health problems, however only a small minority of children and young people with mental health conditions receive effective support. Furthermore, even where children meet thresholds for referral to specialist mental health services, they frequently experience long delays in accessing care.

This Network will facilitate novel research to increase the reach of effective mental health promotion, and prevention of and early intervention for mental health problems across a range of settings. We will bring together academics from health research, arts, design, humanities and physical science disciplines in order to develop creative, sustainable stakeholder-led solutions based on an understanding of, for example, what has made health messages 'stick' (medical history, design theory, history of design); where, in what format and how to present information and interventions at scale in ways that maintain trust and security (media, sociology, information design, computer science). The Network will include a broad range of stakeholders, including children, young people and carers with relevant lived experience, third sector partners, practitioners, policy makers, heritage professionals and industrial partners. This will ensure that the research reflects the needs of potential beneficiaries and the current practical and policy context and that solutions are developed that are scalable and sustainable to promote widespread dissemination.

Planned Impact

The ultimate beneficiaries of this Network will be children, young people and those who care for them. They will benefit from the increased reach of developmental psychopathology research to improve access to effective means to promote positive mental health and prevent and treat mental health problems. Our aim is to provide a catalyst for research that halves the number of children and young people who experience ongoing mental health problems within 20 years, and brings broader impacts on society through improved life chances for children and young people (e.g. educational and occupational) and reduced costs to society (e.g. through health care needs that may otherwise persist in to adulthood).

The Network will also bring benefits to policy makers, commissioners, practitioners, third sector organisations and industrial partners who will benefit from the provision of knowledge, guidance and tools to promote good mental health and interventions to prevent and treat child and adolescent mental health problem in ways that are scalable and sustainable.

Through our partnership with the Museum of Mental Health, we will also bring new perspectives to bear on historic collections related to mental health, facilitating a deeper understanding of their significance for curatorial staff, visitors and, through professional networks, the wider museums and heritage sector. This will enhance the current activities of the National Alliance of Museums, Health and Wellbeing, enabling interaction between academics, clinicians and heritage professionals and adding to the 'everyday' wellbeing agenda of the Alliance by focusing on complex clinical contexts and the ways in which historic objects and records might be mobilized to ensure better access to mental health support.

In the short term, the main direct impacts from the proposed Network include:
(i) Policymakers, third sector organisations and practitioners will have the opportunity to interact with academics from diverse backgrounds to develop creative solutions to the current difficulties they face and engage in research grant applications that advance policy and practice.
(ii) Industrial partners (including design practitioners, technology providers) will have the opportunity to interact with academics from diverse backgrounds to develop creative solutions to industrial/ commercial problems, to develop intellectual property, and engage in research grant applications that advance commercialisation opportunities.
(iii) Heritage professionals will have the opportunity to engage with academics, experts by experience, practitioners and policy makers to explore how historic collections can inspire policy change and initiatives designed to improve mental health and wellbeing.

We will measure our success in achieving these short-term impacts by recording the number of joint applications for research projects that include academics and policy makers, third sector organisations, practitioners, industrial partners, and/or heritage professionals. This will include applications to our research development fund and for externally funded research projects and studentships. We will also record ways in which network activities and outputs and activities have influenced policy, practice and commercial opportunities, for example, policy and community initiatives, creation of intellectual property.

In addition to the impacts outlined above, we also expect that we will facilitate research that has far broader impacts. It is impossible to state exactly how these diverse projects will move beyond our whole-Network ambitions, however, through judicious selection and support we will ensure that the network activities help realise our ultimate goal of reducing the proportion of children who experience ongoing mental health problems. We outline our approach in the Pathway to Impact section.

Description In early 2019, we worked with our charity partners the Centre for Mental Health and YoungMinds to engage children, young people, parents , carers, policy makers, and practitioners to identify their priorities for child and adolescent mental health research. The four research challenges that were identified can be found here: https://emergingminds.org.uk/research/

Between 2019 and 2022, we have delivered a programme of work to encourage and enable research and build research capacity to address these research challenges. We were not funded to conduct research directly ourselves but have supported a number of ongoing projects that are addressing the priorities. In particular:

We delivered 4 funding calls focused on questions relevant to our research challenges, for example:

What is the impact of racism on the mental health of children & young people in the UK?

What interventions will be effective in addressing racism in ways that will benefit children and young people's mental health?

Why even when we know 'what works' isn't this necessarily implemented in policy and practice?

How do we improve evidence-based decision making? E.g. How can we successfully inform commissioning decisions and policy making and how can we ultimately increase implementation of research into practice?

https://emergingminds.org.uk/third-funding-call/

https://emergingminds.org.uk/second-funding-call/

We supported 18 different research teams, the vast majority led by early career researchers across 17 Higher Education Institutions https://emergingminds.org.uk/funding-recipients/

We have offered training and opportunities for early career researchers to build their capacity. This included 4 cross sector placements with voluntary sector organisations, 5 research internships and a number of workshops specifically for ECRs. In 2022, we also launched the Grow Researcher Development programme.

https://emergingminds.org.uk/cross-sector-placements/

https://emergingminds.org.uk/internships/

https://emergingminds.org.uk/grow-researcher-development-programme/

Finally, we have also supported a number of activities to foster collaboration across a range of expertise, sectors, experience and disciplinary backgrounds. In particular supporting 19 Special Interest Research Groups.

https://emergingminds.org.uk/special-interest-research-groups/
Exploitation Route Each of the cross-sector placements, special interest research groups and research projects that we have supported has resulted in specific findings, recommendations and next steps. We have detailed as many of these as possible on our website and in our final reports. In particular, our Emerging Minds Summit in October 2022 was specifically organised to enable all the outcomes of the Emerging Minds network to be shared and showcased with over 300 delegates https://emergingminds.org.uk/summit/

The research challenges that we identified and have addressed throughout the funding period remain important and urgent to address. We have produced a report to further encourage mental health researchers to continue to focus on these research challenges.

The Pilot Grow Researcher Development programme has been take on by the Mental Health Research Incubator and the NIHR/Department of Health and Social Care are funding further cohorts of ECRs in this programme. https://mentalhealthresearch.org.uk/grow/

Description We were not funded to conduct research ourselves however our network work has levered further funding which has had non academic impacts. To date our most direct non-academic impacts of research have come from the Co-SPACE & Co-SPYCE studies which have been providing regular reports online and directly to over 170 policy, health, education, and practice organisations, in addition to our wider network. The findings have been included in the Public Health England COVID-19 mental health and wellbeing surveillance report, have been regularly reported in the media, cited in Parliament, have directly influenced policy initiatives (including the Public Health England Every Mind Matters campaign, and the Department for Education Wellbeing for Education Return programme) and were widely cited in the Department for Education State of the Nation report 2020.

We subsequently hired Rowan Streckfuss Davis (a Masters student) and Felicity Hudson (who had just finished a Masters). We introduced them through a blog they co-wrote on our website, and via our social media and e-newsletter. They helped coordinate workshops, bookings, resources, and advertising films for the Summit. In terms of individual projects, Felicity took a lead on building the Summit section of our website showcasing outputs from the event (https://emergingminds.org.uk/summit/), whilst Rowan synthesised reflections from delegates on the next steps for children and young people's mental health research into a report (https://emergingminds.org.uk/summit-next-steps/). The duo also wrote a blog for the Mental Health Research Incubator on attending research conferences as an early career researcher (see separate output).

Results and Impact On 17 October 2022 we held our Big Emerging Minds Summit in person and online. We wanted to make the content of the day accessible to those who could not attend the live event, and to that end worked with the Mental Elf to recruit and train a team of "Beyond the Room" live tweeters. The team of 7 collaborated with workshop leaders in advance of the Summit to collate key messages and resources from the workshops and plan tweet threads. On the day, members of the Beyond the Room team then attended the workshops they had prepared, and gave a live synopsis of the workshop presentation, discussion, and activities using their Twitter accounts and tagging our event hashtag #EmergingMinds. We had live coverage of almost the entire programme (consisting of the opening and closing plenaries, 24 workshops, and an exhibition), and significant engagement with the live tweeting online. We also compiled all the live tweet threads and embedded them onto our Summit website after the event, onto each of the relevant workshop pages.

We also tweeted Conversation Starters inviting people to share their experiences, frustrations, best practice, and barriers to engaging with policy. Our GROW Researcher Development Programme workshop focused on the topic (see separate output) and members of the GROW programme held an open conversation as part of our Twitter campaign. Similarly, we held a related Open Lab to finish the week (see separate output) and shared advice from it on breaking down barriers to engaging with policy. Results and Impact Our Language, Communications & Mental Health Special Interest Research Group released their final report and supporting video. Through workshops and surveys the SIRG found two key questions people wanted research to answer: 1) what is the relationship between language and mental health? and 2) how can we develop clinical practice to improve outcomes for children and young people? The group hopes the report will be used by researchers far and wide to provide a solid foundation to their bids for research funding in this area. We hosted the report on our website, and shared it via our social media & e-newsletter.

Results and Impact On 9 November 2021 we hosted a 1-hour 'closed conversation' / structured Q&A event for coordinators of our Special Interest Research Groups (SIRGs) to meet with the main mental health research funders. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Wellcome Trust, Medical Research Council, MQ Mental Health, ESRC, and NIHR, and chaired by Emerging Minds Leadership Team members Professor Ann John and Professor Sarah Halligan. SIRG coordinators and funders discussed current priority areas for children and young people's mental health, and considered how these align with funders' current and planned programmes. Each SIRG coordinator had prepared a 1-2 slide summary of their research priorities for inclusion in a pack sent to funders before the meeting. As a result of the meeting at least one coordinator was invited to share a proposal with one of the funding bodies in attendance.

Results and Impact In July 2022 we held our fourth and final funding call where we offered a small amount of funding (between £250-£3,000) to those who had been supported by the Network over the last four years, to move their research forward. We had a wide range of applications from across our funded projects, Special Interest Research Groups, cross-sector placement participants, and GROW programme early career researchers. We awarded a total of £25,000 between 10 projects. This included offering funding to five new projects, all led by members of our GROW early career researcher development programme. We were also able to offer additional funding to five projects we have been supporting over the last few years. This webpage provides information on the funding call and projects funded. We promoted all the projects - new and existing - who had received funding through this Research Development Fund via our e-newsletters & social media. (Individual project information for the 10 projects awarded funding is listed under "Other Outputs/Outcomes")

Results and Impact On 17 October 2022 we held our Big Emerging Minds Summit in person at St Catherine's College in Oxford. The Summit aimed to bring together a cross-sector audience of all those who had been involved in the Network over its 4-year life, to celebrate its achievements and progress in the field of children and young people's mental health research, and feel inspired about their own and our collaborative next steps. The event was targeted at a very broad audience, mirroring the wider Network, including young people, parents & carers with lived experience, policy makers, practitioners, funders & commissioners, early career researchers, academics, and third sector organisations. The day was structured around our 4 research challenges which were developed by lived experience experts and other stakeholders at the start of the Network (https://emergingminds.org.uk/our-research-challenges/), and have underpinned all the work of the Network since. The in-person event was attended by nearly 250 people, with representation from all our target audiences, including at least 10 young people with lived experience. The day included an opening plenary, 24 workshops spread across 4 slots, a closing plenary, exhibition, and live photography and artwork. The 24 workshops were entirely built and led by people and projects supported through Emerging Minds (e.g. through research projects, Special Interest Research Groups, cross-sector placements, GROW early career research development programme, interns). Workshop leaders showcased findings, aired challenges, and used the collective experiences of Summit delegates to plan next steps for research. (https://emergingminds.org.uk/summit-workshops/). The broad range of topics included, for example: considering the needs of parents and carers of young people with mental health difficulties; the impact and importance of co-production; experiences of Black researchers in mental health and racism research; creative therapies for self harm; designing your dream school for mental health. In the closing plenary we asked delegates to use "Next Steps footprints" to reflect on their own, and our collective, next steps, based on their experiences at the Summit (https://emergingminds.org.uk/summit-next-steps/). Our intern Rowan subsequently analysed these reflections to produce a summary and report (see separate output). We also hosted 16 exhibits in our parallel exhibition which showcased academic posters, artwork, and multimedia focused on children & young people's mental health research. As a key aim of the day was networking and collaboration, workshops were encouraged to be interactive and include audience participation, we built in lengthy breaks for delegates to integrate, and we also provided a "Delegates Handbook" in the conference pack with biographies and contact details of all delegates who had given permission, so connections could be followed up afterwards. The feedback from the day was brilliant, with a particularly large engagement on Twitter through the day and afterwards (see #EmergingMinds), and a great deal of positivity on the future of children and young people's mental health research (see e.g. https://twitter.com/Fiyory_/status/1583172601198702592?s=20&t=nq-LLdSUMgvixOXvEX6_XQ and https://twitter.com/Kadra_A_/status/1582057947852836864?s=20&t=wVu5u3C0Al-Idm2Xli7oLg)

Results and Impact In April 2022 we launched our Big Emerging Minds Summit, our end-of-network conference to be held in October 2022. We worked with our Leadership Team and Advisory Group, including lived experience advisors, to develop the framework for the event, summed up in the tagline "Children and young people's mental health: From research to action". The key aim of the event was to bring together a cross-sector audience of all those who had been involved in the Network over its 4-year life, to celebrate its achievements and progress in the field of children and young people's mental health research, and feel inspired about their own and our collaborative next steps. The event was targeted at a very broad audience, mirroring the wider Network, including young people, parents & carers with lived experience, policy makers, practitioners, funders & commissioners, early career researchers, academics, and third sector organisations. We worked with external graphic designers and communications experts on our branding, resources, and communications strategy, in order to appeal to this broad audience most effectively. A core team of Emerging Minds staff met weekly to arrange the events, focusing on different areas like the Programme, Registration, Logistics, PPI Access, and Overall Event/Budget. We also appointed two Summit interns closer to the event. The public launch in April 2022 was hosted on a number of platforms including our website (this output), April e-newsletter Network News (see separate output) and via a Twitter advertising campaign (see separate output). At this stage we were taking expressions of interest for the event, to alert first when full registration opened later in the year. We also contacted key stakeholders personally to invite them to attend. The Summit section of our website became a key hub for the event, transitioning as needed from: 1) advertising and link to expressions of interest form, 2) registration information, 3) event information around accessibility, accommodation, and travel, 4) post-Summit outputs and legacy content. We had a hugely positive response to the launch, including over 200 people expressing interest in attending.

Results and Impact On 17 October 2022 we held our Big Emerging Minds Summit. The event was predominantly held in-person in Oxford (see separate output), but we also held a parallel Summit online to increase accessibility, supported and hosted by the Mental Elf. The online programme included both the opening and closing plenaries, and one workshop from each of the four Summit streams, which were based around our four research challenges ((https://emergingminds.org.uk/our-research-challenges/). The workshops were entirely built and led by people and projects supported through Emerging Minds, and included showcasing findings, airing challenges, and discussing next steps for the research alongside Summit delegates: 1) The implementation of evidence and research in children & young people's mental health, 2) Experiences of Black researchers: engaging with anti-racism in research, 3) How can we embrace complexity in neurodivergence and mental health amongst children & young people?, 4) Designing your dream school for good mental health (https://emergingminds.org.uk/summit-workshops/). Online delegates were able to engage with other aspects of the in-person Summit via our Beyond the Room team (see separate output). Just over 50 people attended at least some or all of the online Summit.

Keili gave a short presentation on how design research and practice has brought stakeholders together to explore children and young people's mental health, its challenges and possibilities. The presentation was followed by an activity-mediated discussion in small groups where we explored what our shared, collaborative working environment might be like.

Results and Impact Between April and October 2022 we hosted an advertising campaign for our Big Emerging Minds Summit on our Twitter channel @EmergingMindsUK. We worked with external graphic designers and communications experts on our branding and communications strategy, in order to appeal to our broad audience most effectively. We created a specific tweet card and GIF to share. The call to action for Phase 1 adverts was to encourage expressions of interest, whilst Phase 2 advertising was to transition these expressions of interest into confirmed registrations, and target new interest. We had over 200 expressions of interest, and a good engagement on Twitter with retweets and conversations between interested parties. Later in the year we advertised the 24 individual workshops using branded graphics.

Results and Impact In autumn 2022 we carried out interviews with the leaders of our four hybrid workshops for the Big Emerging Minds Summit. Though the majority of the event was to be in-person in Oxford, we also held a parallel online programme to include both plenaries and four of the workshops - one for each of the conference themes. These interviews were planned, carried out, and edited by one of our Summit interns, and supported by The Mental Elf. The films were then used as advertising on our Twitter channel (@EmergingMindsUK) and the Mental Elf's (@Mental_Elf) in order to encourage further registrations for the online Summit. Example given is for the "Bridging the Gap" project and workshop. The films were also embedded into the Summit hub on our website and are a key part of the legacy outputs from these four workshops, covering the content of the workshops themselves as well as the findings and next steps from the research projects they relate to.

Results and Impact So'ME T1ME is one of the six successfully funded projects from our first funding call (https://emergingminds.org.uk/funding-call/). Projects began in Spring 2021, and are to be completed by July 2022 at the latest. This project is led by a team of diabetes researchers and clinicians at Queen's University Belfast, Steno Diabetes Centre Copenhagen, and NUI Galway. The aim of the project is to get a better understanding of young people with Type 1 diabetes' experiences of social media and to explore the helpful and less helpful aspects of this online world. Ultimately, they want to gather information to support the safety of young people with T1D online and to build resilience to deal with hurtful or unpleasant social media content. The project is led by Dr Emma Berry, and outputs are ongoing but so far include: 1) an oral presentation at the TRIUMPH Children & Young people's mental health Early Career Researcher Forum on 24 September 2021 [see separate output for our involvement in this], and 2) an academic poster at the Psychosocial Aspects of Diabetes (PSAD) study group 2021 Conference, where Emma was a finalist for best quality poster.

Results and Impact We hosted 16 exhibits at our Big Emerging Minds Summit in October 2022, including academic posters, artwork, and multimedia focused on children & young people's mental health research, as an avenue for delegates to exchange ideas and build collaborations. We prioritised submissions from early career researchers, and many of the exhibits were also by people who had been involved in the Emerging Minds Network (e.g. (this creative output from one of the research projects we funded https://emergingminds.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/03.-Diabetes-Cyberspace.1.7.2.pdf). There were a wide range of styles presented including more interactive exhibits in line with the Summit's participation ethos, such as including post-it note questions to answer, or toolkits and resources to use after the Summit. A key cross-cutting theme was co-production alongside young people and families with lived experience (e.g. https://emergingminds.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/05.-BTG-Youth-Parent-Involvement-Poster.pdf and https://emergingminds.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/01.-The-What-matters-to-Who-in-mental-health-research-with-young-people-poster.pdf). Results and Impact We hosted 24 workshops as part of our programme for the Big Emerging Minds Summit in October 2022. The workshops were led by people and projects supported through Emerging Minds (e.g. through research projects, Special Interest Research Groups, cross-sector placements, GROW early career research development programme, interns). Workshop leaders showcased findings, aired challenges, and used the collective experiences of Summit delegates to plan next steps for research. Delegates had the opportunity to attend four workshops on the day itself. We wanted everyone, whether or not they attended, to have the opportunity to engage with the topics from all the workshops on the day, and so we have built a dedicated workshops space as part of our Summit hub on our website. This is a compilation page of all the workshops from our Big Emerging Minds Summit, allowing navigation to each individual workshop's own dedicated page. Each individual page includes as applicable: presentation slides, PDFs of resources, live tweet threads from our Beyond the Room team (see separate output), videos, photographs, and reflective artwork. The broad range of topics included, for example: considering the needs of parents and carers of young people with mental health difficulties; the impact and importance of co-production; experiences of Black researchers in mental health and racism research; creative therapies for self harm; designing your dream school for mental health. An example of individual workshop pages relates to each Summit theme are listed as separate outputs, and we have shared all the workshop pages widely via our e-newsletter and social media channels.

Results and Impact We were lucky to have some amazing artists join us at our Big Emerging Minds Summit in October 2022 to capture the day including: Tom (@tombaileyart), who captured discussions through illustration; Maciek from Oxford Atelier, who took amazing photos for us; and Conor (@conorofficiel, strangeworld11.com) and Ronni (@projectrnz) from Fully Focused Productions, who sketched through the day, and also created artwork afterwards based on their experiences at the Summit. We have integrated all their artwork and photography through the Summit section of the website, but felt it was important to host this separate creative space on the website as well. We shared this page via our e-newsletter and social media, and much of the artwork has been incorporated in other legacy outputs such as our Research Challenges and Impact Reports.

Results and Impact During the closing plenary of our Big Emerging Minds Summit in October 2022, we asked delegates to use footprint cut-outs to share reflections, hopes, and ideas for our collective next steps in children's and young people's mental health research. Our Summit intern Rowan analysed the collective Next Steps to identify the main themes that came up when thinking about what we, as researchers, young people, families, clinicians, practitioners, commissioners, and policy-makers can do for the future. Findings were collated into a report (forthcoming, 2023) and summarised on this webpage in an accessible way, which we shared via our e-newsletter and social media.

Results and Impact On Thursday 21 February 2021, the Emerging Minds Network held a workshop with those who support children & young people affected by racism to set priorities on how to tackle our Voices, Power & Attitudes Research challenge. We were focusing on the question, 'Racism and the mental health of children & young people: what do we need to know to make a difference?'

This workshop was hosted by Professor Ann John, who is a professor of Public Health & Psychiatry at Swansea University and a member of the Emerging Minds Network leadership team.

We had over 50 participants including educators, youth workers, mental health practitioners and researchers from a range of organisations, including: Youth Access, Barnardos, Angelou Centre, Bridge for Children, Mind, Young Minds, Partnership for Children, the Centre for Society and Mental Health, Glasgow Calendonian University, University of Nottingham, Liverpool John Moore's University & Roehampton university amongst others.

We were also very pleased to be joined by young artists Ronni Winter, Conor Powell and Selorm R Q A from our partners Fully Focused productions. They were able to produce a visual response to our discussions and have kindly agreed to share their artwork as part of the session's findings.
