Abstract

Under the theme of Energy, Materials Development and Nanotechnology, ARUA CoE-MEN will use materials and nanotechnology to develop energy solutions for Africa, as well as materials development for efficiency and sustainability, and also develop personnel. The main aim is to develop materials and new technologies to benefit Africa, in both infrastructure and human development, to enable global competition. There will be a range of projects around the technological use of materials, from fundamental to devices up to prototype level and application. The projects should help to identify, and later develop, new opportunities in an African context. This is necessary because often solutions from more temperate climates cannot withstand the harsher conditions in Africa (higher temperatures and humidity), and so are not suitable. This will facilitate the development of new opportunities in an African context (e.g. sustainable manufacturing, off-grid energy technologies, improved materials, and materials recycling - obtaining more useful materials, as well as removing waste), developing the people to do it, and to help Africa become more competitive. ARUA CoE-MEN will investigate barriers to upscaling and uptake of sustainable technologies in Africa. As well as improving materials, strategies for creating and encouraging new technological pathways to facilitate transitions to sustainability in emerging water and energy technologies will be explored. Improved energy security will help the economies develop, leading to more stability with jobs, facilite people to become entrepreneurs, and help to improve the welfare and the wealth of citizens in the different countries.
Some of projects target efficiency of materials and hence safety, e.g. by improving buildings and infrastructure (recent flood damage in southern Africa has shown that houses need to be more robust). Improved materials could have even larger long-term benefits on the environment, and help to improve other living conditions, e.g. improving water storage efficiency and cleanliness by combatting corrosion. The potential benefit to the African countries is improved development, improved environments and better education, for researchers and more widely, for the public, by outreach.
ARUA CoE-MEN will also try to support more part-time higher degree students, who struggle to balance work, family and their research. This is an untapped source of students, and is an opportunity to increase the skills and work more closely with industry, and possibly entrepreneurs. The benefit to the UK is the strengthening of ties with the different African countries involved, and the potential to enter into business relationships for manufacturing in the future. The hub will be at the University of the Witwatersrand, which has a long-term history of running very successful networks and groups in materials science, and also provides world-class equipment and infrastructure to be shared.

Planned Impact

Beneficiaries?
The beneficiaries from the research are firstly the researchers and their students who will work on useful and relevant projects, and extend their expertise and experience. The students will also benefit because they will be trained to undertake cutting-edge research, so that they can publish widely and grow their careers. But the programme is much wider; it seeks solutions to many problems holding Africa back, and which affect much of its population. If successful, the projects will have a wide impact across many different levels of the populations in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda.

How will they benefit from this research?
The projects have high potential of succeeding, because the researchers include many different disciplines, with environmental scientists (with ecology and sustainability expertise) to help break through the implementation barriers. Sustainable electricity and water supply is very beneficial to Africa, because these depress living conditions, and unreliable electricity is also stalling economies. Lack of potable water is a huge health hazard, and there are many waterborne diseases in Africa. Making materials more efficient will help the economies, because much time and money is wasted rectifying the problems caused by unsuitable materials, or materials which have been processed incorrectly. Developing better materials and processes will help Africa become more competitive globally, giving good, exportable products, to increase income and boost the economies. Another large benefit will be from increasing recycling, which not only removes waste (a pollutant and health hazard), but also creates revenue. Recycling can improve building materials, giving safer housing. Outreach activities can show people how to improve their lives with fairly easy habits, e.g. recycling household waste to realise income, and simultaneously improving the environment, and the improved education of (even a small number) of young people will enable them to contribute to the economy.
Providing evidence of energy consumption, use and practice in local communities to national and regional policy makers will help regulation, governance and service delivery. Understanding efficiencies will benefit many stakeholders, e.g. governments, NGOs, aid agencies, and providers of energy and energy related services. The new international network will maximise opportunities to foster and share knowledge between countries: research knowledge and best practice working with non-academic partners. Active engagement with national funders throughout the project will help to ensure a sustainable legacy.
Social impacts will arise because the researchers will actively engage communities, agencies and local leaders to promote the development of appropriate energy solutions, and ensure these solutions are responsive to local needs. This will empower communities to voice their energy needs and aspirations, provide insights into local social practices and customs, facilitating the research team and local energy champions to promote responsible energy behaviour. Careful dissemination will increase knowledge and awareness of responsible energy consumption and production, impacting social practices and promoting sustainable behavior for positive environmental outcomes.

What will be done to ensure opportunities to benefit?
To ensure that people will benefit from the activities, there will be meetings with relevant stakeholders (local community, government, scientists etc.), and one part of the project is designed around meetings and implementation. This is a large part of the programme, and is totally different from the usual academic promulgation of the results in journals and conferences, which will also occur for some projects. Outreach activities will be run in the different African countries involved, and the courses given by the U. Pretoria participants will also help promulgate the project and the underlying science.

Description Over a number of different areas we are undertaking research, which all fits under the umbrella of Materials, Energy and Nanotechnology. Under materials, we are developing new materials (hence work on platinum alloys, titanium alloys), as well as the effect of different pocessing techniques, and we are developing those techniques as well as testing them: Laser Shick Peeniing. This is our largest collaboration within ARUA CoE-MEN, and involves serveral universities in the UK as well as entities in Souith Africa. The technology is being improved and tested all the time, and the aim is to move it to a higher technology readiness level. The phase diagram of the platinum-aluminium-niobium added to our knowledge of the platinumun-based alloys for high temperature use in agressive environments. Different ways of undertaking computation for materials are being developed, and materials are "tested" by computation, and the good one are then tested experiemntally.
Exploitation Route The most successful part of ARUA CoE-MEN is the laser shock peening, which already has an active consortium, even though it was severely held back by all the COVID-19 restrictions. Aleady, there are industrial partners in South Africa and universities in the UK as well as an airline manufacturer.
The knowledge of alloy development is available for other interested people - mainly researchers at this stage.
The computer codes for materials computation will be available to all (some are already).

Description We have stronger collaborations in place than we did before, because of the successful UKRI Capacity Building proposal. We are talking more with them, and have had two visits to Coventry University to discuss future plans, and one PhD graduate from Wits is now working there as a postdoc. Unfortunately, some of those personnel lost their positions shortly afterwards, and one has recently left. However, the laser shock peening work is ongoing, and the South Africans are reinvigorating the UK part of the network. This involves Prof. Fitzpatrick's group at Coventry, and structure a collaboration among us and Airbus, and maybe also Southampton, to investigate Cold Gas Spray for structural repairs. They also have contact with The Welding Institute to access cold spray units there. Prof. Polese is asking Airbus for some experimental funds. We have also published a few journal and conference papers, as well as two more book chapters in 2021, and one in 2022, two having a UK co-author. There has been work with the University of Birmingham, who have provided educational videos, We are having discussions with Coventry University for funding for joint collaborations, and are also seeking other opportunities. One important development is the ongoing discussions with the Institute of Physics (UK) who are looking to run a programme where Physics can be used in Energy and Climate Change. Potentially, the ARUA Centres of Excellence can play a large part in this. Under the Carnegie-ARUA Early Career Researcher initiative, we had identified a post doctorate fellow from Rwanda to come to Wits for 12 months to work, but he could only come for a month because Rwanda does not grant visas for their citizens to come to South Africa. ARUA negotiated with Carnegie to try to restructure this award for shorter preriods. The second postdoc fellow, this time from Kenya, is currently undertaking his post doc fellowship, and has successfully asked to have his grant changed to 12 months. He has already submitted a conference abstract.

There were two chapters in a books which is in press (Andy Watson was author who was at Coventry). They also enabled L.A. Cornish to give a talk at Sheffield University on 12 February 2020: "Titanium-based alloys with copper additions for dental applications". On 4 May 2022, Prof Cornish visited Coventry University, for a short presentation on ARUA CoE-MEN and her work on titanium-based alloys, followed by an open discussion with several researchers on potential collaboration and was given a mini-tour of the facilities. There was interest in collaboration. She met with post doc Dr Mitchell Leering, who obtained his PhD from Wits fairly recently, and who is part of Prof. Claudia Polese's (Wits) collaboration there.
Collaborator Contribution Prof. Mark Tyrer helped us connect with other potential collaborators. Prof. Andy Watson helped us become involved with the Ternary Alloy book, Volumes 20 and 21, and two chapters were written, one with him. I met him in 1999 and have been collaborating with him in different ways since 2000, and it was he who introduced us to Coventry University and Prof. Mark Tyrer. Prof. Andy Watson has also encouraged us to work more with IoM3, although this did not occur as the latter downgraded their activities in the appropriate area. A project was initiated at U. Nairobi to utilize quarry dust, thus removing waste and producing something useful. An attempt to get a collaboration within this project with a new academic at Wits was unsuccessful.
Impact Although the people have now left, due to cutbacks to to COVID-19, there were plans for a course on phase equilibria, and they helped to introduce us to other potential collaborators, which resulted in two book chapters published in 2021 (Andy Watson was author who was at Coventry), and also enabled L.A. On 4 May 2022, Prof Cornish visited Coventry University, for a short presentation on ARUA CoE-MEN and her work on titanium-based alloys, followed by an open discussion with several researchers on potential collaboration and was given a mini-tour of the facilities. There was interest in collaboration. She met with post doc Dr Mitchell Leering, who obtained his PhD from Wits fairly recently, and who is part of Prof. Claudia Polese's (Wits) collaboration there.
Collaborator Contribution Prof. Mark Tyrer helped us connect with other potential collaborators. Prof. Andy Watson helped us become involved with the Ternary Alloy book, Volumes 20 and 21, and two chapters were written, one with him. I met him in 1999 and have been collaborating with him in different ways since 2000, and it was he who introduced us to Coventry University and Prof. Mark Tyrer. Prof. Andy Watson has also encouraged us to work more with IoM3, although this did not occur as the latter downgraded their activities in the appropriate area. A project was initiated at U. Nairobi to utilize quarry dust, thus removing waste and producing something useful. An attempt to get a collaboration within this project with a new academic at Wits was unsuccessful.
Impact Although the people have now left, due to cutbacks to to COVID-19, there were plans for a course on phase equilibria, and they helped to introduce us to other potential collaborators, which resulted in two book chapters published in 2021 (Andy Watson was author who was at Coventry), and also enabled L.A. The projects include developing alloys for implants, improving materials by laser shock peening. L.A. Cornish visited Coventry University in February 2020, and discussed a joint course, as well as other potential collaborations. There were three book chapters (Andy Watson was author who was at Coventry). They also enabled L.A. Cornish to give a talk at Sheffield University on 12 February 2020: "Titanium-based alloys with copper additions for dental applications". The Universities of Botswana and Nairobi, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Nigeria are part of the group that are working on phase diagram research with Wits, and their personnel and students would have been recipients of the modelling workshop/course on alloy design using ab initio methods and/or CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams). The ARUA-UKRI intervention has given impetus to this work, and three papers on phase diagrams have been published or accepted recently. The phase diagram work is important because it underlies what is possible with alloy development. Prof. C. Polese has been working on laser shock peening with several universities: Coventry, Cranfield, Leicester, Mauritius and Southampton.
Collaborator Contribution Nelson Mandela University hosts the Centre for High Resolution Transmission Microscopy (CHRTEM) which has helped characterise samples and provide training. Cranfield University is part of the group working on Laser Shock Peening. Their role is to help prepare and study samples under different conditions and also student training and exchange was planned, and this is hoped to happen in the future, once COVID-19 restrictions have been reduced. Online work is also planned. The University of Southampton is part of the group working on Laser Shock Peening. Their role is to help prepare and study samples under different conditions and also student training and exchange was planned, and this is hoped to happen in the future, once COVID-19 restrictions have been reduced. Online work is also planned. In the past, there were several students supervised under AMSEN, and using the impetus of ARUA CoE-MEN in 2019 a paper was finalised and published by one of these students. University of Nairobi was one of the original partners in ARUA CoE-MEN, and has contributed from the beginning with work on aluminium alloys. The University of Nairobi was part of the ARUA Conference in Nairobi in November 2019 and contributed (remotely) to that in Pretoria 2021. Results and Impact Although no abstracts were submitted to the conference, because the work being done has little relevance for the theme of "Global Public Health Challenges: Facing Them in Africa", and two projects which could have been relevant were not yet initiated, a half-day workshop, was held, discussing current collaborations and potential collaborations, e.g. Brookhaven National Laboratories, USA. Presentations were also made by: Prof. Rading (University of Nairobi); Fildah Ayaa (Makerere University, Uganda, now studying at the University of Pretoria) and Dr Samuel Chigome (President of the AMRS).

Results and Impact For the first postdoc position, there were seven applicants, with two females, and most did not state that they would come to the Host University (Wits), with two applicants wanting to stay in their home universities, making them ineligible. One applicant was not from an ARUA university, which made her ineleigible. One applicant wanted to go from Wits to the University of Ghana, and was a good candidate. Another applicant wanted to go to UCT, which is not part of our network. The best candidate, Dr Joseph Nzabahimana, was from the University of Rwanda to Wits. He was hosted by Prof. Kenneth Ozoemena who also has a SARChI chair (South African Research Chair Initiative). Unfortunately, visa restrictions meant he could only come to South Africa for a month.
It would have been very beneficial if some of the UKRI funds could have been used to send the other good applicant, Siziwe Gqoba, from Wits to the University of Ghana to work with Dr David Dodoo-Arhin, but UKRI disallowed this.
In the 2nd round, Dr Francis Otieno was selected from four candidates, and even though not from an ARUA university, he was allowed to come to Wits to be hosted by Profs. Daniel Wamwangi and Rudolf Erasmus. His initial award was for 6 months, but permission was granted to extend it. He has submitted one conference abstract, and completed some papers from his earlier related work.

Results and Impact Profs. Quandt and Cornish are part of the Working Group which is to facilitate meaningful collaborations between the UK and Africa in Physics. There were meetings on 16 December 2021 (online - joined after the last ARUA Advisory Board Meeting), 21 January 2022 (online) 7 March 2022 (physical at Wits) and 17 March 2023 (online). There was also an online meeting on 15 March 2022 with Oxford Policy Management (OPM) to provide more background to help OPM draft the policy documents. The broad areas of Weather & Climate and Energy are still the target areas. The first part of the planning is now nearly completed and the IOP is now designing the overview phase. They plan to use some ARUA CoEs to help run the projects, and collaboration is expected across at least two African countries, as well as the UK.
The target countries are: Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda. The targets are: Academic and staff capital, Training and education pipeline, Large-scale research facilities, Research infrastructure, Gender inclusivity, Funders and partners, R&D and innovation outputs and Collaborations and networks. The first part of the planning is now nearly completed and the IOP is now designing the overview phase. They plan to use some ARUA CoEs to help run these, and collaboration is expected across at least two African countries, as well as the UK.

Results and Impact There were 27 individual presentations, from institutes in eleven African countries were represented (Bénin, Botswana, Côte d'Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan and Tunisia), as well as collaborators in five non-African countries (Canada, China, India, Korea and Malaysia). There were with the four plenary speakers. Questions were dealt with at the end in the wrap-up section, or in the chat box. All the presenters were sent electronic certificates of participation, as were the registered attendees. There were 200 unique viewers and the maximum was 117 at a given time. An electronic Book of Abstracts was compiled and shared on the site.

On 4 May 2022, Prof. Cornish visited Coventry University, for a short presentation on ARUA CoE-MEN followed by an open discussion with several researchers on potential collaboration and was given a mini-tour of the facilities. Results and Impact There had been prior contact with the University of Birmingham, and Prof. Cornish had been invited to give a talk in the Refractory Metals Symposium at the TMS 2022 Meeting in California in February 2022. She spoke about the technical aspect as well as describing ARUA CoE-MEN in her presentation. She also had a lunchtime meeting to discuss collaborative work with Dr Sandy Knowles and others in the refractory materials area.
On 5 May 2022, Prof. Cornish visited the University of Birmingham, was given a mini-tour of the facilities, met several researchers, including the Head of the School, Prof. A. Davenport, and gave a talk on developing titanium-based alloys with copper additions for dental applications. The talk also described ARUA CoE-MEN and raised much interest. She also had a lunchtime meeting to discuss collaborative work with Dr Sandy Knowles and Dr Sophie Cox. Dr A. Knowles agreed to make some videos, and has done so.

The Grant Proposal Writing Workshop was held on 24 October, and was presented by Dr Yolanda Davids, Dr Renee le Roux, Dr Duncan O. Mbuge and Dr Jean Paul Obiero. The Publication Writing Workshop was given by Prof. Elly Grossman, with Prof. Lesley Cornish and Prof. Michael Witcomb, who also read and critiqued the submitted work from the applicants. Results and Impact The workshop was opened by the Vice Chancellor in the company with the French Ambassador. It involved keynote presentations on "Strengthening research and innovation capacities in sustainable energy production from waste and biomass in response to global challenges" and Waste as a global challenge: two case studies in metal recovery and biodegradable electronics from organic waste. There was hands on practical sessions on techniques such as DFT/COMSOL/ABAQUS, MATLAB Coding, and 3-D Printing.
