Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Research Services Division

Abstract

Stem cells have captured the imagination of scientists and citizens alike because of their potential for treating injuries and disease. However, the biology of stem cells is complex, reflecting their role in maintaining body tissues through a continual, highly regulated process of self-renewal. Unravelling this complexity will require deeper insights into development and cell biology, genetics, molecular biology and other disciplines. The ultimate goal of harnessing this knowledge for patient applications requires a long-term commitment. It will involve studying multiple types of stem cells in considerable detail. The combined forces of basic stem cell biologists and clinician scientists needed to characterise stem cells and their differentiated progeny for medical applications have not yet been assembled elsewhere in the UK. The University of Cambridge is one of few places where this goal can be accomplished. Therefore, the Cambridge Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine is being established to achieve this purpose. Its three programmes will focus on pluripotent stem cells, cancer stem cells and neural repair. The Centre?s mission is to gain a greater understanding of the properties of these stem cells and to exploit them for patient benefits.

Technical Summary

The Cambridge Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine is being established to gain a greater understanding of the properties of stem cells and to exploit those properties for the benefit of patients. The strategy that will be used by the Centre to accomplish its mission is to define the properties of three major classes of human stem cells: pluripotent stem cells, cancer stem cells, and stem cells involved in neural repair, and thereby accelerate their human health applications. The specific objectives that underpin the Centre?s approach are to complete its first wave of PI recruitment into laboratory space that has been acquired for the Centre during its development phase (2006-2008); to strengthen the Centre?s core research resources and to ensure access to them by stem cell researchers across the University; and to develop a 4-year PhD training programme to develop further critical mass for the UK in stem cell research. Support is requested for the staff and students who will undertake the Centre?s research programmes and provide its research resources. Funding is also requested for acquiring and maintaining the key specialised instrumentation that will enable the Centre?s researchers to accomplish their objectives. In embracing its partnership with the Medical Research Council to establish this Centre, the University of Cambridge has made investments in stem cell research infrastructure that are so far unparalleled in the UK. It is now poised to establish the leading stem cell research centre in Europe and thereby to provide a UK model of successful translation of stem cell and regenerative medicine research to human health.
