University of Edinburgh/MRC Centre for Inflammation Research

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Scienc

Abstract

Inflammation, recognisable in the skin by soreness, redness and swelling following trauma, is a highly evolved defence system that helps our bodies fight invading micro-organisms and repair damage. However if inflammation is not controlled properly it may cause significant illness as is the case in diseases such as asthma and arthritis. Long term (or chronic) inflammatory diseases are amongst the major killers in the UK, for example: Heart and vascular disease, lung and airway disease (for example associated with smoking), chronic liver disease (for example associated with viral infection, alcohol abuse etc) and chronic kidney disease. Unchecked, inflammation also leads to tissue scarring (termed fibrosis) which can critically disrupt the function of organs such as the lung, kidney and liver. Inflammation is also becoming increasingly recognised as an important factor in the development of cancer. Whilst these diseases appear unrelated, there are events common to their development and progression which means that by understanding the biology of inflammation we will be able to develop new approaches to treatment of conditions affecting the lung, heart, liver or kidney. Additionally, we are developing methods of imaging inflammation and scarring to enable us to see how disease develops and test the effectiveness of treatments, without recourse to taking biopsies (a tissue sample).
The MRC-UoE Centre for Inflammation Research has a multi-disciplinary approach to the research of mechanisms underlying inflammatory disorders; with the aim of designing new treatments, and new methods to monitor and image these important conditions.

Technical Summary

Inflammatory disorders are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Moreover, chronic inflammation invariably leads to tissue and organ fibrosis with adverse functional consequences. There is a critical imperative to identify novel therapeutic targets in inflammation, new approaches to imaging inflammation and fibrosis and to move to translate these developments to clinical applications. The MRC UoE CIR is a multidisciplinary centre in which clinical and non clinical scientists prosecute internationally competitive research to identify targets and deliver translational benefits. Additionally, the Centre is a highly fertile environment for the training of science and medical graduates in inflammation biology. We are requesting renewal of Centre status and funding to continue our highly successful multidisciplinary approach to inflammation research, focussing on three key thematic areas: Immune modulation and regulation of inflammation, Tissue remodelling and regeneration and Imaging inflammation. We request the specific funding of a cohort of 4 year PhD students and two post doctoral fellowships to capacity build in this critical area of medical research.

Results and Impact Siobhan Crittenden and Lara Campana represented the University of Edinburgh/ MRC Centre for Inflammation Research at Boroughmuir High School's 'Speed Date a Scientist' science career's event on the evening of 15th June 2016. This event gave students in their final year of school a chance to have short informal discussions with a range of visitors at different stages in STEM field careers. The pupils all seemed to enjoy the evening. They came to realise that not everyone has a direct career path and that there is great variety in science related careers.
Pupil comments:
"The event opened my eyes to the vast number of job opportunities there are from studying a science at university. Talking to them about how they go to where they are was really useful"
"I now have a better idea of jobs I would like to do"
"Puts a lot of what you are learning in to the context of the real world. And helps A LOT with future plans"
"Builds confidence in your ability to talk to others, that you have never met before"

Results and Impact Professors Sarah Howie and Heather Cubie took to the stage again during the Festival fringe with their show "Cervical Cancer - You're History". Understanding how a small virus with only 8 genes can cause such devastating disease as cervical cancer is a big challenge and helping to improve public awareness as well as options for prevention and better treatment of infections is a big motivator, especially in low income countries such as Malawi, which has the highest incidence of cervical cancer in the world.

Results and Impact Researchers from MRC CIR took activities based on allergy; the effect of the gut microbiome on obesity and targeted cancer therapies to Dunbar Science Festival. Adults and children took on the "rash decision" allergy ball pit game; to see if you could help destroy the cancer cells and work out whether the "bad" bugs in your gut make you fat and "good" bugs keep you thin? Your immune system is AMAZING and can protect you from infection and keep you healthy but what happens to cause allergies? How can Scientists use the immune system to fight Cancer? Does what you eat alter whether you have "good" bugs or "bad" bugs in your body? Scientists from the University of Edinburgh need your help to tackle all these questions during this fun, immersive and interactive workshop!

Results and Impact Researchers from the CIR have been involved in the inaugural MRC Festival of Medical Research (18th - 26th June 2016), visiting four local schools to trial "Supercytes" a new inflammation / immunology schools resource, in advance of the future launch. This incorporates a presentation, short video about the CIR, a series of short, fun immune cell animations, a card game, a quiz and a competition, complete with teacher's lesson plan integrated into the Curriculum for Excellence.

Results and Impact The workshop 'Amazing Immunology' organised by representatives of the MRC Centre for Inflammation Research has been a massive success at the Edinburgh International Science Festival 2016. The tickets for the workshop were sold out, with an overall attendance of around 100 people, mostly children aged 6 to 11, who have learnt basic concepts on immunology and allergy in fun activities like the "Denny and the T-team", the "Rash Decisions" ball pool challenge and the "Immunological Stickers". The excellent feedback collected at the end of the workshop:
"Definitely the best. I think everyone should go. Rating - *****/*****"
"Very good fun. I learnt loads!"
"Fun ways to teach us!"
The event was a fantastic reward for the 16 volunteers who ran the activities in these 4 days of fun and science.

Results and Impact For the first time this year the CIR participated in a program called "Science Insights". This program, supported by the MRC, is designed for 5th Year High School students to spend a week during their summer holidays in labs to see what research is all about. It initially started in 2014 across IGMM and Roslin and it has been expanded this year to Central and Little France. The students spent a week across two campuses, attending a series of talks on various aspects of research (ie ethics, animal research, careers in science), touring facilities, meeting students and there were several 2 hour slots in labs to get hands-on experience. In the CIR, students went to the labs of Marc Vendrell, Sarah Walmsley and Proteus.

Results and Impact MRC CIR researchers Donald J Davidson, Cathy Hawley and Elena Dora presented our new inflammation and immunology educational resource Supercytes to 22 High School biology teachers from all over Scotland at a Scottish Schools Education Research Centre CPD Training event at the Roslin Institute on 7 March 2017.

The free Supercytes game and resource pack, which will be launched soon for use in academic year 2017-2018, was very enthusiastically received, with all 22 teachers feeding back that they would definitely use it, requesting to be early adopters, and providing some really helpful thoughts.
