Renewal of the MRC Cognitive Function and Ageing Co-operative

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Institute of Public Health

Abstract

Over the last decade CFAS has collected data from the older population in six sites including biological tissue. A unique group of scientists and social scientists from across the UK are actively working together to learn as much as possible from this study to inform current and future research and policy. Examples of the output so far are the exact number of people we would expect to develop dementia in England and Wales each year and population levels of disability free life expectancy for those aged 65 years and above. New data will tell us whether people coming into the older age groups now have the same patterns of mental function and disability as those who went before. The study will continue to provide many types of output including use of the Internet, giving presentations, producing public reports (including local PCT reports) and producing newsletters. We aim to increase accessibility to the results through further development of Internet technology including health observatories. We have sought to create a website which can provide the appropriate level of detail about the study. The Eastern Regional Observatory provides a link to our site, and hence to all other observatories. Further long-term development of our website will facilitate more detailed access to the information about the study.

Technical Summary

The MRC Cognitive Function and Ageing study (CFAS) is a multicentre, multidisciplinary investigation of health and frailty in ageing populations. The overarching and enduring aim of CFAS is to provide sound evidence on health and health changes with age. The focus in CFAS is brain ageing and neurodegenerative disorders, life expectancy in differing health states and related areas. The CFAS Co-operative is flourishing and continues to maintain, support and broaden cross-centre collaboration between the scientists involved providing rich opportunities for training. The support for the core infrastructure of the Co-operative has been critical in its success. It has allowed effective integration and support for a range of disciplines investigating molecular biology to policy within the context of a population based study over a sustained period.
The specific aims of this renewal are to promote new and sustain ongoing work in the themes developed in the first phase of the Co-operative in a planned, integrated manner. These themes are: dementia and associated conditions; depression; health active life expectancy, disability and survival; health and health policy; ethics and research governance; and data and analysis methods. In this phase we seek to exploit and extend the scientific strengths of the Co-operative, capitalising on its collaborative structure, the established core skills and the unique biological resource in order to answer new questions of key importance in the area of ageing.

Impact The agreement, known as the Blackfriars Consensus Statement, highlights the need for a new national focus on dementia risk reduction. It was drawn up following a meeting held earlier in 2014r by the UK Health Forum and Public Health England (PHE) in Blackfriars, London. The Blackfriars Consensus Statement says that the scientific evidence on dementia risk reduction is evolving rapidly and is now sufficient to justify action to incorporate dementia risk reduction into health policies and to raise wider awareness about which factors can reduce the risk of developing dementia. The Statement is launched during Dementia Awareness Week (19 to 24 May 2014) and is intended to help raise awareness among policy makers and the wider health and care workforce as well as the public that dementia is amenable to risk reduction in similar ways to other non-communicable diseases.

So the collaboration started with him as he did his MD in levels of B12 and Alzheimer's. He made some money from the launch of a B12 combined drug and he puts the ptofits into this to use for research. Cardiff -Blood analysis (paid for by cfas), SUNY -genetic analysis (not paid for - quid pro quo for access to material and to write a paper, COBALZ - leading on generating novel ideas or testing out current ideas in the field of B12 metabolism and cognition

Vitamin B12 and folate status as independent determinants of cognitive function in the MRC Cognitive Function and Ageing Study.
