Title HCV Research UK Clinical Database and Biobank
Description Information from consenting patients have been entered into a clinical database. These patients also provide clinical samples for the biobank. The clinical database and management system for the biobank are bespoke systems built specifically for HCV Research UK. They have been developed such that interaction between the two database systems can be achieved. The data and samples are made available to researchers (either in academia or the pharmaceutical industry; both UK- and non-UK-based)
Type Of Material Biological samples
Year Produced 2013
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact The establishment of HCV Research UK has underpinned and directly enabled the following: 1. Award of £4M grant on MRC call for Stratified Medicine to the STOP-HCV consortium, a group of academic institutions, national health agencies and pharmaceutical companies. 2. Requests from several pharmaceutical companies for access to data for submissions to NICE for new anti-viral compounds. 3. Requests from pharmaceutical companies for access to samples for new diagnostic tests. 4. Access to data and samples from HCV-infected patients from across the UK for phyloepidemiological studies. 5. Provided a large number of samples for development of high throughput sequencing methodologies. 6. Provided the samples for a Health Innovation Challenge Fund award by Wellcome Trust for enabling roll-out of high throughput sequencing across NHS sites. 7. Enabled collection of data and samples on Early Access Programme, an initiative funded by NHS England to allow patients access to interferon-free therapies for HCV infection ahead of NICE approval.

Title NGS Target Enrichment
Description The technology enabled the enrichment of HCV-specific sequences in Next Generation Sequencing. It also increased the numbers of samples that could be included in a single sequencing run from about 10-12 to 90, which is much more cost effective.
Type Of Material Technology assay or reagent
Provided To Others? No
Impact The methodology is now being developed for diagnostic services and to establish an enrichment platform for flaviviruses circulating in the Philippines.

Title HCV Research UK
Description HCV Research UK holds the clinical data for approximately 11,000 patients infected with hepatitis C virus in the UK. We also have a linked biobank database for holding the information on all samples processed and stored in the HCV Research UK biorepository.
Type Of Material Database/Collection of data
Year Produced 2013
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact The data and samples have been used for a number of purposes including: 1. Submissions to NICE by pharma companies 2. Submission to the European Medicines Agency on drug utilisation 3. Data provided, in combination with samples, for extensive viral sequencing and host genetic studies. 4. Acting as the data and sample repository for a Gilead-funded phase III clinical trial in the UK, USA and Australia (BOSON) 5 Acting as the data and sample repository for the NHS England Early Access Programme that provides IFN-free, all oral therapy to HCV-infected patients with serious liver disease. 6. Underpins the data and samples provided to the STOP-HCV MRC-funded consortium. 7. Provides infrastructure support for the STOP-HCV Cirrhosis study and the STOP-HCV1 EME study.

Results and Impact Carol Leitch, at the request of Health Protection Scotland carried out the phylogenetic analysis of the 2 patient samples suspected of being infected by a healthcare worker in Lanarkshire. She was able to show that the HCV infecting these individuals was closely related and this was backed up by individuals from PHE who performed another analysis. This led to the realisation that these patients had likely been infected during a procedure carried out by the healthcare worker. This information formed the basis of a report submitted by NHS Lanarkshire to the UK Advisory Panel for Healthcare Workers Infected with Blood Borne Viruses and the national body endorsed the health board's proposal to carry out a patient notification exercise. 8383 patients treated by this healthcare worked will now be contacted and offered screening for HCV. As a result, the BBC featured a news story about the security alert- http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-35639826. This is an example how the work of the CVR has a direct influence on Policy, Practice, along with patients and public interests.

Carol was able to meet with several of our researchers who provided short presentations about their research. Carol was very enthusiastic to learn about our research, links with industry and also about importance of funding. She then went on to mention the CVR and what she had learned during the visit at a parliamentary meeting in Westminster later that week. Furthermore, she then went on to visit one of the other Biomedical research centres that forms part of the University of Glasgow to gain a further insight into some of the important work and research being carried out across the University.

Results and Impact HCV Research UK is a multi-disciplinary collaborative enterprise funded by a £1.92m grant from the Medical Research Foundation and based at the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research.

This ground breaking initiative has involved the development of a Bio-repository of clinical samples and cohort study of greater than 10,000 patients infected by Hepatitis C Virus (HCV).

The database of information gathered about this cohort group is supporting the work of STOP-HCV and is also influencing prescribing decisions taken by the NHS. The information is also being made available for future research into HCV infection, thereby influencing and creating greater funding opportunities for research in this disease area.

Results and Impact Over the course of two events in June 2013, we interacted with approximately 350 children and their families. We used these interactions to communicate some basic facts about viruses - focussing on their size, structure, routes of transmission and how to limit spread. As part of the activity, we asked participants to consider the question 'If you were a virology researcher what would you study?' and collected responses using post-it note feedback. This provided a good opportunity to discuss the impact of medical research (we often used vaccines as an example), and the importance of the support of the Medical Research Council to help scientists tackle some of the greatest health problems facing humanity.

We have been invited to display the timeline at local schools and science centres across Scotland.
