Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
Technical Summary
1 To build on the work already done to link birth registration data to the NHS numbers for babies dataset by further linking these data to the maternity hospital episode statistics for England and the patient episode database Wales (PEDW) linked to the national community child health database for Wales. 2 To compare and validate key common data items across datasets, notably the items in the core HES and PEDW records and, where available, items from the maternity tail including gestational age, birthweight, ethnicity and multiplicity. 3 To compare routine data submitted to national systems with those recorded in and available from local systems in east London and north-east England. 4 To assess whether the introduction of payment by results has led to an improvement in the quality and completeness of data in maternity HES, notably in the maternity tail. 5 To explore the scope for using the dataset to analyse data about care given at delivery and parity record

| Impact | It enabled us to analyse births by time of day and day of the week in relation to data collected about care at birth. Data are held in secure facilities in the Office for National Statistics Secure Research Service and can be used by other researchers on application to relevant organisations responsible for the data. The TIGAR project has used the data we have linked and the PICNIC project is using the database now by linking it to census data. |
