King’s College London Confidence in Concept

Lead Research Organisation: King's College London
Department Name: UNLISTED

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

The Confidence in Concept scheme is a key part of MRC’s translational research strategy and provides annual awards to institutions, to be used flexibly to support the earliest stages of multiple translational research projects. The award can be used by the institution to support a number of preliminary-stage translational projects. The projects supported should aim to provide sufficient preliminary data to establish the viability of an approach –– before seeking more substantive funding.  It is intended to accelerate the transition from discovery research to translational development projects by supporting preliminary work or feasibility studies to establish the viability of an approach.

Title Accelerated 3D 1 mm isotropic T2w-Imaging of the Prostate in less than 3 min
Description T2-weighted imaging is a key contrast in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for prostate cancer diagnostics and stratification. Three dimensional (3D), isotropic T2-weighted imaging of the prostate requires a long acquisition time. We have developed a 3D T2-prepared multi- shot bSSFP acquisition with a variable density undersampled trajectory and TV-SENSE reconstruction. We have published results from a healthy volunteer study and demonstrated that 3D 1 mm isotropic resolution T2-weighted images of the prostate can be acquired in 2 min 45 s, with image quality that is comparable to the clinical standard turbo spin echo sequences but only takes 1/3 of the acquisition time.
Type Diagnostic Tool - Imaging
Current Stage Of Development Initial development
Year Development Stage Completed 2018
Development Status Under active development/distribution
Impact This sequence is currently implemented at the hospital and tested in a pilot patient study.

Title Accelerated 3D and quantitative T2-mapping with dictionary-based matching for prostate cancer imaging
Description Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most frequent types of cancer in men. Multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) of the prostate, which consists of the acquisition of 2D T2-weighted (T2w), dif- fusion-weighted and gadolinium-based dynamic contrast- enhanced images, has shown great potential for diagnosis of PCa and has been shown to correlate with pathological Gleason score. Whereas 2D T2w images are evaluated in a qualitative manner, quantitative MRI directly relates the MR signals to quantitative tissue features enabling consistent and reproducible assessment and thus more reliable treatment decisions. However, the scan time is too long. We have developed an imaging approach for 3D quantitative T2 mapping using undersampled acquisition and dictionary-based fitting. We have shown in an initial healthy volunteer pilot study that accurate and rapid 3D T2-mapping of the prostate is feasible in under 3 minutes and can be used in an mpMRI protocol for PCa detection and characterization.

Impact We have published results from an initial healthy volunteer pilot study that accurate and rapid 3D T2-mapping of the prostate is feasible in under 3 minutes and can be used in an mpMRI protocol for PCa detection and characterization. We have implemented the sequence on clinical scanners throughout the hospital to acquire pilot patient data towards clinical translation.
