Nutrition and Health Communications: translating nutrition research into policy and practice

Abstract

HNR Nutrition and Health Communications acts as an independent source of information on nutrition science to help policymakers, industry and others to make best use of the evidence in their own work, especially in the areas of obesity, bone health and micronutrients. We work with government departments, especially the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency. We have an active dialogue with industry to encourage steps that will improve consumer health by reformulating existing products or developing new ones. These relationships are conducted openly and in accordance with rigorous Heads of Terms, designed to safeguard our reputation for independence and integrity. |We provide an important source of scientific information for the media on topical nutrition matters and contribute to many TV documentaries and radio programmes with an informed perspective, built upon scientific evidence. We meet directly with the public at Science Festivals and other events, including public lectures, open days, and talks for interested groups, including schools. We have specifically developed a Sizzling Science cookery demonstration and the HNR Food Factory, where the public are able to make their own cornflakes. Together these activities bring the work of the MRC to a wider public and informs everyone about how to improve their diet and lead healthier lives.

Technical Summary

Poor diet is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality. The aim of HNR Nutrition and Health Communications is to accelerate improvements in the health of the nation through reductions in diet-related disease by integrating and then communicating the emerging evidence, especially in areas where HNR has specific expertise, notably obesity, bone health and micronutrients. We actively engage with external stakeholders to inform their work, including policymakers, industry, media, NGOs, charities, health professionals, lay audiences and those working in other academic disciplines. Our focus is on three groups; policymakers to develop the framework for action on nutrition and health, the food industry to shape the food environment and the public, who we will reach primarily through the media, in order to drive improved consumer food and lifestyle choices. We seek to embed public health nutrition goals for lifelong health and wellbeing within the wider food issues of the 21st century, notably food security and sustainability, operating at all levels of the food supply system from food production to consumer advice, recognising the importance of developing clear, consistent messages, within an overarching strategy, to stimulate change at both an individual and population level. We work alongside other government departments, especially the Department of Health (DH) and the Food Standards Agency (FSA). HNR scientists sit on a number of Expert Advisory Committees and ad hoc Working Groups on matters relating to nutrition and also obesity. We have an active dialogue with industry to encourage steps that will improve consumer health or benefit public understanding of nutrition science. These relationships are conducted according to Nolan principles of openness and in accordance with rigorous Heads of Terms, designed to safeguard our reputation for independence and integrity. Health professionals regard HNR as a source of credible information on the links between nutrition and health and we provide resources to support good practice through our website and articles in selected publications. We have a substantial media presence and provide an informed perspective on topical nutrition issues. We engage directly with the public through a series of public engagements activities, including Science Festivals, public lectures, open days and talks for interested groups, including schools. We have specifically developed a Sizzling Science cookery demonstration which is adaptable for a variety of public audiences as well as schools, healthcare professionals and caterers. We also developed the HNR Food Factory, where the public are able to make their own cornflakes. Both initiatives act to bring the work of the MRC to a wider public and inform everyone about how to improve their diet and lead healthier lives. Nutrition and Health Communications plays a key role in the dissemination of research in HNR and across the wider MRC nutrition portfolio. This includes the continual enhancement of the website, scientific reports and seminars, notably the annual Elsie Widdowson Lecture. This work promotes and enhances the new MRC corporate identity and adds value to broader MRC communications activities. The programme is vital to ensure that new research findings are translated into applications which directly benefit public health.
