Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Technical Summary

This programme on infectious diseases currently includes studies on infectious intestinal disease (IID2), flu (FluWatch & FluUK) & sexually transmitted infections (Balls Eye & Partner Notification STI).|The second study of infectious intestinal disease (IID2) is examining changes in the prevalence of the problem in the last decade and the relationship between disease burden in the community and laboratory surveillance of five key pathogens, in keeping with the Governments initiatives to reduce food borne disease. |The flu studies, are in place to: inform our understanding of the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of seasonal influenza as well as the role of prior T cells immunity in development of the infection; inform the national and international response to the emergence of the new A/H1N1 virus and will provide valuable information for future pandemics; estimate the incidence of any medically-attended adverse events in vaccinated subjects.|Lastly, the sexually transmitted infection studies cover a few areas. The partner notification for sexually transmitted infections trial will examine the relative clinical and cost-effectiveness of three contrasting approaches to partner notification for curable STIs in primary care. Whereas, Balls Eye aims to improve the sexual health of young men in the UK by resolving an evidence gap in strategies for STI diagnosis.

Title Data capture
Description We developed a secure, web-based database that captured information in Primary Care, a hospital laboratory and the Reference Laboratories at the Health Protection Agency.
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Software Developed? Yes
Provided To Others? No
Impact The GP owned the patient record but the record could be viewed by staff in the diagnostic microbiology laboratory and the reference laboratory. Data capture was easy and data entry was easy for all concerned. The system meant that data cleaning was also easy prior to analysis.
