Results and Impact	The Syncrasy Exhibition, Sat 26 June - Sun 12 Sept 2021: 650 unique visitors across the 11 weeks Syncrasy was a contemporary art exhibition co-curated by Summerhall and ASCUS Art & Science. "We began as part of the body" by Beverley Hood, was a series of works that played with scale to capture the fleeting lifespan of living cells. This was one of three exhibitions by artists working across the fields of art, science and technology that reflected on complex human and ethical questions about our relationship between the body, science and technology. Inspired by the eczema genetic research laboratory of Prof Sara Brown, artist Beverley Hood's experimental exhibition told a story from the perspective of artificial skin cells, following the cells' three week long 'in-vitro' life, from operating theatre to lab and finally to disposal. These works were presented as a video projection, 3D prints and Augmented Reality App, alongside science engagement and historical materials. It attracted 650 visitors.

Results and Impact	3 x S5-S6 pupils to learn about and help with our DecodeME project The DecodeME project is a true co-production research study that aims to find genetic causes of why people become ill with Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), through the world's largest genetic ME/CFS study, in partnership with the UK CFS/ME Research Collaborative (CMRC) and Action for M.E.  https://www.decodeme.org.uk/. The DecodeME project is currently in the recruitment phase and we are busy sending out hundreds of questionnaires to participants The IGC invited 5 x S5 - S6 pupils into our Institute after school to help stuff envelopes with 400+ DecodeME questionnaires and learned more about this innovative research that is setting a new standard for Patient Public Involvement (PPI) in biomedical research Chris Ponting showed a video and gave a talk and team chatted to them about their own interests/ uni plans etc. Helen gave them a micro-IGC tour. They asked  lots of questions about the study and science generally. One plans to study medicine, one forensic science or pharmacology and one animal science.

Heather Love, PhD student, Cathy Abbott  Lab, ran a leaf pigment chromatography workshop. She explained how she uses other techniques like electrophoresis to separate proteins or DNA in the lab at the IGC and what these are used for.

Results and Impact	Thurs 2 July 2020: MRC HGU sponsored an episode of Genetics Unzipped - the Genetics Society's podcast series: The eyes have it: From genetics to gene therapy In surveys people consistently rank vision as their most valued sense, but the reality is that many of us will have to face deteriorating eyesight thanks to genetic eye diseases. Around two million people are affected by visual loss as a result of genetic disorders. The idea of losing your sight is frightening so research into understanding the causes of genetic eye conditions and seeking treatments or cures is really important. There are more than 350 inherited eye diseases and more than 500 genes that causing these conditions. MRC Human Genetics Unit (HGU) research into eye disease spans inherited conditions affecting the retina, the cornea and the whole eye. MRC HGU with support from the MRC has sponsored a Genetics Unzipped Podcast "The eyes have it: From genetics to gene therapy" out on Thursday, 2 July 2020. This podcast episode reveals some of the innovative research currently taking place on genetic eye conditions. How are researchers, doctors and people living with genetic eye diseases working together? Find out about research into the genetic causes of some eye diseases through to urgently-needed treatments that could save or restore sight. Chloe Stanton A Research Fellow describes her research on the genetic causes of eye diseases that affect the eye's cornea or the retina. Ken Reid Now in his early 60's, describes gradually losing his sight as a teenager and being diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition Retinitis Pigmentosa at 26. Ken reveals how he has learned to cope with a series of 'new normals' and why he decided to support MRC HGU research by generously providing a skin biopsy. Roly Megaw Consultant Ophthalmologist and Clinical Researcher has both a clinical and research interest in genetic eye disease. Roly talks about his research that focuses on the inherited retinal dystrophy called Retinitis Pigmentosa. Professor Robin Ali Director of the Centre for Cell and Gene Therapy, King's College London outlines his research on developing gene and cell therapy for the treatment of retinal disorders and the gene therapy trial on Retinitis Pigmentosa and looks into the future. Mary Derrick Partnership Communications Manager, Medical Research Council said "Engaging meaningfully with people living with genetic eye conditions ensures that MRC-funded research better reflects their needs and aspirations, with the goal of increasing the beneficial impacts on their lives".

The Scholars Program at the University of Edinburgh provides postgraduate scholarships to students from Africa with great academic and leadership potential but few educational opportunities. Students joined Dr Olga Oikonomidou, CRUK Edinburgh Centre, in her WGH clinic on 2 occasions to get some experience on dealing with breast cancer patients, listening to their concerns etc. and engaging with Cancer Nurse Specialists (CNSs).

Results and Impact	Sat 26 June - Sun 11 July 2021: Edinburgh Science Festival (Moved from normal dates of Easter school holidays due to the Pademic) When visiting the Western General Hospital, the group of 3 building opposite Fettes College are part of the University of Edinburgh. The central glass-fronted building is the MRC Institute of Genetics and Cancer (previously known as the IGMM). This striking building was completed in 2016 and this research institute is a partnership between 3 centres - the MRC Human Genetics Unit (HGU), The CRUK Edinburgh Centre (CRUK EC) and the Centre for Genomic & Molecular Medicine (CGEM). Each research centre has its own unique history, but the powerful synergy emerging from their common research strengths led to the formation of the IGMM in 2009. The story of biomedical research stretches back to the post-war period and works towards delivering better understanding of genetic diseases, including cancers, with quicker diagnosis, improved and tailored treatments - ensuring better health outcomes. We will take you behind the scenes and show off some of our cool tools. We'll reveal some of our research in action - how we're helping to tackle COVID-19, cancer and rare diseases and how we're addressing ethical challenges, such as the use of animals in research. We'll show that science is for everyone as our researchers describe their work and what motivated them to become researchers.

Applicants from our Institute also have the opportunity to take part in the Academy Zone, where they can learn more about good public engagement practice while taking part. The Genetics Zone is funded by the MRC Human Genetics Unit, Institute of Genetics and Cancer; Wellcome Connecting Science, and Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics. 10 IGC staff and students participated - 4 PhD students, 4 Technicians, 1 Bioinformatician and 1 Research Fellow. Five were from the MRC HGU This Zone featured 30 scientists who engaged with 684 students from 32 schools across the UK 69% of active students were from priority schools: 38% from underserved schools and 41% from widening participation schools There were 41 Live Chats and on average, 4 scientists took part in each Live Chat The 3 of the 5 most active scientists on the Live Chats were from the IGC: Charli Corcoran, Charlene Kay and Katie Pickup One the Weekly Winners was from the IGC - Charli Corcoran, from the Zebrafish Facility who also was voted the genetics Zone Winner

But how reliable are the results? "More than 10 million people have taken the 23andMe test alone. So should we all be taking a DNA test? And if the results are so profound, why doesn't the NHS offer such services?"The bottom line is I haven't done it myself," says Sara Brown, a professor at the University of Edinburgh specialising in the genetic causes of disease. "That should tell you something about how highly I value it. We're all keen to have the equivalent of a crystal ball. So I can totally understand why people want to do it. But would I ever recommend it to a patient? I wouldn't." Brown explains that genetics is almost always too complex to be reduced to a set of results delivered via an app. "The uncertainties make it really difficult to recommend for a specific question." For example, look at the likelihood of contracting a disease: "If you have an 80% risk, you've got a 20% likelihood you won't get it. How then do you use that information in your everyday life?" Factor in lifestyle, environment, and umpteen other genetic variables, and the gap between genes and real-world outcomes become perilously uncertain. "Very, very few diseases are a single gene," she warns. "The vast, vast majority of human diseases are related to multiple genetic effects interacting with each other and also interacting with multiple environmental factors." "I have used research data from 23andMe," says Brown. "They share collected genetic testing with researchers and I've benefited from this." Brown says the company's numbers "blew out of the water the numbers from other sources. Genetics is about numbers, it's about probabilities. We need bigger and bigger numbers. And that's what we get through resources such as 23andMe."

Coats disease affects the retina at the back of the eye that detects light and colour. Coats plus syndrome is caused by mutations in the CTC1 gene, the STN1 gene or the POT1 gene. It secured funding from Creative Scotland - The National Lottery Open Fund: Sustaining Creative Development 2020-21 £49,950. The project aims to foster an open dialogue between artists, researchers and patient voices that seeks to navigate the ethical, empirical and creative challenges around gene editing. The project looks at bringing together research, data science, visual arts, sound and language into an experimental toolkit and set of frameworks that presents the project findings via an online digital platform using machine learning and a variety of cutting edge digital arts tools to enable the public to engage with playful online interactive interventions. The event was presented by Dr Linda O'Keeffe  - Head of the School of Fine Art, Edinburgh College of Art Edinburgh University and Malcom White,  Professor at School of Biology at St Andrews. The researchers will talk about their work and facilitate a discussion which will contribute to the overall findings of the project. Attendees will be invited to contribute their views and observe and participate in - "SurveyWorld" - the project's online research environment. The purpose of this Sci-Art R&D project is to make tangible with visible/audible outputs, the ethical implications of emerging technologies in the biological sciences, in particular the field of CRISPR gene editing technology. We will explore and present some of the ethics and future implications of gene editing through a digital multi-arts approach. Results and Impact	Mon 26 - Fri 30 July 2021 Science Insights is a week-long summer work experience programme, initiated by IGMM in 2014 that has expanded across the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. It was created in response to demand from teachers and pupils for S5 work experience opportunities within our labs and we have proactively forged and valued partnerships with Widening Participation; the Inclusion Matters Project and Moray House, (all at the University of Edinburgh); Scottish Secondary Biology Teacher Networks & Education Scotland, and with the Concordat on Openness in Animal Research and Technician Commitment team, all in order to make our programme as inclusive and equitable as possible and to be open and transparent in showcasing our research. Science Insights is designed to give 16 year old school pupils a real insight into the work and life of research scientists across different areas of biological, biomedical and animal sciences. Science Insights is for S5 pupils who attend school in Scotland and are interested in studying biological, biomedical or animal sciences at university. The non-residential, week-long programme takes place in late July. It includes presentations and discussions on a range of topics, such as: Ethics in research; The use of animals in research; Science is for everyone - Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity in research and Careers path options Skills session on applying to university. The core of the on campus version of the programme is laboratory research taster sessions and tours of specialist research facilities. In the online version of the programmer, pupils meet researchers at numerous "Meet the Scientist" sessions. Science Insights engages S5 pupils from all over Scotland and is supported by Scottish Science teachers and CMVM Researchers and Technicians, who recognise it to be a high quality work experience programme. Large numbers of researchers, technicians and students volunteer to help deliver this programme, with over 150 involved in the on-campus programme. The number of pupils participating increased from 16 to 40 per year and the catchment area expanded. In response to the Pandemic, a new online programme was developed and was delivered successfully in 2020 and 2021, increasing the capacity to 60 pupils and attracting pupils from across Scotland, generating positive feedback. Science Insights also provides our research scientists and technicians with a well-supported opportunity to engage with school pupils and develop their own engagement - science communication skills while they provide insights into studying science; working in research within wider societal context and career path options. The university's Widening Participation team works closely with the Science Insights team to ensure that pupils from a range of different backgrounds take part. We know that Science Insights is impactful and inspires many S5 pupils to go onto university, with a proportion being first generation undergraduate students. Given that this programme has diverse positive outcomes, we are keen to expand the capacity AND to deliver both programme options in the future, with an on-campus programme for pupils within the local catchment area and an online programme for pupils from across Scotland, in order to ensure equity of access to work experience and enable more young people to experience Science Insights.

This online event was compered by Glaswegian comedian Jamie MacDonald, whose routine involves his experience living with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) - a degenerative eye condition caused by a mutation in over 100 potential genes. Staff from Retina UK presented their report "Unlock Genetics from Retina UK: a new resource for families affected by inherited sight loss". A person l;iving with RP shared his insights on this genetic eye condition. Researchers from the MRC HGU presented on RP, Aniridia, keratoconus, brittle cornea syndrome and retinal degeneration, as well as the use of computational modelling of protein structures to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying mutations that cause eye disease. Results and Impact	8 June 2021, 5-6pm: Shining a Light on Osteogenesis imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease) Online Audience: 40 People living with genetic disorders and their families are at the heart of our Institute's research and we created our programme of Shining a Light events to celebrate the power of partnerships. When we collaborate with people living with genetic conditions and our NHS colleagues, our research has the greatest impact. At our Shining a Light events, researchers and people living with genetic conditions co-present, providing illuminating insights. This event showcased the clinical trial work undertaken within CGEM by Professor Stuart Ralston and the TOPaZ Clinical Trial which is investigating whether a two-year spell of treatment with two drugs, teriparatide (TPTD) & zoledronic acid (ZA),reduces the risk of broken bones in people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta OIU - also known as brittle bone disease. Mandy Grant shared her own experience of living with OI and how OI has affected her wider family, in the hope of helping others, with Dee Davison, IGC Public Engagement Manager. Representatives of 2 charities that provide vital assistance to people living with OI also presented. Patricia Osborne, CEO described how Brittle Bone UK provides invaluable support to those affected and their families, while Ingunn Westerheim, the President of OIFE outlined the mission of Osteogenesis Imperfecta Federation Europe - to connect and empower organisations, professionals and individuals to improve the lives of people living with this rare condition.

Results and Impact	IGC Kiltwalk Team raised awareness and money for the Edinburgh Research into Cancer (ERIC) charitable fund, set up to support pioneering research into cancer in Edinburgh. The ERIC fund was both conceived and inspired by our colleague, Andy Sims, a talented cancer researcher who sadly passed away in May 2021. The team walked in Andy's memory and in hope of better treatments for those diagnosed with cancer now and in the future   IGC Kilt Walkers who walked 121 miles, joining the 5,000 walkers who donned kilts and tartan to take on various walking routes across Scotland's Capital. Staff at Robertson Construction Central East, contractors to the Institute's 4D Cellular Medicine building project, also walked for the ERIC Fund & NHS Lothian Charity. More than £5,000 was raised, including matched donations by The Hunter Foundation. Since 2016, Kiltwalk heroes have raised £22.5M & The Hunter Foundation have added £11.4M = £33.9M for over 3,000 charities

Results and Impact	Weds 9 Feb, 2.30-3.30pm 2022: #WhyLabResearchMatters Virtual Lab Tour event with CRM & AMMF - the Cholangiocarcinoma charity An innovative PPI event, prior to World Cholangiocarcinoma Day on Saturday, 12 Feb, part of Cholangiocarcinoma Awareness Month. The MRC HGU collaborated with the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) to provide a Virtual Lab Tour for AMMF - the Cholangiocarcinoma charity, who fund some of Luke Boulter's group's research. Using the CRM Virtual Tour, we were able to show what a research centre is like, including the specialist research facilities, and shared videos of Luke, Rachel, Anabel and Mollie describing their research on bile duct cancer. For people living with Cholangiocarcinoma, this provided real insights into how the fundraising undertaken by AMMF supports vital research in Luke's group. It was an inspiring event that triggered lots of excellent and challenging questions from the audience.

Results and Impact	Dee Davison, IGC PE Manager, partnered with the Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) in the University of Edinburgh on their social media campaign #WhyLabResearchMatters This showcased the role of laboratory based medical research, sharing stories / quotes on social media, as well as delivering virtual tours (using their 360 tour) in partnership with charities As the CRM virtual tour effectively showcases a typical research Institute and its facilities, including Tissue Culture labs etc., a bespoke video could be created using relevant sections of footage from this tour and adding in video clips of MRC HGU researchers. Luke Boulter and his research group talked about their Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) research, in their lab and from some of our research facilities.

Results and Impact	Thursday 2 December 2021: Westminster Parliament POST POST (Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology) iwrote a POSTnote (research briefing) on age assessment of children in immigration policy. Draft legislation in the Nationality and Borders Bill sets out the possibility for the future use of molecular analytical tests that could be used to determine an individual's age. The Government has specified that such tests could include: "the analysis of saliva, cell or other samples taken from a person (including the analysis of DNA in the samples)." POST sought experts with a background in molecular and genetic research to help with: understanding the scientific credibility of the Government's proposals, and finding and interpreting the relevant scientific literature Nick Gilbert, TestEd & Riccardo Marioni: "We are probably quite well placed to comment on the science behind this in terms of DNA methylation." RIccardo Marioni commenting on the science behind this in terms of DNA methylation - still the most accurate way to predict chronological age from a blood or saliva sample.  RIccardo Marioni reviewed a 4 page summary document, with a specific focus on appraising the potential of DNA methylation for age prediction

Results and Impact	17 June 2021: IGC sponsored an episode of Genetics Unzipped - the Genetics Society's podcast series: Why Me? Searching for genetic susceptibility to chronic fatigue syndrome and pain This podcast episode, supported by the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh, reveals how researchers are using genetics to understand more about what's going on in long-term debilitating conditions including ME/CFS and chronic pain, working hand in hand with patients to help to figure out who might be at risk and pointing towards new ideas for treatment. The major new research study called DecodeME, will search for genetic variations that may explain why some people are more likely to develop ME/CFS than others. One of the most important parts of the DecodeME study is that people living with ME/CFS are involved in every aspect of it, and Andy Devereux-Cooke who has ME, is playing a leading role in the study management team. Another life-limiting health issue - chronic pain was discussed with Professor Blair Smith is a consultant in pain medicine at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, and is one of the clinical researchers working on Generation Scotland - a large research study looking at the health, wellbeing and genetics of more than 24,000 people living in Scotland, from around 7,000 families, hosted by the MRC HGU. Professor Caroline Hayward and her team at the MRC Human Genetics Unit, within the Institute of Genetics and Cancer, have been working together with clinical colleagues like Blair Smith, scanning through the DNA from thousands of people in the Generation Scotland study and other cohorts in search of genetic variations that might be contributing to chronic pain.
