ELIXIR-UK: FAIR Data Stewardship training
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Bradford
Abstract
Our aim is to establish a national Data Stewardship training programme, exploiting a wealth of resources and expertise within ELIXIR, an intergovernmental organisation that unites Europe's leading life science organisations in managing and safe-guarding the increasing volume of data being generated by publicly funded research. We will lift these resources and expertise in research data management into the UK, tailoring them to needs of the UK researchers with the help of a pool of experts and practitioners, and delivering them to UK universities and institutions through a Life Science Data Stewardship Fellowship programme.
The proposed Data Stewardship training programme will be developed and run ELIXIR-UK, the UK national node of 18 organisations. Its members actively lead much of the ELIXIR work in training and services for research data management that are essential to ensure that data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR).
Despite the promotion of data stewardship by stakeholders at a national level, only a fraction of data generated by UK life science researchers is openly shared and far less is FAIR. Although FAIR data management is endorsed by funding agencies and data infrastructure specialists worldwide, as well as global open scholarship advocates and organisations, it is less well known among researchers who generate and (re)use data. Undoubtedly there is a great deal of bioinformatics training but not much of this is on research data management. When such training exists generally it is either run by organisations and data providers, who offer good training but tailored to their own resources, or it is too generic to be usefully practical, because it does not address the realities and varieties of data.
The specific objectives of our Data Stewardship training programme are:
1. To develop and deliver modularised virtual training tailored for Life Science data stewardship grounded in real practice.
2. To establish a fellowship of Life Science Data Stewards that will seed a training network to migrate research data management best practice and training into UK universities and research institutions.
3. To adapt and contribute to openly available training materials, best practice and research data management methods in relevant ELIXIR resources.
4. To maintain training materials, know-how and a self-sustained fellowship network.
Our Data Stewardship training programme will be broadly applicable across communities and specialist topics by data type (e.g. sensitive human data, proteomics, image management), community (e.g. marine metagenomics, plant sciences, structural biology). We aim to target a diverse and inclusive audience, covering those looking to manage and share life science data: specifically (i) biomedical researchers and healthcare specialists at all career stages, and (ii) their research support staff, such as data stewards, technicians, facility operators, research software engineers. The latter will build continuity, establish a sustainable foothold in UK institutions and provides a route to professionalisation of data stewardship.

Technical Summary
The UK's Open Research Data Task Force urges that we grow our capability on research data management and form professional experts. The EC's High Level Expert Group of the European Open Science Cloud urges we educate and equip up to 500,000 data stewards in Europe. Best practices, services and training on research data management are core to the mission of the ELIXIR-UK national node of the European research Infrastructure for life science data. Its members lead on many relevant activities and resources within the ELIXIR initiative. Our national Data Stewardship training programme will exploit this wealth of existing resources and expertise.
We will reuse, adapt and recontribute to openly-available training materials, best practice and research data management methods in relevant ELIXIR resources, tackling all points of the research data life cycle, including: a Data Stewardship Wizard for Data Management Planning, a RDM Toolkit that follows the RDM lifecycle, FAIR Cookbook of "FAIRification" best practice, and a training portal (TeSS) for registering training material made FAIR.
We will deliver a modularised virtual training programme tailored for Life Science data stewardship and open and available to all UK university and research institute-based biomedical researchers and their research support staff, at all career stages. Virtual training modules (DM-Bites) will cover general topics applicable across communities and career stages and specialist topics by data type, community and infrastructure. Materials will be developed and DM-Bites delivered by dedicated trainers and a fellowship of Life Science Data Stewards steered by an "Expert Pool" of ELIXIR-UK members who will identify, create and review training content. The fellowship will seed a training network to migrate research data management best practices into UK universities and research institutions, mentored by the Pool and supported to lead training in their host institutions.

Description | FAIRsharing Community Champions Programme |
Organisation | Research Data Alliance (RDA) |
Country | Global |
Sector | Charity/Non Profit |
PI Contribution | Under the auspices of RDA Europe and EOSC Future, FAIRsharing has now officially launched our new Community Curation Programme: https://fairsharing.org/community_champions. This Programme creates a collaborative environment where domain experts are selected to oversee certain areas within the FAIRsharing registry in return for a number of professional benefits. The domain and discipline experts of the FAIRsharing Community Champions Programme: 1 . act as advocates to promote the value of standards, databases and policies for digital objects (incl. data, software). 2 . create educational material escribing these resources helping researchers and other stakeholders to find, use and adopt them. 3 . enrich the content of FAIRsharing, adding and enhancing the description and discoverability of these resources. The FAIRsharing Community Champions put their expertise into action in one of more disciplines or area of activities, according to their interest, and are credited for their contribution via visible attribution in their ORCID and FAIRsharing profiles. Their contribution to and engagement with the FAIRsharing team gives them more knowledge about the wealth of standards (terminologies, models/formats, guidelines, identifier schema), databases (repositories and knowledge bases) and policies (by institutions, funders, journals and other stakeholders) relevant to them. |
Collaborator Contribution | RDA and EOSC-Future have provide some seed funds and an umbrella to advertise it and engage with the community at large. |
Impact | The first 18 Community Champtions, across all disciplines, are in place: https://fairsharing.org/community_champions/our_champions and have contributed to the creation of Educational material https://fairsharing.org/educational |

Title | TeSS UX update |
Description | TeSS (Training eSupport system) is a platform that was developed to provide a one-stop shop for trainers and trainees to discover online information and content, including training materials, events and interactive tutorials. For training providers, TeSS provides opportunities to promote training events and news, and to contribute to a growing catalogue of materials; for trainers, the portal offers an environment for sharing materials and event information; for trainees, it offers a convenient gateway via which to identify relevant training events and resources, and to perform specific, guided analysis tasks via customised training workflows. |
Type Of Technology | Webtool/Application |
Year Produced | 2023 |
Open Source License? | Yes |
Impact | The Community Manager of the project, Xenia Perez Sitja, worked together with the software development team of TeSS with a unique proposal for the web app using the information from previous UX audits that had never been implemented. The new redesign also included enhanced capabilities to register training materials and gave the curated collections a revamped and prime location. These collections will be the first curated section of TeSS, offering benefits to users looking for high-quality training from A-Z in a particular topic, including training developed within the Fellowship. |

Results and Impact | ELIXIR-UK Members Carole Goble (Manchester), Susanna-Assunta Sansone (Oxford) and Marco Brandizi (Rothamsted) orgnaised a mini symposium on Reserach Data Management: The advancement of science and technology in modern scientific research has called for a comprehensive research data management that can handle complex data and knowledge. Various activities at ELIXIR extend into the different components of Research Data Management (RDM). Data interoperability of complex bioinformatics knowledge requires supporting tools and compute infrastructures, along with capacity building in order to achieve the ideal efficiency for global data operations. This mini-symposium aims to highlight success stories and best practices in development of activities and implementations across ELIXIR in the scope of management of complex data that drives knowledge transfer and discovery. This session emphasises on the ecosystem of knowledge transfer and discoverability by all technical aspects: Data, Interoperability, Tools, Compute, and Training, for all ELIXIR Community use cases. Additional aspects of RDM include research reproducibility and long-term knowledge validation and preservation. This session is open to all ELIXIR members with no restrictions to any specific projects. |
