Abstract
Our mission is to build capacity for public health research, strengthen the evidence for public health policy and practice and to improve the health of the population. Our aims are to ensure that our research is excellent while extending its reach and impact. Therefore our strategy and objectives are:
(1) to expand and develop our staff and equip them with the skills for public health research;
(2) to build on a platform of excellence in key areas {exploiting existing data; social causes of health and disease; and health behaviours}, extending our research infrastructure and strengthening themes that are important to our partners and funders;
(3) to ensure our partners are actively engaged in the research process;
(4) to work more closely with the other UKCRC Centres of Excellence to ensure that the initiative delivers its objectives for national and international leadership in the field;
(5) to incrementally increase our grant income to ensure longer term sustainability.
Our priority will be to use the unique opportunities that exist in Northern Ireland, with its distinctive approach to integrated health and social services and well connected civic and public sector structures, to research the social and biological causes of chronic disease and the main causes of inequalities in health experienced in the UK. We will leave a legacy for future public health research by:
(6) surveying and following up a large sample of school children in Northern Ireland to study the neighbourhood, school, family and individual influences on their behaviour, their health and achievements;
(7) by surveying and following up a large sample of older people to find out what influences their ability to work, when they retire, their independence, their health and their social and economic wellbeing;
(8) working out how best to undertake public health research by using linkages between data already collected by public bodies like the NHS and others; and
(9) by showing the benefits of designing and scientifically evaluating novel public health interventions in partnership those working directly with the public, across different public sectors, and with the public themselves.
In so doing we are creating opportunities for young researchers to practice the skills necessary for high quality public health research and for them to establish a body of credible work that will help them become independent researchers. We will also demonstrate the added value of bringing researchers from many different backgrounds together around a common purpose and provide a bridge between the academic and non-academic communities to ensure that new knowledge is translated into actions that can improve health.

Planned Impact
Promoting trans-disciplinarity and ensuring stakeholder engagement will help us to deliver high impact research, with multiple beneficiaries, including: citizens of GB and Ireland; carers and commissioners; policy makers across GB, Ireland and at EU Level; third sector advocates; health & social care practitioners; participants of our studies and their families.
The Public will benefit through increased knowledge of ongoing research. We aim to increase public engagement through events such as the ESRC Festival of Science, public lectures and our work with STEMNET. The importance of the media in informing public opinion cannot be understated, the Public Attitudes to Science Report 2011, commissioned by Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), found that only 43% of respondents said they felt informed about science. Thus, we will continue to work through the Royal Statistical Society to help deliver the Science Training for Journalists Programme. This type of engagement can occur throughout the research cycle, however, the public will also benefit, albeit at a later stage, from any research that is successfully translated into policy. Members of the public may also benefit from participation in research studies, receiving advice in areas such as staying active and maintaining physical and mental wellbeing. We will encourage participant representation on research panels and will work with the regional Health and Social Care Patient and Public Involvement Programme to ensure that research is relevant to the public and conducted in a responsive and appropriate manner.
Commissioners and Policy makers will find the research of value in assessing the health and social care needs of the local population and in planning health and social care services to meet current and emerging needs. Our plans to research the use of Evidence Aid resources can have impact on a global scale, while locally the establishment of record linkage infrastructure will facilitate the analysis of a variety of policy interventions. While the timelines for research and policy may not always be aligned, we will maintain our strong relationships with key decision makers to ensure that that have access to updates on new research and emerging results.
The Third Sector will benefit from a more effective knowledge exchange process that allows stakeholders to engage in and influence the research from its inception. For example, the Community Development and Health Network will play an important role in guiding the development of a community based intervention to build resilience and mental wellbeing. Opportunities will exist for Third Sector organisations to build capacity by improving research literacy and understanding of appropriate methodologies. They can also exploit the knowledge gained by our students as part of the NHS Evidence Student Champion Scheme (coordinated at Queen's by the Centre of Excellence) which trains students to disseminate information on the searching and use of evidence.
Health and Social Care Practitioners will benefit from knowledge gained through workshops delivered as part of the implementation of the Public Health Agency's Knowledge Management Strategy. We will promote the role of specific PHA staff as research champions. For example, Dr Lynsey Patterson's contribution to research on AAA screening will create an important bridge between research and practice and help to strengthen research capacity in the PHA. The NI Public Health Research Network will also provide a forum for practitioners to engage in multi-sectoral research collaboration.

It consisted of fifteen pieces of art produced by prisoners in HMP Maghaberry who attended the Donard Day Centre (a mental health facility). The artwork explores issues of mental health and how prison impacts on the well-being of prisoners and their families. | Description | Five Northern Irish credit unions located in Greater Belfast and Newry, Co. Down participated in our study. They identified 1,091 members with either loans in arrears for greater than 9 weeks or loans that had been rescheduled. Only one participant per household was interviewed. The survey was carried out from January to April 2014 by a local market research company until the sampling frame was exhausted resulting in 499 completed surveys. The survey consisted of modules on household demographics, employment, income and benefits, debt, expenditure, savings and assets, financial literacy and financial characteristics as well as a number of health-related questions. The survey was carried out face-to-face and lasted approximately one hour. |

The aim of the lecture was to engage the audience in critical appraisal of epidemiological studies related to diet and breast cancer and to stimulate thinking in terms of causal relationships. The lecture was followed by a Q and A session which created lots of discussion through audience participation. It also was and opportunity for Dr Cantwell to highlight research on diet and cancer which is on going within the Centre of Excellence. Dr Cantwell received several enquiries from undergraduate students about the possibility of completing a PhD in the area of diet and cancer within the Centre of Excellence at Queen's University Belfast. Dr Cantwell has been invited to participate in future Alpro events which will increase awareness of the research carried out on the impact of diet and cancer risk and progression. |

Policy makers (Public Health Agency) became aware of survey work in ROI around the acceptability of different policies to tackle obesity (another aspect of Emily's work), which they were previously unaware of. |

The audience comprised members of the public and included a large number of families, the engagement resulted in valuable discussions around sugar and fat content of foods, portion sizes and the nutritional value of foods. The public were also very interested to learn about research into macular degeneration and to try glasses simulating the condition. Advice was given on risk factors for diabetes and management of the condition. 2015 - Researchers cycled on a multi-person pedal bike and orally presented a lay summary of their work. We also provided promotional materials for members of the public as above Members of the public learned about the centre and the research conducted. There was a change in attitudes in students and staff towards being more positive about public engagement |

The first half of the event showcased current school-based social research in both Queen's University and the University of Ulster. The second half of the event focused on eliciting the views of schools who have participated in research. Delegates were asked to complete a detailed feedback from for the event provided by the ESRC. Specific comments we received were: - I was very impressed and satisfied with the event as a whole - Excellent - Very useful event which will benefit my future research in schools. - Thank you - this was an enlightening experience and as a teacher it is beneficial to conducting research. | Results and Impact | Two workshops were held to build capacity in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The first was held in Belfast on the 5th and 6th of June and the second in Dublin on the 9th and 10th of June with around 30 participants at each event. The workshops brought together international speakers, researchers and practitioners from the island of Ireland in the field of tobacco control. The programmes comprised a blend of key note presentations, case studies and discussion on topics such as e-cigarettes, plain packaging and the development of an all-Ireland network for tobacco control. Dr Barrett was a member of the organising team, acted as a facilitator during the events and presented on the work of the NIPHRN and the potential for formation of an all-Ireland group. Participants showed support for an all Ireland tobacco control network to share knowledge and experience from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. A follow up event is being planned to launch the new network |

Sixteen of those were from Queen's University Belfast and the University of Ulster, seven came from the public section and two were in attendance from the third sector. breakdown. The audience had the opportunity to discuss the issues arising from the presentation and also had the opportunity to ask Grace questions. This seminar increased the awareness of the ethical consideration in conducting health-based research with young people. |

The seminar consisted of a 45 minute presentation with a 15 minute question and discussion session. Twenty-five people attended. One person attended from the third-sector the rest were from Queen's University and the University of Ulster. The seminar's main impact was information dissemination. A colleague approached me after the presentation and asked for my slides and said that 'I think that your study would be of interest to members of the public health research network and was wondering if it would be possible to add a link to your presentation in our next ezine and on the website'. |

| Results and Impact | The talk was entitled 'Mortality in patients diagnosed with diabetes during childhood in Northern Ireland, UK'. The role of illegal drug use in deaths of young people with diabetes (previously reported from a study based in Leeds) could not be confirmed in this Northern Ireland study and instead alcohol was reported to have made a significant contribution to deaths in the Northern Ireland cohort. Clinicians from many countries who care for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes were in attendance and this talk raised their awareness of the role played by excessive alcohol consumption in deaths among young diabetics. |

The purpose of the seminar was to discuss the benefits of physical activity for older people and the reasons why older people as a group don't have higher levels of physical activity. | Results and Impact | Dr John Hughes published the report 'CHD Mortality projections to 2020, comparing different policy scenarios' in February 2014 on European Heart Network website with subsequent dissemination of results at European conferences and seminars. The project included reviews on policy recommendations for future cardiovascular prevention strategies by representatives of government Departments, commissioning groups, Heart disease charities, general practitioners and leading Academics in nine EU countries. Final results were forwarded to senior policy makers in each of the participating countries (including Northern Ireland) to inform future heart disease prevention strategies. The study has enabled the production of a number of comparative papers (at an advanced stage and to be submitted to high ranking journals in the next few months) which provide interesting insight into how NI policies on cardiovascular disease prevention compare to policies in other countries (i.e at both a British Isles and at a wider EU level). |

| Results and Impact | This was an invited talk to the Public Health Agency's 'Patient and Public Involvement' representatives forum, to outline the Centre of Excellence approach to PPI and demonstrate using examples of ongoing or forthcoming projects. 7 of the 10 members were in attendance. The PPI reps gave very positive feedback on our approach to date and noted that the quality of our mechanisms for enagaging the public in research. They gave us some further advice on how we might improve engagement with members of the public via the some of the organisations they are involved with. Finally, some of the PPI reps present indicated a willingness to join study steering committees for upcoming trials. |
