Abstract
The improvement of maternal and child health is one of the aims of the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations Development Programme. Maternal mental health and obesity are global issues and risk factors for adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. This partnership will undertake the necessary background work and training to achieve the final goal of developing a protocol for a prospective mother child cohort study in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The aim of the cohort is to improve the understanding of the complex relationship between maternal nutrition, mental health in pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This objective will be achieved through workshops, web based communication and exchange visits. King's College London (KCL) has many links with Universities in Brazil, facilitated by the KCL Brazil Institute including a college wide co-operation agreement with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The proposed collaboration with the KCL Division of Women's Health and UFRJ Nutritional Epidemiology Observatory has developed from a mutual research interest in maternal nutritional status and women and children's health outcomes, with a particular focus on mental health during pregnancy and childhood cognitive development. This potential partnership relates both areas of expertise (maternal and child health and nutrition), and in this way, will contribute to reach the Millennium Development Goals and reduce the global burden of chronic diseases.
Technical Summary
The partnership will undertake the necessary background work and training to achieve the final goal of developing a protocol for a prospective mother child cohort study in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil through:
I. WORKSHOPS - W1. Review of the evidence and objectives of the new cohort study. (Setting: UFRJ). The objective is to develop protocols for systematic literature reviews (SLR) in women addressing the following topics: a) the relationship between nutritional biomarkers and mental health during pregnancy; b) the relationship of nutritional and mental health during pregnancy and childhood cognitive development (0-5 years). The evidence synthesised from these SLR will be used to define the scope and objectives of the new prospective cohort study in Rio de Janeiro. W2. Methodology part I. (Setting: KCL). The first goal is to agree the study design and subsequently discuss in depth the up to date methodologies that will be used to address the aims of the study above. W3. Methodology part II. (Setting: KCL). The aim is to decide upon the appropriate methodologies for the assessment of maternal and child nutritional status, maternal mental health, maternal and child physical activity, child development and biomarkers for evaluation. W4. Operationalizing the cohort study. (Setting: UFRJ). The last workshop will focus on practical and governance aspects of the study
II. WEB BASED SYMPOSIA - Four symposia will be hosted after the workshops.
III. RESEARCH TRAINING - Two research training courses will be hosted by KCL to gain expertise and improve capabilities in methodologies used in child and maternal health and nutrition.
IV. COURSE - A 3-day course will take place in Brazil focused on the developmental origins of disease.
V. DATABASE ANALYSIS AND SCIENTIFIC WRITING - The partners will work towards publication of two manuscripts on an existing cohort study.
VI. STUDENT EXCHANGE - Two students from the Brazilian team will be hosted by KCL.

| Exploitation Route | There is substantial interest in vitamin D deficiency at present, as it increasinlgly abundant worldwide. This study adds to the literature suggesting, but not confirming, that vitamin D deficiency contributes to post partum depression. This study would support the development of a new prospective large study to address the relationships between vitmain D status and mental health in the many women who suffer from depression after child birth. |
